The M6 Toll motorway ( English for, toll motorway M6 ') is the first motorway in Britain with toll and is located in the counties of Warwickshire , West Midlands and Staffordshire . The motorway was initially opened to local traffic on December 9, 2003 and a few days later generally. The M6 Toll bypasses Birmingham and Walsall to the east and north and is an alternative to the existing M6 on this route . It is intended to equalize traffic at Wolverhampton between the M54 and M5 . The M6, which in this area was designed for approx. 72,000 vehicles per day, had to cope with approx. 180,000 vehicles per day until the introduction of the alternative route.

The vehicles are automatically divided into different classes using sensors that measure height, width, length and number of axles. Payment can be made at machines that accept coins or credit cards, at a counter with service or in advance by subscription. The subscribers receive a small device that is placed behind the windshield, communicates with the electronics there at the payment station and opens the barrier (similar to the French Télépéage ). At the entrance to the various lanes, it is shown which payment options are available.
