Cartoon Network is a US television station owned by the Turner Broadcasting System . His program consists mainly of American and European animated series as well as Japanese anime . There are several cartoon network broadcasters outside the United States, with the oldest in the United Kingdom and Latin America.

history

The station first broadcast its program on October 1, 1992; initially obtained from The WB the rights to several television series such as Tom & Jerry Kids , Pinky and the Brain , Captain Planet and ThunderCats . The Hanna Barbera series ( Die Jetsons , Feuerstein family ) were also used from the archives . From 1996 the Cartoon Network Studios produced more and more in-house productions, so-called cartoon cartoons such as Dexter's Laboratory , Johnny Bravo , Cow and Chicken , I Am Weasel and Powerpuff Girls . The television station Boomerang , established in 2000, has specialized in the broadcasting of older series from the repertoire of Hanna Barbera, Warner Bros. and MGM. Some new spin-off series of older cartoons (for example Duck Dodgers or Taz-Mania ) are also shown on Boomerang.

In Germany, based in Munich , Cartoon Network can only be received as an encrypted pay-TV service via cable TV ( Unitymedia , Vodafone Kabel Deutschland , Kabel BW and KabelKiosk ), satellite and IPTV ( Arcor , HanseNet , Deutsche Telekom , Magine TV ). Since August 2007 the station has also been broadcast on satellite via the pay-TV provider arenaSat and since September 1, 2007 it has also been broadcast via the Sky-Welt-Extra-Package from the pay-TV provider Sky Deutschland . In Switzerland, the channel can be received via UPC Switzerland . In Austria, the channel can be received via UPC .

From the end of the 1990s, Cartoon Network included more and more animes in its program; today the station has the largest anime program of all American stations.

program

Miguzi

Miguzi started on April 19, 2004 and includes the Cartoon Network program between 4:00 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. This block shows series for a younger audience, currently the anime series Yu-Gi-Oh! GX and Pokémon as well as the cartoons Teen Titans and Ben 10 in the program. In addition, series such as Code Lyoko, Totally Spies and Winx Club (European productions) and Zatch Bell! ( Gash! ) And Rave Master (anime from Japan) alongside American cartoons such as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles . However, this block is not shown in Germany because Cartoon Network has a program there with repetitive series.

Toonami

The Toonami block is broadcast every Saturday from 5:30 p.m. to 11:00 p.m., especially anime series for a youth and adult program are shown. This program window first aired on March 17, 1997. Anime like Dragonball Z , Sailor Moon , One Piece , Naruto and Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo are shown successfully . The entire program currently consists of animes. Like the Miguzi block, the Toonami block is not broadcast in Germany .

adult swim

In Adult Swim block Japanese and American series will be broadcast for an adult audience. There are programs like Robot Chicken , Futurama , Family Guy , Inu Yasha and Ghost in the Shell . In Germany, however, this channel is not broadcast on Cartoon Network, but on the subscription TV broadcaster TNT Comedy and was broadcast on free TV on DMAX in 2016–2017.

Cartoon Network outside of the US

On September 17, 1993, the station started its program in Great Britain, followed by Latin America and Australia in 1995.

Today there are also CN channels in Asia (e.g. India, Japan, Pakistan, Philippines, South Korea, Taiwan, Turkey), in Germany and other European countries (e.g. Bulgaria, France, Italy, Poland, Romania, Scandinavia, Spain, Hungary) . For the most part, these can only be received via pay TV platforms.

Cartoon Network UK & Ireland

In Germany, Cartoon Network UK was free to receive via the Astra satellite for a long time in the 1990s and was also fed into various cable networks. The station was then called Cartoon Network Europe . Cartoon Network UK & Ireland has been encrypted since October 1999 , on the one hand to counter problems with the British pay-TV provider BSkyB , and on the other hand to stop competing with the now numerous country-specific Cartoon Network stations.

Since then, Cartoon Network UK & Ireland can no longer be received in Germany and Austria. In Switzerland, the Cartoon Network France program is broadcast in two-channel sound (French / English) in a few cable networks .

Cartoon Network Germany

From September 3, 2005, a cartoon network program block was broadcast every Saturday in Germany, Austria and Switzerland on kabel eins . On December 5, 2006, Cartoon Network went on air as a special interest program in Germany . On December 19, 2013, the Cartoon Network program block was discontinued on kabel eins. An HD simulcast version of Cartoon Network has been broadcast on Kabel Deutschland's network since October 15, 2012 .
