Flying Lotus (born October 7, 1983 in Los Angeles ; real name Steven Ellison ) is an American DJ and producer of experimental electronic music and hip-hop from Winnetka , California .

Life and career

Flying Lotus comes from a musical family: his grandmother, Marilyn McLeod, worked for the Motown label and wrote songs for Marvin Gaye and Diana Ross ; Alice Coltrane is his great-aunt; their son Oran Coltrane influenced his musical aesthetics. His music is influenced by hip-hop , electro and jazz . He first produced film music for the cartoon channel Adult Swim before 2006, the first own piece on the compilation Sound Of LA by Carlos Niño published. Then he signed the Plug Research label , on which his debut album 1983 appeared in the same year . The album was shaped by hip-hop and free jazz influences . In 2007 Flying Lotus switched to the English label Warp Records . A year later his second album Los Angeles was released there . At the same time, he produced beats and entire pieces for other musicians, including José James and Gonjasufi . For his part, producer The Gaslamp Killer edited songs by Flying Lotus and released the remixes as A Decade of Flying Lotus .

In May 2010, Flying Lotus' third album Cosmogramma was released , which includes guest contributions by his cousin Ravi Coltrane and the Radiohead singer Thom Yorke . In 2012, the fourth album Until the Quiet Comes was released , "a deeply relaxed album of the night, which makes wide spaces audible, deliberately sets gaps, interspersed with velvet rhodes organs , round fusion basses and worldly strings". On the 2014 album You're Dead! can be heard among others Herbie Hancock , Kendrick Lamar and Kamasi Washington . Bassist Thundercat has also played a major role on all Flying Lotus albums since Cosmogramma .

With Brainfeeder , Flying Lotus founded its own label in 2008. On the 2013 video game Grand Theft Auto V , Flying Lotus runs its own virtual radio station, whose playlist includes pieces by Aphex Twin , Tyler, the Creator and himself, as well as his rapping alter ego Captain Murphy.

Captain Murphy

Flying Lotus has also performed as a rapper under the name Captain Murphy since 2012 . In the summer of 2012, the song Between Friends with Earl Sweatshirt was released via Adult Swim . At the time it was not known who Captain Murphy was, as he rapped in a pitched voice and only appeared masked at concerts. In the following weeks, several music videos appeared on the Internet, but even these did not reveal the rapper's identity. On November 15, 2012, Captain Murphy released the short film Duality on YouTube , which is underlaid with his music and contains various film sequences from old Hollywood films, animations, porn films and video clips from the Heaven's Gate sect . The video as well as the music treat sects as a topic . On November 28, 2012, Captain Murphy released the music for the short film as Du∆lity as a free download . Feature guests are Earl Sweatshirt, Azizi Gibson, and Jeremiah Jae. Captain Murphy revealed his true identity as Flying Lotus at the end of his release concert at Club Low End Theory.

Allegedly he heard one of her lectures on the short earthly human existence from Alice Coltrane in the Californian ashram and misunderstood her: Coltrane said "Cosmic Drama", Flying Lotus heard "Cosmogramma", the grammar of the cosmos, and thus had not just a title but also found a concept idea for his album.
