The M180 motorway ( English for 'Autobahn M180'), also called South Humberside Motorway , is a motorway in England and runs in a west-east direction from Thorne via Scunthorpe to Barnetby . Here the motorway turns into the A180 motorway and continues to Grimsby . The M180 is part of the European Route 22 starting in Holyhead , Wales . At Immingham it ends temporarily and continues at Amsterdam on mainland Europe.

At the western end of the motorway there is a connection to the M18 , which leads south-west to Doncaster and Sheffield . Following the motorway to the north you will reach Goole , as well as Leeds (west) and Hull (east). At the eastern end of the M180, the A15 branches off to the north and also leads over the Humber to Hull. The A180 road continues straight west to Grimsby.

Before the M180 was built, the A15 coming from the south followed the route of the former Roman road, Ermine Street . In order to relieve the neighboring towns, the A15 was then partially relocated a mile to the west and connected to the new motorway. The first section of the M180 running from here to Brigg was initially called A18 (M). After the Humber Bridge was opened four years later, a new junction of the A15 was built to the north, which leads over the Humber directly to Hull. Due to delays in the construction of the bridge over the Trent , the motorway could not be fully opened until October 1979.

Apart from a short section at Scunthorpe, the motorway has been expanded to six lanes. It is noteworthy that at its beginning the M180 is connected to the M18 by a roundabout , while the M181 branches off from it at a classic motorway triangle .
