Clacton-on-Sea

Clacton-on-Sea is a town in south-east England on east Essex . Within Essex, the Tendring peninsula forms its own district, the largest city and administrative seat of which is Clacton, which is located directly on the North Sea coast. Clacton-on-Sea was founded as a seaside resort in 1871 and attracts large numbers of visitors every summer.

history

The area has been inhabited since the earliest times. In 1911 Sir Samuel Hazzledine Warren found flint artifacts over 300,000 years old here. The flint tools, large-format flint cuts, were typical of southern England and northern France, areas that were not yet separated by the English Channel at that time . The corresponding Paleolithic cultural stage of the Mindel-Riss-Interglacial is called Clactonia after Clacton-on-Sea . During the Iron Age there was a large settlement in what is now Clacton. There are only a few finds from the Roman period. The current name of the city comes from the Anglo-Saxons , who named the place around 500 AD after Clacc, one of their leaders. In the Domesday Book of 1085 the place appears as Clachintuna .

Clacton has long been a small country community centered around St. John's Church. Clacton was at times considered a smuggler's nest, but probably wrongly. Agriculture was a defining factor, with the town initially having a windmill, and from 1867 also a steam-powered mill. The old parish lives on in the Great Clacton district to this day. South of this somewhat inland community, today's seaside resort Clacton-on-Sea was built in 1871 directly on the coast on the initiative of Peter Bruff . The city was initially rather difficult to reach by land and most of the guests came by ship. Clacton-on-Sea later received a rail connection to Colchester with the Sunshine Coast Line and in the 1920s the London Road was built, which also improved the connection to road traffic.

Population development

The city has had a remarkable population development since it was founded: While only 7,456 people lived here in 1901, there were 45,065 in 1991 and now (2006) there are over 53,000.
