Nuneaton [ nʌˈniːtən ] is a town in the county of Nuneaton and Bedworth in the north of Warwickshire in central England . Nuneaton is the largest city in Warwickshire with 70,721 inhabitants (as of 2001). The city is about 12 km north of Coventry and 40 km east of Birmingham .

history

The name Nuneaton comes from the 12th century and derives from a Benedictine nunnery (English nunnery ) around which the place was formed. Before that, Nuneaton was a settlement called Etone. The first written mention of the modern name comes from the year 1247, in which "Nun Eton" is mentioned.

Nuneaton has grown since the 17th century because it is in the center of the Warwickshire coal mines. At the first national census in 1801, Nuneaton was already one of the largest cities in Warwickshire with around 5,000 inhabitants. During the industrial revolution of the 19th century, Nuneaton developed a large textile industry. In 1901 25,000 inhabitants were counted. During World War II , Nuneaton was badly damaged by bombing and large parts of the city center had to be rebuilt.

Nuneaton is close to the M6 and M69 motorways and off the A5 trunk road.

The place is a railway junction at the junction of the West Coast Main Line from London towards Liverpool / Manchester with the main line Birmingham - Leicester and a branch line to Coventry. In terms of passenger transport, Nuneaton station is served by the railway companies Central Trains and Virgin Trains .
