Redhill is a town in the Borough of Reigate and Banstead in Surrey in southern England . The city has around 25,000 residents and is a southern suburb of London in the North Downs .

history

Redhill was built in 1818 as a settlement on a newly built road; Originally called Warwick Town, the settlement was renamed in 1856 after the post office was moved from Red Hill Common. The establishment of a train station on the London - Brighton line in 1844 accelerated the development of the place. In Redhill, the North Downs Line to Guildford and the line to Tonbridge branch off from it. In 1855 the Royal Earlswood Hospital was opened in Redhill, a psychiatric hospital in which u. a. Relatives of the royal family lived as patients. The hospital closed in 1997.

The city's employers include Boots, WH Smith, Iceland, Sainsbury's, PSA Bank (Peugeot + Citroën) headquarters for Great Britain and Northern Ireland, Currys, Barclays Bank, McDonald's and Lloyds TSB; the locations of the companies Woolworths, Our Price and Lidl have now been closed. Redhill also has a multi-storey shopping mall (The Belfry Shopping Center) and another shopping arcade (Redhill Indoor Market).

Culture and sport

Redhill has a theater, the “Harlequin”, but the city is popularly known as “Deadhill” because there is obviously not much to experience in this small town. Redhill is the hometown of Redhill FC football club.

Redhill has a rail link on the Brighton Main Line and is accessible from the A23 and A25 roads . The nearest motorways, the M23 and M25 , pass Redhill approximately 2 km north and east, respectively. There is a small airfield about 2 km southeast of the city.
