Naruto ( Japanese NARUTO - ナ ル ト - ) is a globally successful manga series by the Japanese mangaka Masashi Kishimoto , which appeared from 1999 to 2014 and was also implemented as an anime series . The anthologies had sold more than 200 million copies worldwide by September 2014 , 130 million of them in Japan alone. The sequel Boruto: Naruto Next Generations , which was also adapted as an anime, has been released since 2016 .

The action takes place in a fictional world , which is mainly shown from the point of view of ninjas from the village of Konohagakure. The main character is the young ninja Naruto Uzumaki , whose path to become an adult and the chief ninja of his village (Hokage) is being followed.

content

Ninjas in Naruto wear headbands with the symbols of their villages on them. Here the symbol Konohagakures upside down.

world

The world in which the story of the young ninja Naruto takes place consists of many feudal states and is strongly Asian / Japanese. Technologically it is not particularly well developed. There are no cars or trains, and no modern weapons either. But rudimentary electronics (primitive televisions and computers) are known for this. Five major powers are politically decisive: the kingdom of fire, the kingdom of wind, the earth, the kingdom of lightning and the kingdom of water.

Some ninja families live in the so-called "hidden villages", which are of great military importance for the individual states because of the many warriors they harbor. The five largest of these villages are each led by a "kage" ( , shadow ). These are the Hokage ( 火影 , "fire shadow "), Kazekage ( 風影 , " slipstream "), Mizukage ( 水 影 , "water shadow" ), Raikage ( 雷 影 , "lightning shadow" ) and Tsuchikage ( 土 影 , "earth shadow") ). The Hokage is the leader of the village of Konohagakure ( 木 ノ 葉 隠 れ の 里 , "village under the leaves"). Each of the villages, with or without a kage, has a symbol that shows the origin of the respective ninjas and is usually worn on a headband.

The villages accept various orders from princes or private individuals, which are carried out by selected ninjas. The tasks are distributed according to the rank of the ninjas, so that ninjas with low qualifications get the easier tasks. The jobs are divided into five categories and range from simple domestic help (D rank) to assassinations (A rank or S rank). The villages finance themselves through the execution of the orders.

Hierarchy

There are different ranks among the ninjas. Children who do not yet go to the ninja academy are still contenders for the time being. By attending the academy, where basic knowledge is imparted, they become academy students. After completing an exam, they become Genin ( 下 忍 ). You will be entrusted to an instructor and carry out simple assignments.

To become a Chūnin ( 中 忍 ), the young ninjas must pass the Chūnin selection test. This takes place twice a year and requires certain requirements, such as eight successfully completed missions and a recommendation from the trainer. The test is also a competition between the villages and is intended to demonstrate their strengths. Chūnin are used as leaders of ninja groups, as instructors in the academy, or entrusted with administrative tasks.

Above them are the Jōnin ( 上 忍 ), who represent the elite of every village. They master many fighting techniques and are used to train genin .

In addition to these main ranks, there are other types of ninja: So the ANBU ( 暗 部 , short for: 暗殺 戦 術 特殊 部隊 , Ansatsu Senjutsu Tokushu Butai ), which represent a special unit and are directly subordinate to the Kage. They hunt down criminals among the ninjas, but also carry out military actions and assassinations. They wear white masks that resemble animal faces in order to remain undetected. Furthermore, there are, for example, Iryōnin ( Medizin 忍 , "medicine ninjas"), cooking ninjas or courier ninjas.

Outside the ninja ranks are the Nuke-Nin ( 抜 け 忍 , dt. "Renegade ninja"). They are criminals who are wanted. Akatsuki ( , "dawn") is a criminal organization that consists primarily of particularly powerful, renegade ninja. Akatsuki's trademark are her black coats embroidered with red clouds, rings with different symbols from Chinese astrology (e.g. tori = rooster, the ring of Deidara) and the crossed-out symbol of her former village on her headband.

