content

Twelve year old Gumball is a blue cat who lives with family and friends in the small town of Elmore. His father Richard is a fat, pink rabbit and married to Nicole, a blue cat. While Richard looks after the house and the children, the head of the family, Nicole, takes care of the maintenance with her work in the rainbow factory. If Gumball has only pranks and chaos on his mind again, it's his clever four-year-old sister Anais, a pink bunny, who can usually avert a disaster. Gumball's best friend is Darwin, a ten-year-old goldfish who originally came to the family as a pet. Since he grew legs, he has been going to school with gumball and is treated like the third child in the family.

Gumball is an incorrigible optimist. He tries everything if it only somehow promises to make the world a better place, to help his fellow citizens and thus to bring him fame and honor. However, some of his ideas raise doubts about his intelligence. For example, in the episode Der Geist , he leaves his body to the eternally hungry Carrie, who then, with the help of Gumball's body, gets into self-destructive feeding orgies. The only thing Gumball seems to learn from his mistakes is how to make even bigger mistakes next time.

characters

  • Gumball Watterson stars in the series. He is the son of the Watterson family and is twelve years old. He looks like a blue tomcat. He's quite a social guy, and behind most of his idiotic ideas there is a desire to do something good for others (even if in most cases it goes completely wrong). If he sometimes gets angry about something or someone, it is usually rather played and always short-lived. He's secretly in love with Penny, the germinating peanut. Despite his ferocity, he generally tries to be honest, courteous, and warm-hearted. He respects his mother, but often makes fun of his father.
  • Darwin Watterson is ten years old and (before the first episode) was once a Gumball goldfish . One day Gumball's father flushed him down the toilet, thinking the fish was dead, even though it was just sleeping. Darwin's love for Gumball was so great that he got lungs and legs on the way back to see his best friend. The two have been inseparable friends ever since, and Darwin was adopted by the Wattersons as a full family member . Due to his sudden change from the underwater world to civilization , many things still seem unusual to him and he approaches them with a carefree naivete . Although he is often embarrassed by Gumball's ideas and then helplessly trying to talk his way out, he is very loyal to his blue cat friend and often tries to keep up with him with crazy ideas. He often helps Gumball out of tricky situations.
  • Anais Watterson is the four-year-old daughter who, like her father, portrays a pink rabbit, although, unlike him, she has a normal figure and above-average intelligence. Often referred to as a genius by the teachers, she is considered by her brother Gumball and his friend Darwin as the prototype of a nerd without any ideas of her own. Gumball finds it superfluous that she always gives him advice, but deep down he loves her anyway. Although Anais always has something to complain about about Gumball, she enjoys accompanying him on his adventures (even if it only serves to make herself important).
  • Nicole Watterson is the typically overworked mother of two of her own children (Gumball and Anais) and an adopted goldfish. Blue and with typical characteristics of a cat , it externally resembles its son Gumball. Her sense of responsibility for the whole family is evident not only in her self-sacrificing housework , but also in the fact that she drives around society in her small car when necessary. That it is overworked is also shown by the fact that it deliberately breaks objects to keep itself occupied. She can get excited pretty quickly, for example when Gumball and Darwin take their ideas too far, but even more so when she meets her husband Richard doing nothing in front of the television, which is why she regularly takes an anti-aggression course.
  • Richard Watterson is a rather obese, pink rabbit who spends most of his time dozing in front of the television. Every now and then he promises to finally look around for a job, but never does. His sense of responsibility is just enough to consent to the household chores assigned to him by his wife. He then uses his remaining intelligence to cunningly avoid all real efforts. He has an insatiable appetite (especially for sausages and sweets) and drools to himself during the digestive sleep that follows on the family sofa. Sometimes he tries to ingratiate himself with Gumball and Darwin by participating in their pranks. His favorite child in the family is adopted Darwin because of his naivete .
  • Frankie Watterson is a fat, gray rat. He is the father of Richard and therefore the grandfather of Gumball, Darwin and Anais. He left the family for several years as he was wanted by the police for multiple frauds. After his house was seized, he got in touch with his son again and got to know his grandchildren for the first time.
  • Tobias Wilson is a rainbow colored boy at Elmore High. Tobias is convinced that the girls adore him, but they find him rather annoying.
  • Alan Keane is a green balloon at Elmore High. Gumball doesn't particularly like him, even though or because Alan is always polite and calm, no matter what condition he is in. He is in a relationship with Carmen, a female cactus.
  • Leslie is a male flower at Elmore High. He's Penny's cousin.
  • Sarah G. Lato is a girl from Elmore High. Their appearance resembles an ice cream cone. She likes Gumball and Darwin. She is also an avid comic and manga fan. She also draws comics herself, in which mostly Gumball and Darwin play the main roles. Although their manic obsession often unsettles the two of them, they like to be friends with her.
  • Penny Fitzgerald is a classmate of Gumball's and his absolute dream woman, although he never had the courage to admit it to her at first. It was obvious from the start, however, that she felt the same way for him. At the beginning of the series, Penny was a peanut with antlers, but in the episode "The Shell" its outer shell breaks off and she is now a fairy-like being that can change its shape depending on the state of mind. Penny has an allergy to blueberries and is a member of the cheerleading team.
  • Carrie Krueger: Carrie is a ghost and classmate of Gumball and Darwin. She's a typical emo and mostly in a bad mood. Still, she is very good friends with Gumball and Darwin. In the episode "The Matchmaker" it turns out that she is in love with the latter and they become a couple.
  • Tina Rex is a gigantic Tyrannosaurus Rex . Tina lives with her even more violent father in a junkyard outside of town. Although Tina is female, she has a voice that sounds as deep and resounding as that of a dragon . Tina gets angry frequently, which is why she often leaves a trail of devastation behind her, referring to her outbursts as "fun" herself. Often enough she hurts the other students with her uncontrolled violence. In the episode "The Party" it emerges that Tina has a secret crush on Hector (the only creature that is so big that you can only ever see one of his feet).
  • Hector Jötunheim is a huge, fur-trimmed creature, whose body size means that mostly nothing more than his feet appear in front of the camera. In one episode, it turns out that he is a giant . Rumor has it that for lack of other suitable partners, Hektor tries to approach Tina, whom he has already asked to dance in the episode "Die Party". In the episode "The Night" it can also be seen that he also raves about Sarah, a talking ice cream cone. He's a good friend of Gumball and Darwin.
  • Laurence "Larry" Needlemeyer works in various businesses, such as a gas station, a hair salon and a burger shop. He often gets into arguments with the Wattersons. In the German dubbed version, his last name was initially Nadelmeyer .
  • Principal Nigel Brown is the principal of the school. He is in love with Miss Simian.
  • Lucy Simian is an older baboon lady who is Gumball's and Darwin's class teacher and who appears to have a sadistic personality disorder. She takes a great pleasure in giving the students unsolvable tasks and then giving them bad ratings. The fact that she starts the day in an irritable mood and that her unfriendliness increases even further during the course of the lesson is probably due to the fact that she has been working as a teacher for an estimated 300,000 years. She has a submissive devotion and passion for the principal, Brown, and the latter returns her feelings with a kind of polite passivity. Miss Simian hates gumball with all her heart and tries everything possible to thwart its activities.
  • Gaylord and Margret Robinson are the bad-tempered neighbors of the Wattersons. They hate their neighbors because they are both retired and in their free time, which mainly consists of housework and gardening, the Wattersons never find peace. In addition, there is practically a continuous marital dispute between the two. During the first season Gaylord Robinson was still called Godfrey in the German dubbing , since the second season he is called Gaylord, just like in the original version .
  • Rockwell "Rocky" Robinson is the son of the Robinsons. He works for the school as a bus driver and caretaker. He is good friends with Gumball and Darwin.
  • Bobert is a robot. Since he often has problems recognizing the feelings of others and developing them himself, he regularly receives support from Gumball and Darwin.

