A12 road ( English for road A12 ) is a trunk road in England . It begins in London , runs north-east through the capital of the United Kingdom , crosses the M25 motorway ring at Junction 28 , and continues through Essex past Brentwood via Chelmsford , Witham and Colchester , after which Suffolk is reached Ipswich . Until there it also forms part of Europastraße 30 (this name does not appear on the signs). From Ipswich it continues, initially crossing the River Orwell with the A14 road , via Woodbridge , Saxmundham and Blythburgh to Lowestoft , the easternmost city in the kingdom.
The road has four lanes from London to Ipswich and has numbered exits. Chelmsford is bypassed on an eastern “bypass”, from which several access roads (Junction 26, 27 and via the A120 road to the A133 road ) lead to Clacton-on-Sea , Witham is also bypassed to the east, Colchester on a western “bypass”. Ipswich is bypassed in the south. The section from Ipswich via Woodbridge to Wickham Market is also largely four-lane. The continuation from Lowestoft to Norwich has not been part of the A12 since 2017.
Plans to build an M12 motorway were finally abandoned in 1994.