The Oii ninja are exclusively hunting ninja who hunt the Nuke Ninja, kill them and destroy their bodies completely, so that no information about the village, Kekkei Genkai (blood legacy or hereditary skills) or Jutsus (techniques) to other ninjas and / or villages come. Because the body of a Shinobi stores all secrets even after death. Another reason to wipe out Nuke-Nins is that they could overflow to other, possibly even hostile, villages and threaten the security of the home village / empire.

techniques

In Naruto, the skills or techniques ( , jutsu ) of a ninja are divided into four main types, which are different for each ninja. Most of these techniques require a “ chakra ”. Every ninja has chakras of body and mind, which he can use for the techniques through concentration and practice. This chakra can appear in five different types, assigned to the elements (fire, water, earth, wind, lightning) and is indispensable for many techniques.

The ninjutsu ( 忍術 , "ninja technique") give the user special abilities through the use of his chakra, which he otherwise does not have. The concentration of the chakra happens through hand signals. In genjutsu ( 幻術 , " technique of deception") the chakra is used to evoke illusions. These can lead to psychological as well as physical damage to the opponent, as all five senses are influenced. Taijutsu ( 体 術 , "fighting techniques") are intended for close combat and are based on physical strength and control. Chakra is not necessarily required for this type of jutsu, but talented ninjas can let chakra flow into the appropriate body parts to increase effectiveness.

In addition to these three basic Jutsu variants, which almost every ninja masters more or less sophisticated, a fourth Jutsu type becomes known in the course of the series, the Sen-Jutsu, when a ninja uses its own chakra as well as its natural chakra Environment can concentrate. Mastering this is extremely difficult, which is why there are very few ninjas who can do this. After Jiraiya's death, Naruto is the last ninja in Konoha to master Sen-Jutsu.

Some ninja clans also have special abilities that do not occur outside of the family's bloodlines. These properties are called Kekkei Genkai . Examples of such properties are the Sharingan of the Uchiha clan, the Byakugan of the Hyūga or Kimimaro s ability to change his bone structure ( 屍骨 脈 , Shikotsumyaku ) or the ability to fuse several elements ( Seihitsu ) into a new one. These skills are extremely effective and powerful because no one else has mastered this technique and the surprise effect remains.

action

prehistory

12 years before the beginning of the manga, the ninja village of Konohagakure ( Konoha for short ) is attacked by the Kyūbi, an almost invincible nine-tailed fox monster . The fourth Hokage Minato Namikaze succeeds in sealing this demon in the body of his own son Naruto by sacrificing his own life and thus preventing the destruction of the village. After Minato's death, the previous Hokage Hiruzen Sarutobi took over the leadership of the village and forbade the surviving witnesses of the attack by law and under penalty of telling others about Naruto's burden, which, however, has the consequence that the adults of the village, either consciously or unconsciously, have an aversion to Naruto and avoid him. Naruto grows up in solitude and sets himself a goal in life to become a Hokage himself in order to be accepted by the villagers.

Start of Naruto's ninja career

At the ninja academy, Naruto is the worst student in the class. Outside the academy he does a lot of nonsense and is a nuisance for the village. The first hurdle, the completion of the ninja academy, he only takes with great difficulty. As a genin, he is assigned to a group of three together with Sakura Haruno and Sasuke Uchiha, which is trained by Jōnin Kakashi Hatake. Naruto is in love with Sakura, but she raves about the rather withdrawn Sasuke. This group, Team 7 , is initially entrusted with simple tasks in order to learn to work together and acquire new techniques. It comes to a more difficult mission in which Naruto, Sakura and Sasuke gain their first real combat experience against two outcast ninja.

The Chunin Trial and the Konoha Invasion

When a new Chūnin exam is due soon, Kakashi suggests his team for promotion. Kurenai Yūhi and Asuma Sarutobi also propose their teams. The three Konoha teams are considered too young by many, but still take the exam. Of the older Konoha ninjas, the Mighty Guy team takes part. Genin also arrive from the other villages for the test: From the village of the sand (砂 隠 れ, Sunagakure ) comes a team led by Baki consisting of Gaara, Temari and Kankuro. The first part of the exam is a theory test that all team members must pass to reach the second part. Then the teams have to travel through the forest of horror . There the first fights take place between the candidates and Naruto's group meets the renegade ninja Orochimaru for the first time. He wants revenge on his former homeland Konoha and its Hokage. He manages to curse Sasuke during the fight. The third part of the test is the grand finale: a fight in front of a large audience, including many princes. Here the young ninjas only stand up for themselves; the team phases are over. Since many teams have successfully passed the second part of the test, preliminary fights are held.

