The opened in 1996 M49 motorway ( English for highway M49 ) is an 8 km long motorway in England . It connects the southern section of the M5 motorway with the M4 motorway that crosses the Severn on the second Severn bridge . This shortens the route by around 6 miles compared to driving over the intersection of the M5 and M4.
The special feature of the motorway is that its number does not start with a 3, although it is located south of the M4. However, this corresponds to their location on the A4 road .
