Hellsing is a manga series by the Japanese artist Kōta Hirano from 1997, which was also implemented as an anime television series and original video animation . The theme of the series is the fight of the secret organization Hellsing against vampires and other undead .

action

The series takes place in a fictional world based on our times, in which the secret, royal Protestant Hellsing order of knights has been successfully fighting vampires and other undead on behalf of the British crown in Great Britain for centuries. But for some time now there have not only been natives , real vampires, but also freaks , artificially created with the help of an implanted computer chip. Worried about their rapid increase, the organization sends the vampire Alucard to help eliminate the freaks . Seras, a survivor of a massacre and made a vampire by Alucard, now serves as his adjutant .

But not only Hellsing, also the 13th Division of Iscariot , which came from the Vatican , was specialized in vampire hunting. As a bitter enemy of the British Protestant organization, she wants to put an end to it and Alucard in particular. Above all, however, Hellsing has to fear for the National Socialist group Millennium , under whose leadership “the major” goes to war with a vampirized military battalion of 1,000 vampires against England and whose real agenda remains in the dark until the end.

Characters

Lady Integra Wingates Hellsing
Integra Fairbrook Wingates Hellsing, referred to in the manga as her father Sir Hellsing , is the head of the Hellsing organization. She is the youngest and only female member of the so-called Roundtable, a council in which all secret and non-secret organizations of the British government coordinate their joint action, including in the fight against vampires. She inherited her post as head of the Knightly Order from her father Arthur Hellsing, who died when she was 13 years old.
Alucard (in English / Japanese Arucard)
Alucard ( Ananym for Dracula) is a real vampire with great power who works for the Hellsing organization. Twenty years ago, Lady Integra's father banished him to the dungeon of the Hellsing estate and affixed seals that he must first lift in order to use his power. He was freed from Integra after she took refuge in the basement from her uncle, who wanted to usurp the inheritance after Arthur Hellsing's death and kill the child. Alucard has served her ever since. Alucard is a very proud vampire who treats his opponents more or less sadistically.
Seras Victoria
Seras was originally a police officer and was fatally wounded while working against freaks by Alucard when one of the vampires used her as a protective shield. Alucard offered to turn her into a vampire to save her. Since then she has been working with Alucard for the Hellsing organization, but she is nowhere near his skills. In addition, she refuses to drink human blood for a long time, even though the organization has donated blood to her. As a vampire, Seras has tremendous physical strength and often uses heavy weapons.
Walter Cumm Doilish / Dolneaz / Dornez
Walter was once a soldier together with Alucard in World War II and had fought against the National Socialists and their leader, who is simply called "The Major". He then became the servant of the Hellsing family and Lady Integra's bodyguard. He always remains very calm, but can fight very effectively in an emergency. His preferred weapon are sharp thin wires attached to gloves. In addition, despite his age, he can move very quickly and even dodge gunfire. Because of these skills, Alucard gave him the nickname "Angel of Death".
(Paladin / Father) Alexander Anderson
He is a member of the Iscariot Organization (The 13th Congregation) of the Vatican . His main weapon are sword-like ceremonial bayonets . He has the ability to use pages of the Bible to fight, or to take the view of his opponents when he withdraws. He can also regenerate injuries very quickly and even survive headshots. As a Catholic vampire hunter, he primarily wants to destroy Alucard and the Hellsing organization.
Enrico Maxwell
As bishop and head of the fictional 13th congregation of the Vatican , Iscariot's division, Enrico Maxwell has made it his mission to destroy all undead, suppress all non-believers and condemn all heretics. He leads his department with an iron fist and detests Lady Hellsing and her Protestant organization. Maxwell was an orphan who was raised in the Catholic Ferdinand Luxheim orphanage near Rome by Anderson among others. He is sometimes referred to as Enrico Machiavelli . He dies in the war against Hellsing and Millenium when Anderson does not save him from the undead, but sacrifices him.
The major
The major is the leader of the "last battalion", which consists of vampires and other undead. His comrades often call him the "Deputy Leader". He has made it his mission to start a new war and destroy the Hellsing organization.
The captain
The captain, who doesn't say a word in the entire manga or in the OVA, is the major's personal adjutant and bodyguard and doesn't leave his side. You can tell from his uniform that he is a member of the Waffen SS, which is also indicated by the skull symbol on his field cap. Additionally, he's the only Millennial who can transform into a werewolf at will. In fan circles, the captain is often given the name Hans Günsch, although this is never spoken or mentioned in either the manga or the animated version. The name was taken from the work Desert Schutzstaffel by Hirano, in which there is a similar character. His real name is not yet known.
The captain uses two C96 Mausers with a greatly extended barrel. He also carries a combat knife with him, which he does not use.