However, the finale is interrupted by an invasion by Orochimaru and ninjas from Sunagakure who have allied themselves against Konoha. Sasuke and Naruto fight with Gaara, who carries Shukaku, a monster comparable to Kyūbi. After a long struggle, Naruto finally succeeds in defeating Gaara and Orochimaru and his allies can be driven from the village. The village was badly devastated by the fight and the third Hokage died fighting Orochimaru. When it is discovered that Orochimaru murdered her Kazekage and took his place to attack Konoha, the Sunagakure ninjas end the fight. Orochimaru vows to destroy the village despite his defeat and plans to get Sasuke on his side. He wants to take over his body, because his previous body was covered with an incurable curse in the fight.

The search for Tsunade and Sasuke's escape

After the burial of the third Hokage, Jiraiya, a student of the late Hokage and one of the legendary San-Nin, is said to be looking for a successor to the Hokage's post. Jiraiya himself rejects this title and wants to win Tsunade for it. Besides Orochimaru and himself, she is the third of the San-Nin. On this search he is accompanied by Naruto, who is trained by Jiraiya on the journey. Tsunade is soon found, but is initially unwilling to become Hokage. Only after a fight between Orochimaru, who seeks Tsunade to heal his arms, and Jiraiya, Tsunade decides to accept the post of Hokage. Meanwhile, two men in black cloaks with red clouds appear in Konoha, the trademark of the Akatsuki. One of the two is Itachi Uchiha, Sasuke's brother. The Akatsuki want to kidnap Naruto because they are interested in the power of the Kyūbi in him. The two can defeat Kakashi and Guy, but fail with their plan because Naruto is not in the village.

Frustrated by his defeats and Naruto's progress, Sasuke decides to accept Orochimaru's offer and let him train him. So he fled Konoha with four of Orochimaru's followers. Naruto sets out with Chōji Akimichi, Shikamaru Nara, Neji Hyūga and Kiba Inuzuka to bring Sasuke back. However, Orochimaru's followers oppose the five. Only with the support of Rock Lee and the ninjas from Sunagakure , which is once again an ally of Konoha, can they be defeated. Naruto can put Sasuke in the valley of the end and a fight ensues, at the end of which Naruto loses and Sasuke escapes. Naruto then embarks on a two and a half year journey with Jiraiya, during which he continues to train in order to be able to cope with the Akatsuki and Sasuke organization.

Naruto's return and Gaara's rescue

Two and a half years after Sasuke's escape, Naruto returns to Konoha. There he finds out that he is the last of his friends to be Genin. Together with Sakura and Kakashi he forms the new team Kakashi . Meanwhile, two more Akatsuki members appear in Sunagakure: Sasori and Deidara. They kidnap Gaara, who is now the kazekage of the village, with Deidara losing an arm in a fight. The Village of Sands turns to Konoha for help, and Team Kakashi and Team Guy move out to free Gaara. Together with Chiyo, an old Suna- Kunoichi , one takes the trail of Gaara. Meanwhile, the remaining members of Akatsuki meet in a cave. All nine members perform a jutsu in which the shukaku is separated from Gaara's body. During the persecution, Chiyo learns that Naruto, like Gaara, is a so-called Jinchūriki, as he also carries a demon. There are a total of nine demons in the ninja world. The Shukaku is the Ichibi, the demon with a tail, while the nine-tailed Kyūbi has the most tails. All nine demons were repeatedly used militarily by the ninja villages by locking them up in people, the Jinchūriki.

Itachi and Kisame soon face Team Kakashi and Team Guy. The two are quickly defeated, but it was not really Itachi and Kisame, just servants of the Akatsuki who were given their appearance. When the teams reach the cave, it is already too late: The extraction of Shukaku has been successful and Gaara is already dead. In the ensuing fight, Chiyo and Sakura defeat Sasori, while Deidara loses his second arm, but manages to escape Naruto and Kakashi. After the fight, Chiyo uses a jutsu to bring Gaara back to life at the cost of her own life.