production

The English-American original was produced by Cartoon Network Development Studio Europe, in collaboration with Cartoon Network Studios and Dandelion Studios . At Cartoon Network, producer Ben Bocquelet initially only had the task of supporting the ideas of the various artists for different original film projects. However, when the board of CN decided in 2007 to give every draftsman a free hand to implement his figures and a number of figures were not pursued further, Bocquelet decided to bring together figures left over from drafts in a separate production. He found the support of Daniel Lennard, Vice President of Series Development, and became lead author and ultimately executive producer of Gumball . The music was composed by Ben Locket. Tony Hull and Richard Overall were responsible for the editing and the artistic directors were Ben Bocquelet and Antoine Perez.

Production began in 2007, whereupon on May 9, 2008 a pilot episode of just under a minute and a half called "Gumball" was released. In that episode, Gumball and Darwin test their self-made Rube Goldberg machine to break out of school, but they fail. This pilot episode differs greatly in character design from the main series that aired from 2011.

24 half-hour episodes were written, of which only 18 had been filmed by the end of 2011. By the end of 2011, 36 12-minute segments had been produced for the first season, two of which were broadcast as one episode of 25 minutes each. It first aired on Cartoon Network in May 2011 . Another five seasons followed with a total of 226 episodes. On September 6, 2016, Ben Bocquelet wrote on Twitter that the series would end with the sixth season. Optionally, it was proposed to continue production without Ben Bocquelet, but these plans were discarded. There were also ideas for a possible movie. In addition, director Mic Graves stated in 2018 that he was working on a script for a corresponding film together with Bocquelet, but it was not certain whether the film would go into production. On May 31, 2019 the last episode "The Inquisition" was released on video-on-demand . That episode ends with a cliffhanger ; Ben Bocquelet stated that a final cinema or television film directly related to the cliffhanger would be possible. In December 2019, an offshoot called Darwin's Yearbook was finally broadcast, which, however, is detached from the actual plot of the main series. It is unclear whether there will be a film or whether the series will continue.

The German version of the episodes was first broadcast on KiKA on February 1, 2014 . The German dubbed version was produced by the Berlin studio TV + Synchron Berlin . Traudl Doering was the production manager, while Karin Lehmann was responsible for the script and direction.
