Walter Kingsford
Walter Kingsford (born September 20, 1881 in Redhill , England , † February 2, 1958 in Hollywood , California ) was a British actor.
life and career
Walter Kingsford first worked at the theater in London and later went to the United States. Because of his small size hardly a leading actor, he was able to distinguish himself as a supporting actor to stars like John Barrymore , Ethel Barrymore and Fay Bainter at the theater. Between 1912 and 1946, the character actor starred in nearly 40 plays on Broadway . Like many other theater actors, he did not come to film until the beginning of the sound film in the late 1920s. He made his first film Outward Bound in 1930, and from the mid-1930s onwards he played regularly in Hollywood productions. Seen in a total of 110 films and more than 30 television series, the busy Brit played particularly often high-ranking, but often not necessarily sympathetic, authority figures. Kingsford often played arch-conservative aristocrats, deceitful lawyers and strict officials or doctors, for example in all parts of the popular Dr. Kildare film series as snobbish hospital director Dr. Walter Carew.
Another Kingsford specialty was the embodiment of historical figures, for example he played Napoleon III. in two films. He also played the first US President George Washington , the Austrian State Chancellor Prince Metternich and Franz von Papen in the anti-Nazi flick The Hitler Gang . In 1950 his wife Alison died. In the years that followed, Kingsford made regular appearances on emerging television, including five episodes of Alfred Hitchcock Presents and six episodes of Science Fiction Theater . He died in Hollywood in 1958 at the age of 76 after working as an actor until his death.
