The M11 motorway ( English for 'Motorway M11') is a motorway in England, which runs roughly from the south to the north and connects the A406 (also known as the Northern Ring Road ) in the north-east London borough of South Woodford with the A14 in Cambridge .

The motorway was built in the 1970s, mainly for the quick connection of London to the newly built airport at Stansted. In 1975 the Harlow – Stansted section was opened, followed by the connection to London in the south in 1977. Further sections to the north were opened in 1979 (Stansted – Stump Cross) and 1980 (west bypass of Cambridge).

Originally, the motorway was supposed to begin in the interior of London in the Hackney district , which is still reflected in the junction numbering to this day. These plans were never implemented, but in the 1990s a motorway-like road (part of the A12 ) was built on roughly the same route and thus fulfills the function of the undeveloped section.