Fight Akatsuki and Sasuke reappeared

The dying Sasori informed Sakura that in a few days he wanted to meet a spy whom he had smuggled into Orochimaru. Tsunade decides to send the Kakashi team to the meeting point. Since Kakashi is stricken because of the fight, he is replaced by Yamato. Sai is the fourth member of the new Kakashi team. At the meeting point, the bridge between heaven and earth, they meet Kabuto, the spy sent by Sasori and closest confidante of Orochimaru. Shortly thereafter, Orochimaru appears and there is a fight between him and Naruto, with the Kyūbi in Naruto awakening and manifesting in a form in which Naruto is no longer master of his powers. Orochimaru escapes and is accompanied by Sai who has a message for him. Meanwhile, Naruto can be held back and saved by Yamato. The group takes up the chase and manages to break into Orochimaru's hiding place. After a short time, Naruto and Sasuke meet. However, Sasuke still refuses to return to Konoha with Naruto.

In the meantime, two more Akatsuki members - Hidan and Kakuzu - fight against and defeat the Jinchūriki of the village under the clouds. After extracting the demon, a two-tailed cat, they turn towards Konoha. They are placed by a team led by Asuma who is killed in the battle that follows. Meanwhile, Naruto has been training with Kakashi and Yamato and is leaving with a group under Shikamaru to avenge Asuma. Both Akatsuki members can be rendered harmless in combat. Meanwhile, Sasuke succeeds in killing Orochimaru before he can seize his body. He then forms the Hebi (蛇, snake ) group with three servants of Orochimaru . The aim of this group is to kill Itachi. At the same time, the rest of the Akatsuki members, Hebi and a team of Konoha ninja set out to fight each other. Deidara blows herself up in the fight against Sasuke, but Sasuke survives. Not far away, Naruto receives a book from Kabuto with Akatsuki's secret plans.

The alleged leader of the Akatsuki, Pain, appears for the first time in Amegakure. Together with his partner Konan he meets Tobi, who on this occasion reveals himself as a member of the Uchiha clan. Tobi orders Pain to find Naruto and kidnap him. Shortly afterwards, Jiraiya reaches Amegakure and a fight ensues between him and Pain, in which Jiraiya Pain recognizes Nagato as his former student. Jiraiya just manages to leave an encrypted message before he dies from the consequences of the fight with Pain. Elsewhere, Sasuke and Itachi meet. During the fight between the Uchiha brothers, Sasuke learns of Itachi's alleged plan to take over Sasuke's Sharingan eyes in order to become as powerful as the former clan leader Madara Uchiha. However, Uchiha dies from exhaustion at the end of the fight.

Sasuke's new target and Pain's attack

When Tobi learns of the outcome of the fight between the Uchiha brothers, he travels to the battlefield, takes control of the unconscious Sasuke and hides him. He explains to Sasuke the story of the Uchiha clan, who founded the village of Konoha 80 years ago with the previously hostile Senju clan. However, under the first Hokage, who was also the leader of the Senju clan, the Uchihas quickly lost influence. There was a fight between the first Hokage and Madara Uchiha, which Madara lost despite the help of the Kyūbis. Defeated, he withdrew and founded the Akatsuki organization. A few years ago, when there were efforts to rebel against Konoha within the Uchiha clan, Itachi sided with his family and allied with Tobi. The two managed to kill the entire Uchiha clan except for Sasuke, whom Itachi always wanted to protect. In response, Sasuke renames his team to Taka (鷹, falcon ) and sets a new goal: The complete destruction of Konoha. For this he joins Akatsuki. While he and his team are looking after the bearer of the eight-tailed biju, Pain sets off towards Konoha to find Naruto and secure the nine-tailed fox for the organization.

In the village, Shikamaru, Naruto, Kakashi and a team of cryptologists decipher the code Jiraiya left behind, but it does not provide any further information about Pain's being. Naruto begins a training in order to gain the same powers as Jiraiya and to be able to survive against pain. While he is gradually becoming familiar with the energies of nature, the Taka team encounters the Jinchūriki called Killerbee in the realm of lightning , in which the Bijū Hachibi, the eight-tailed ox, is sealed. The fight turns out to be difficult at first, as Killerbee, with his eight swords and the biju, seems to be clearly superior to his opponents. Only when Sasuke used a fighting technique inherited from Itachi and developed a new one, he succeeded in defeating Killerbee and Hachibi. However, Killerbee team can deceive Taka and escape.

