The A5 road ( English for road A5 ) is a major road in England and Wales, which is largely designated as a primary route . It begins in London at Marble Arch, is designated A5 through Edgware Road until it meets the A41 road , and is then replaced by the M1 motorway , from which it separates at junction 11A at Houghton Regis . It bypasses Dunstable in the north and then turns onto its historic route, which continues south-east as A505 road and A5183 via St Albans to north-west London. To the northwest, the A5 follows the straight course of historic Watling Street to Little Brickhill, then bypasses Bletchley , the planned town of Milton Keynes and Stony Stratford on a four-lane route opened in 1980 and then turns back onto the historic route of Watling Street. Northwest of Towcester , the four-lane A43 road is crossed, which connects the M40 motorway with the M1 motorway. At the height of Weedon Bec the A5 approaches the M1 motorway again, to which it runs essentially parallel to Rugby , which is passed to the east. The road then changes its course from previously north-north-west to north-west, crosses the M69 motorway at junction 1, leaves Hinckley on the right and Nuneaton on the left and continues to Atherstone . Before Tamworth she crosses the M42 motorway . Then it follows a new, four-lane route, from Weeford parallel to the M6 Toll motorway , crosses the M6 motorway at junction 12 and continues west to Telford , a planned town named after Thomas Telford , the road construction engineer who earned the road to upgrade. There it joins the M54 motorway and, after its end, continues west to Shrewsbury , which is bypassed to the south. The A5 then turns north-northwest and crosses the border with Wales at Oswestry . The following section to Chirk (Welsh Y Waun) runs in a north-south direction; Then the road turns to the west, runs through Llangollen , Corwen , Cerrigydrudion and Pentrefoelas , reaches the Snowdonia National Park before Betws-y-Coed and crosses the Cambrian Mountains until the A55 road, which has been developed as an expressway, is crossed at Bangor . The A5 runs through Bangor, crosses Menai Street on the Menai Suspension Bridge and runs across Anglesey parallel to the A55 to Holyhead Ferry Terminal , where it ends.
