Paul Banks (* 3. May 1978 in Clacton-on-Sea ), also known as Julian Plenti known, an Anglo-American rock - musician and composer . He is the lead singer , lyricist, composer and guitarist of the American post-punk band Interpol . He also realizes his own musical solo projects as Julian Plenti , Paul Banks and Hip-Hop - DJ Fancypants .

life and career

Paul Banks was born on May 3, 1978 in Clacton-on-Sea, Essex, England. In 1981 the family moved to Bloomfield Hills , Michigan . A few years later the family moved to Europe again. Paul Banks attended the American School in Madrid and has been speaking fluent Spanish since then. As Julian Plenti , he later dedicated the Madrid Song to this phase of his life . He finished school in Mexico City in 1993 . Here he took an active interest in music and bought his first guitar, a Gibson Les Paul . After his high school Accounts began at the New York University with the English language and literature -Studies and the study of comparative literature . During his studies he met the guitarist Daniel Kessler, who brought him to Interpol in 1997 . After graduating from college, he worked as a freelance journalist for various magazines, including Gotham Magazine, and worked in a café. In addition, he devoted himself intensively to music.

Inspired by the grunge music of Nirvana , he began with his own compositions. As a musical role models Banks gave Jane's Addiction and Frank Black of The Pixies on, of which he later in his solo project Julian Plenti also the song Into the White coverte .

When asked about his musical role models in a television interview, Banks replied:

"I would never try to sing like Frank Black or Kurt Cobain because you just can't do it."

The similarity of his melancholy baritone voice with the singing style of Ian Curtis of Joy Division , which is often noted by the specialist press, cannot understand Banks himself according to his own statements.

In contrast to the music that he composes himself, Banks has been interested in hip-hop since his youth and occasionally performed as a DJ fanatic . He also dedicates himself to this style of music in his musical solo projects.

Interpol

At the suggestion of Daniel Kessler, whom Banks met while studying in Paris, after some deliberation, he joined the New York band Interpol in 1997/98 as a lyricist and guitarist. His characteristic voice has a decisive influence on the sound of the band. Paul Banks recorded five study albums with Interpol. In addition to the lyrics, he also often worked on the artwork and the conceptions of the live performances and decisively shaped the understatement- based overall appearance of the band with an elegant dress code .

Solo projects

Since 1996, Paul Banks began to write his own songs under the pseudonym Julian Plenti , which he played sporadically between 1998 and 2003 in small bars and clubs in Manhattan such as Tobacco Road , The Knitting Factory , The Living Room and Pete's Candy Store . Paul Banks released his first musical solo project under the pseudonym Julian Plenti on August 4, 2009 with the album Julian Plenti ... is Skyscraper . Julian Plenti was Banks' pseudonym from before he became successful with Interpol. The solo album was released on Matador Records, the label of his band Interpol. It was recorded and mixed at Seaside Lounge and Tarquin Studios. Paul Banks produced the album he composed himself and also did the artwork for the record. Musically, the one of Glenn White and Alex Weiss (saxophone), Jessica Pavone (viola and violin), Yoed Nir (cello), Dmitry Ishenko (bass), Mike Stroud (guitar) as well as Charles Burst, Sam Fogarino and Striker Manley (drums) supported. A video for the song Games for Days was released in 2009, in which the singer of Metric , Emily Haines , played one of the leading roles.

During the musical upheaval at Interpol following the departure of longtime bassist Carlos Dengler, Banks released the solo EP Julian Plenti Lives ... in June 2012 . In addition to his own pieces, he used older songs composed by Frank Sinatra , Harold Faltermeyer and the late hip-hopper J Dilla and rearranged them. This EP was also released on Matador Records. It was recorded at the Electric Lady and Tarquin studios and mastered at Sterling Sound.

Shortly before the LP Banks was released on October 23, 2012, Paul Banks announced that he would be giving up his pseudonym Julian Plenti .

Equipment

At the beginning of his career, during the recording of the Interpol records Turn on the Bright Lights and Antics , Paul Banks mainly played guitars from the Gibson Les Paul Custom brand , which he later used to record some songs, such as Mammoth from the record Our Love to Admire used. Since then he has preferred to play Fender Jaguar and Gibson Flying V guitars . For single songs like Not Even Jail and for his solo project Julian Plenti he used a Gibson ES-135 . Currently he mainly uses a Fender Stratocaster or the tried and tested Gibson Les Paul Custom - especially on concert tours .

He also uses Fender guitar amplifiers , preferably Fender Pro Reverb .

Private life

Paul Banks has been in a relationship with the Danish model Helena Christensen since spring 2008 . Before that, he was long friends with the New York fashion photographer Abbey Drucker, who was also artistically involved in the artwork for the Interpol record Turn on the Bright Lights . In addition to music, Banks says surfing is his favorite hobby .
