The M6 motorway ( English for, M6 ') is the longest highway of the United Kingdom .

The M6 is 232 miles (373 km) long and connects the M1 motorway at Rugby with Carlisle near the border with Scotland . The M6 is one of the busiest motorways in Great Britain, depending on how it is counted.

History and special features

The first section of the highway near Preston was opened by Prime Minister Harold Macmillan on December 5, 1958 . This part of the M6 is fighting for the title of the first motorway in Great Britain with the first section of the M1. The first part of the M6 was finished earlier, but very short and it was not built for a long time.

The two directions of travel are shared between Shap and Tebay and a road runs between the two lanes without there being any driveway at the point.

The last 6 mile (9.7 km) long section between Carlisle and the Scottish border (connection to the A74 (M) Motorway ) was opened on December 5, 2008 and thus the so-called " Cumberland Gap" was closed.

Planned expansions

The A556 (M) link is intended to link the M6 with the M56 to Manchester. The planning approval procedure for this street has been going on for many years.