Publications

Manga

The series was continuously published monthly in the Japanese Young King OURs magazine between 1997 and 2008 . From 2003 to 2009 the Manga was published in Germany by Panini Verlags GmbH under the Planet Manga brand. In order to publish the manga in Germany, the publisher replaced the swastikas in the Japanese version with four adjacent squares. All 10 volumes have been published in Japan and Germany. The 4th and 6th volumes have been indexed because of the depiction that has a brutal effect on minors and incites violence ; they may no longer be advertised and not sold to young people under the age of 18. The manga is published in the USA by Dark Horse Comics , in France by Editions Tonkam , in Spain by Norma Editorial , in Poland by JP Fantasia and in Taiwan by Tong Li .

The manga was completed in Japan on September 30, 2008 with 95 chapters and published in ten volumes. In addition, the mangaka is drawing on a prequel entitled Hellsing: The Dawn , of which six chapters have also been published in Young King OURs so far.

Crossfire

Crossfire is a three-part series that focuses on the 13th Congregation of the Vatican, Iscariot. This series appears in the first three mangas of Hellsing as a bonus chapter and has nothing to do with the story of Hellsing, apart from the fact that Enrico Maxwell, Heinkel Wolfe and Yumiko appear in Crossfire as well as in Hellsing. In Crossfire, three missions by Heinkel and Yumiko are told.

Anime

The 13-part anime series was produced by Studio Gonzo in 2001 . The plot only follows the first two volumes of the manga, after that the plot of the anime is very different. It was first broadcast on Japanese television from October 10, 2001 to January 16, 2002.

In Germany the series was released on 4 DVDs by OVA Films . In the German television that airs Hellsing took place from 22 August 2003 to VIVA . From July 6, 2005 , VOX broadcast the series in blocks.

The first of the DVDs was a booklet in which the name of the series following the acronym describes: H he royal E nglish L egion of L egitimate S upernatural and I mmortal N ight G uards

From 2005 to 2012 the manga was implemented again, but this time as an original video animation under the title Hellsing Ultimate . Episodes 1–9 have an average running time of around 50 minutes, whereas the tenth and final OVA runs for just under 1 hour. Each episode deals with a complete manga volume and was released from February 10, 2006 to December 25, 2012 in Japan. OVA Films , the largest anime publisher in Germany, published the first four volumes on DVD from 2006 to 2008, but went bankrupt in 2009, which meant that the further publication of the remaining OVAs was uncertain for years. In 2015, the NipponArt studio secured the rights to the anime series and finally brought the remaining OVAs onto the market in Germany between July 10, 2015 and January 29, 2016.

From OVA 5 onwards the animation studio changed and Madhouse took over the staging instead of the satellite light .

Bonds

Hellsing's stories have many parallels to other fantasy or horror epics. The Hellsing organization to which the main characters belong bears a strong resemblance to the Wilmarth Foundation from HP Lovecraft's Cthulhu myth . The name "Hellsing" is derived from Bram Stoker's Dracula , in which one of the main characters is named Abraham van Helsing. In the course of the series, a connection is also established between the content of Stoker's work and the historical background of Alucard and the Hellsings. “Alucard” is Dracula's ananym . In addition, Seras Victoria's weapon is called the "Harkonnen cannon" in the series. "Harkonnen" was originally the name of a noble family from the science fiction - novel Dune (dt. Dune ) by Frank Herbert . The name of mercenaries "Wild Geese" who is hired after the attack of the Valentine brothers to the estate of the Hellsing as a replacement for the fallen guards, relates with some probability to the same group from the film The Wild Geese (dt. The Wild geese come ) from 1978. As the major himself explains in the last volume, the name of Schrödinger, portrayed as a Hitler Youth with cat ears , refers to Schrödinger's cat , a thought experiment on quantum mechanics by physicist Erwin Schrödinger from 1935. Hirano, however, endowed the figure with an ability which has nothing to do with this thought experiment and also only superficially takes up other aspects of quantum physics , such as quantum suicide and Heisenberg's uncertainty principle . Rip Van Winkle uses a musket with free balls , this refers to the opera Der Freischütz ; she also identifies Alucard with the devil , whom she calls Samiel .
