Thom Yorke (born October 7, 1968 in Wellingborough , Northamptonshire , England ; actually Thomas Edward Yorke ) is a British singer and artist who is best known as the singer of the rock group Radiohead .

Life

Yorke's left eye has been paralyzed since he was born. Between the ages of one and six, he had to undergo five eye operations, the last one being faulty.

Yorke studied art, philosophy, and English at the University of Exeter . During his time as a student, he met his long-time girlfriend Rachel Owen († December 18, 2016), with whom he has two children. The couple split in 2015.

Yorke became known as the singer in 1986 (under the name "On a Friday") founded band Radiohead . In 2006 he released the solo album The Eraser and in 2013 - as part of the " Supergroup " Atoms for Peace - the album Amok . The title of the album Anima , which was released in 2019 after five years of work, stands for "soul". It is based on Yorke's preoccupation with Carl Gustav Jung and Matthew Walker ("Why We Sleep").

Yorke mentions REM as an important musical and lyrical influence in the early days. He also values ​​the poets EE Cummings , TS Eliot and Philip Larkin . Yorke can't read music.

He is a member of Make Poverty History , Make Trade Fair and The Big Ask .

Awards

In 2008, Rolling Stone listed Yorke as 66th of the 100 best singers of all time . In 2018 he received the Sound Track Star Award at the Venice Film Festival for his song A suspirium in Luca Guadagnino's film Suspiria .
