FLCL ( Japanese フ リ ク リ , Furikuri ), with the English sub-title Fooly Cooly , is an OVA by Kazuya Tsurumaki , an employee of the Gainax animation studio , who also animated the series together with Production IG . The latter also produced two films released in 2018.

action

Elementary school student Naota , who is at the beginning of puberty at the age of twelve, lives in the Japanese suburb of Mabase . He is bored with the boring city and monotonous life.

One day he meets a young woman named Haruko who runs over him with her Vespa and - as an excuse, so to speak - hits him over the head with her Rickenbacker bass. After this accident, Naota's life changed rapidly. Robots and other things grow out of his head and Haruko moves into the house in which Naota lives with his lustful father and grandfather.

Haruko seems to be collecting information about the Medical Mechanica company , which has erected a bizarre building in front of the city that resembles a giant iron. She uses the portal she opened in Naota's head with the accident to find a being called Atomsk who is being held captive by Medical Mechanica.

The young Mamimi often seeks Naota's closeness. She was the girlfriend of his older brother, who went to the US some time ago as a baseball player. She ignores all the rules, smokes in public and sees Naota, who is often uncomfortable with her presence, a kind of substitute for his brother.

The characters seem quirky and slightly overstretched. You tend to have extraordinary outbursts of emotion and excessive actions. Mamimi is obsessed with the past, Haruko's mood changes very quickly. Naota is the least volatile character, but unwittingly always finds herself in the center of attention.

style

FLCL is considered an anime with strange and peculiar narrative structures and a mixture of unusual drawing styles. Because of the variety of elements taken from different genres, it is not possible to clearly assign FLCL to a single genre. Rather, science fiction scenes are replaced by fantasy or comedy content, dramatic elements alternate with coarse humor. Some scenes refer to other anime, e.g. B. Neon Genesis Evangelion (also by GAINAX) or Hamtaro referenced by taking up scenes or props. While hectic and actionism predominate, the story itself develops very slowly.

FLCL is also noticeable for its drawing style, which is a mixture of many previously used styles, including laying trick processes, scratchy drawing techniques from American series such as King of the Hill , but also typical manga drawing styles .
