The M23 motorway ( English for 'Autobahn M23') is an English motorway. It begins in the south of Hooley in Surrey , where it branches off the A23, and ends in Pease Pottage , south of Crawley , West Sussex , where it merges again with the A23, which is motorway-like to Brighton. A branch runs from Junction 9 to London Gatwick Airport .
The motorway was built between 1972 and 1975, at the same time as the southern section of the M25 Motorway between Godstone and Reigate . It was originally planned to lead the motorway further north into south London . The counting of the connection points still indicates these plans.