Meanwhile, Pain invades Konoha and the fifth Hokage demands Naruto's return to the village. Kakashi is killed by him during Pain's search for Naruto. When Pain realizes that Naruto is not there, he uses a technique to destroy almost all of Konoha. On his return, Naruto confronts Pain and his doppelganger fighting technique. With his new strength he succeeds in defeating all but one of the doppelgangers. But then Naruto loses control of Kyūbi's power when his girlfriend Hinata is seriously injured by Pain. Eight of the nine tails emerge in the course of the further fight. Before the demon is completely free, he is stopped by Minato Namikaze, who is inside him and reveals himself to Naruto as his father. He tells him that Kyūbi was hounded on Konoha 16 years ago by Tobi, who posed as Madara Uchiha. When Naruto regains consciousness after this vision, he kills Pain and tracks down Nagato. He tells Naruto why he joined Akatsuki. Naruto manages to convince Nagato that his path is the wrong one. Nagato then performs a jutsu that revives anyone who died in the attack. After the jutsu takes effect, Nagato dies. An emergency meeting is called after the battle because Tsunade has fallen into a coma. Danzo is declared the sixth Hokage. With the news received from the Blitzreich that Sasuke tried to capture the Jinchūriki, Danzō now officially declares him the Nuke-Nin who is to be killed.

Meeting of the Kage and beginning of the fourth Shinobi World War

Following this fight, the Raikage (Rai, 雷, Blitz) convenes a meeting of the five Kage to work out a common strategy against Akatsuki. Sasuke appears at this meeting with the intention of killing Danzo. However, this plan is initially foiled by the other Kage. While Danzo is fleeing, Tobi appears, who declares the fourth Shinobi World War to the Kage, as they refuse to hand over the two remaining Jinchūriki to him. Meanwhile there is a fight between Killerbee and Kisame, which Killerbee can decide for himself with the help of his brother, the Raikage. Sasuke and Danzo meet some time later. During the fight, Danzo turns out to be a multiple Sharingan owner. Despite his diverse abilities, he succumbs and in his desperation takes Karin, a member of Sasuke's team, hostage. Sasuke cares little and he attacks both of them, whereby Danzo dies.

After the fight, Sakura shows up and tries to take Sasuke's life with a plan. He sees through them and only Naruto and Kakashi can prevent him from killing Sakura. The subsequent fight ends without a winner. Sasuke's new goal is to kill Naruto. While all the villages prepare for the impending war and Madara forms an alliance with Kabuto, Naruto receives a scroll to gain control of the Kyūbi. He signs it and is taken to an island with Killerbee to protect them from Akatsuki. There Naruto tries together with Killerbee to gain control of his Bijū, which he succeeds after a hard inner fight. With his new abilities, Naruto discovers that Kisame has been secretly following them all along, and that the Kisame killed back then was just a copy of Zetsu. It comes to a bitter fight between Guy and Kisame, which Kisame loses. During interrogation, Kisame kills himself so as not to reveal Madara's plan. In the meantime, Konan and Tobi are fighting over Nagatos Rinnegan in Amegakure. Tobi wins and appropriates the Rinnegan, whereupon he, Kabuto and Zetsu prepare to catch the Kyūbi.

Kabuto asks Madara to take care of Naruto and Killerbee. Together with the revived Deidara he locates the island, but is then attacked by the Tsuchikage. Since Deidara takes care of the Elder of the Kage, Kabuto can summon a giant snake. Naruto is given the tremors of the fight between his protectors and Akatsuki as an earthquake, so that he does not intervene. When Kabuto realizes that he will not be able to get to Naruto and Killerbee, he kidnaps Yamato and takes him to Madara. Kabuto revives the former Akatsukis, the Jinchūriki, the Kage and some elite Shinobi through a forbidden jutsu. With them and around 100,000 Zetsu clones, Madara goes to war.

