Newmarket is a market town in the English county of Suffolk . It is located about 110 km (65 miles ) northeast of London and about 20 km east of Cambridge . With 20,384 inhabitants (2011 Census) it is the third largest city in the West Suffolk district .

Horse town

Horse racing in Newmarket can be dated back to 1174. Newmarket has two racecourses, the Rowley Mile , a 2,000-meter straight uphill straight that runs in spring and fall, and the July Course , which hosts races in summer. During the two world wars, all classic races were held here and not in their traditional locations. The British Triple Crown Race 2000 Guineas and the Mare Race 1000 Guineas , which is part of the Fillies Triple Crown, will be held on the Rowley Mile at the end of April or beginning of May .

In Newmarket, next to the seat of the British Jockey Club, which was founded in 1750, there is a museum for horse racing (see web links) and a breeding center for thoroughbreds opened by Queen Elizabeth II . The National Stud at Newmarket (near the July Course ) existed before the reign of Queen Elizabeth II.
