J Dilla (actually James Dewitt Yancey , born February 7, 1974 in Detroit , Michigan , † February 10, 2006 in Los Angeles , California ) also called Jay Dee , was a hip-hop musician and producer .

Life

J Dilla started his career as Jay Dee, but started calling himself J Dilla in 2001.

James Yancey was formerly a member of the hip-hop group Slum Village , which he left after their first official album Fantastic Vol. 2 . He first appeared when he worked with The Pharcyde in the mid-1990s and made the debut of the hip-hop formation 1st Down. He then produced music for rap artists such as A Tribe Called Quest (with whose members Q-Tip and Ali Shaheed Muhammad he formed the production team The Ummah ), Busta Rhymes , Common , De La Soul and The Roots . Soul artists such as Erykah Badu , D'Angelo and Dwele also enjoyed his productions.

In 2001 his first solo album, Welcome 2 Detroit, appeared on the British independent label BBE as part of the "Beat Generation" series.

Ruff Draft was released as vinyl in 2003 on the German label Groove Attack. In 2007 it was re-released on Stones Throw. The abstract and experimental sounding tracks, in which he played with different styles, were produced by J Dilla himself (back then as Jay Dee) and recorded them within a week without mastering them .

In the same year he released the album Champion Sound with Madlib under the name Jaylib .

In early 2005, after a long hospital stay, the media repeatedly speculated about his health, as, according to the drummer Questlove, who was a close friend of him, he suffered from the incurable autoimmune disease lupus . J Dilla completed his European tour of the same year in a wheelchair .

In February 2006, just three days before his death, his last solo album, Donuts , was released, which he produced almost entirely in the hospital with a Boss SP-303 sampler and a portable record player. He had finished 75% of the album The Shining himself, with the permission of his mother Maureen 'Ma Dukes' Yancey by Karriem Riggins as Executive Producer. Star producers Kanye West and Pharrell Williams see J Dilla as their favorite producer .

James Yancey passed away in a Los Angeles hospital in the early morning of February 10, 2006 .

After his death

In 2006, his mother founded The J Dilla Foundation .

A year after his death, he was honored with the Plug Award for Artist of the Year and Record Producer of the Year .

In 2008 Pay Jay was released . The album was postponed in 2001 due to internal changes at the MCA label. Dilla didn't produce beats for rappers here, but got beats from his favorite producers Kanye West , Madlib , Hi-Tek , Supa Dave West, Nottz , Questlove , Karriem Riggins and Pete Rock , on which he rapped himself.

In the same year his younger brother Illa J's debut album was released on Delicious Vinyl Rec. Entitled "Yancey Boys". All beats are previously unreleased productions from J Dilla's early days. It is also the last album that consists entirely of Jay Dee productions.

J Dilla also produced Q-Tips song Move from his album The Renaissance .
