Adult Swim (own spelling in the logo [adult swim] ) is an American cable television channel of Turner Broadcasting System media group, which is a frequency with the transmitter Cartoon Network shares from the same group of companies. The station covers the time between 9:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. (USA). Mainly cartoons and puppet cartoons, which are aimed at adult audiences, are broadcast.

The station has existed in the USA since 2001. With the series Delocated , Adult Swim started its own real film production, the first season of which premiered in 2009.

In Germany, Adult Swim has been on the late-night program (Mon-Fri 10:10 pm) of the pay-TV channel TNT Comedy since 2016 . Before that, the program window ran on TNT Serie . All program content is broadcast in Germany in two channels in German and English. Adult Swim only broadcast new episodes of Robot Chicken from 2011 to February 1, 2016 and brought Rick and Morty to German television. All other programs were not synchronized in German. Adult Swim's official YouTube and Facebook pages were inactive until December 2015.

The most successful adult swim show is the Emmy- winning animation series Robot Chicken .

Surname

The name of the comedy format goes back to the adult swim times in American swimming pools. Originally, the dividers between the individual shows made a reference to this term: They showed scenes from everyday situations in the swimming pool, in which seniors could be seen swimming, showering, eating or doing aqua fitness . These bizarre excerpts were accompanied by a lifeguard whose voice boomed through the swimming pool megaphone. In 2003 these dividers disappeared. They were replaced with elements that were tailored to the characters of the shows. Therefore, the connection to the origin of the name Adult Swim is no longer obvious today.

History in Germany

The start on Arte (2001-2002)

The first German adult swim content ran on Arte in 2001 , including the show “ Der kleine Meisterregisseur(also known under the original title: Home Movies) , although the first five episodes were produced by UPN, which is why it was only the sixth episode the series can be called an adult swim production. The sixth episode premiered in the USA on September 2, 2001 with the start of the adult swim block, whereas in Germany it was released on June 17, 2001. According to an alleged animator who is said to have worked on the show, broadcasting rights were sold abroad before the US premiere, for example, which corresponds to the early German premiere. The show itself has not been broadcast on German television since 2002 and has only a synchronized season that cannot be found anywhere on the Internet or anywhere else.

The "Sat.1 Comedy" era (2007–2008)

On June 1, 2006, Sat.1 started a pay-TV channel called Sat.1 Comedy which, as the name suggests, specializes in repetitions and premieres of comedy programs. On December 5, 2007, five new adult swim programs called Aqua Teen Hunger Force , Robot Chicken, Moral Orel , Stroker & Hoop and The Brak Show were broadcast on this station at around 8:15 pm . In July 2008 the series The Venture Bros. was added. Every program was shown in this regularity until the middle to the end of 2008, when it then disappeared completely from the scene and was never seen again on Sat.1 Comedy.

Very few episodes were dubbed from 8 episodes on The Venture Bros to a maximum of 18 episodes on Robot Chicken . Stroker and Hoop is just the only one of the shows that got all episodes synchronized, but this show only has one season.

Sat.1 Comedy was discontinued on May 3, 2012, and its content was replaced by ProSieben Fun, which started on the same day .

TNT era (2009+)

TNT series era from 2009-2016

On January 28, 2009, the TNT series broadcaster was founded by Turner Broadcasting System Germany , which specializes in television series, reruns and German premieres. Soon after the channel started, on February 1st and 2nd, 2009, Robot Chicken , Stroker & Hoop and Moral Orel ran for the first time between 11:35 pm and 0:45 am (with repetition between 4:35 am and 5:45 am) , three programs that were still running on Sat.1 Comedy a few months ago. In April there was even a newly dubbed Robot Chicken . By the summer, the station finally showed these three programs regularly from Sunday to Monday, at the same time. In June, the three other programs The Venture Bros , Aqua Teen Hunger Force and The Brak Show were added one by one. From this point on, these programs run in a Tuesday-Wednesday-Sunday rhythm, relatively during the night, which can vary between 10 p.m. and 3 a.m. September 2009 came the first adult swim synchronization on behalf of TNT series, namely Lucy, The Daughter of the Devil , an 11-part computer-animated adult swim original, from which the entire program was also synchronized. In August 2010, the second Adult Swim Synchro came on behalf of TNT series, namely Metalocalypse which, however, was not dubbed more than the first season with 20 episodes. At that time there was also an adultswim.de website, which now only leads to the YouTube channel. Around 2010/2011, the broadcasting time for adult swim programs was extended to around 1 a.m. In 2012 another show called " NTSF: SD: SUV :: " was dubbed

At a few large intervals these programs ran regularly until the end of 2011, when Moral Orel or Aqua Teen, for example, had a long break that was about 3 years, and a few other programs were not broadcast for years. The Venture Bros. already had this break in 2010 and Robot Chicken only in 2012. The Brak Show was a bit harder because it disappeared in 2009 for 2 years until it reappeared briefly and then disappeared again. In 2013, apart from two episodes Lucy , there was Funkstille for Adult Swim in Germany for the entire year.

In the summer of 2014, the Adult Swim shows came back and everything went for the most part as before. At the same time that the show came back, the show Rick and Morty was put on German television, which is the most popular adult swim show ever. In 2016 there were a few new programs like Your Pretty Face Is Going To Hell or China, IL .

The old six programs left the same few episodes except for Robot Chicken.

TNT Comedy Era of 2016+

In 2016, the Turner channel, which was previously called TNT Glitz, was renamed TNT Comedy and the entire focus was limited from women's shows to comedy shows, so TNT series became more of a place for adventure or action, and the adult swim block was roughly here "postponed"

Everything plus the new programs stayed the same as it always was, in 2017 there were two new programs called " Harvey Birdman, Attorney At Law " & " Sealab 2021 " which were not advertised and only got 2 or 3 synchronized episodes. The Adult Swim Block became very simple over time and was limited to fewer programs than before. In October 2017, TNT Comedy took the show American Dad into its program and made the series part of the Adult Swim Block. However, it disappeared again in April 2018 and came back in October 2018, where from December onwards even German premieres of the 14th season were broadcast every Thursday. In May 2018, Futurama was added, which is an integral part to this day. The block now consists of Futurama , American Dad, Rick and Morty , Robot Chicken , Final Space & Ren and Stimpy