The fourth shinobi world war

In order to oppose the Akatsuki and to protect the remaining Jinchūriki, the Shinobi Alliance (忍 連 合 軍, Shinobi Rengogun ) was founded by the five ninja empires . The leader of the alliance is the Raikage A, the general of the approximately 80,000 Shinobi army is the Kazekage Gaara. The army is divided into five divisions. Darui from Kumogakure is the leader of the first division, Kitsuchi from Iwagakure the second, Gaara the third, Kakashi the fourth and the samurai Mifune the fifth. Furthermore, a reconnaissance unit led by Kankuro, a medical unit led by Shizune and a tactical unit led by Shikamaru's father Shikaku were formed.

The war begins when Deidara and Sasori's squad of Kankuro, Sai, and Omoi are ambushed. Sai has to face his brother Shin. The revived have their old consciousness but no control over their bodies. They cannot be killed and regenerate. One has to seal the bodies in order to defeat them. When, after the first victories, the seven legendary sword ninjas from the fog also compete against the Shinobi Alliance, the fourth division also arrives under the leadership of Kakashi. Meanwhile, the first division met the white Zetsu army, Kakuzu and Asuma on the coast. The brothers Kinkaku and Ginkaku are also among them. They also have the Nine Tailed Fox chakra and four legendary ninja weapons. The brothers can be sealed in one of their own weapons after a hard fight. Shikamaru, Ino and Chōji have to fight their former teacher and can finally seal him up. Then Madara and the Gedo statue attack the coast. Its goal is the sealed fox chakra of Kinkaku and Ginkaku. After Madara gets its possession, it disappears again. The fifth division, which consists entirely of samurai, meets Hanzo the salamander. Except for the leader Mifune, the entire division is put out of action by Hanzo's poisonous mist. However, Mifune can defeat him in a short battle.

In the desert, Gaara's division has to deal with the second Tsuchikage, the second Mizukage, the fourth Kazekage and the third Raikage. Meanwhile, Naruto leaves the training room, but is stopped by Iruka and some ninjas, because Naruto should not interfere in the war and fall into the hands of the enemy. However, when he switches to the new Bijū mode and feels what is going on, Naruto sets off towards the battlefields along with some shadow doubles and Killerbee. After Naruto's doppelgangers have reached all the battlefields, the Alliance gains the upper hand and the former Kage can be defeated and sealed. However, the second Tsuchikage manages to split, which is why only half of it is sealed. Then Naruto and Killerbee meet Itachi and Nagato. When Itachi uses his Mangekyō Sharingan, a jutsu is automatically activated that he had used on Naruto himself during his lifetime and should actually be activated when Naruto meets Sasuke. This has the effect that Itachi is freed from the influence of Kabuto and can act at will. Together, Naruto, Killerbee, and Itachi can defeat Nagato.

On the battlefield of Gaara's division, the second Tsuchikage conducts another revival. To the great confusion of everyone, the real Madara Uchiha now appears, while the self-proclaimed Madara meets Naruto and Killerbee with the six revived Jinchūriki. The real Madara drops huge meteorites on the battlefield with a jutsu, wiping out almost the entire division. The six Jinchūriki have their Bijū ghosts back inside and put Naruto and Killerbee on. In combat, however, Naruto can talk to the four-tailed monkey Son Goku and secure his trust and that of the other bijūs. The Kyūbi in Naruto, who is actually called Kurama, accepts him and becomes his partner.

Away from the battlefields, Sasuke meets his brother Itachi, who is on his way to Kabuto's hiding place to end the resuscitation jutsu. When they both arrive there, they fight against Kabuto, at the end of which Itachi holds Kabuto prisoner in a genjutsu of the Uchiha clan. In this state, Itachi causes him to dissolve the resuscitation jutsu. At the same time, the five Kage fight against the real Madara, who is superior to them. Shortly before Madara wants to start the final attack, the jutsu that resuscitated him is lifted. In contrast to all other revived people, who are now all dissolving on the battlefields, Madara can save herself from this with a jutsu and continue to exist. All Kage are then defeated and seriously injured.

Fight against Obito Uchiha and the Jūbi

The self-proclaimed Madara now wants to implement his plan earlier than planned and seals all previously captured Biju spirits back in the Gedo statue. In addition, with the chakra from a tentacle of Killerbees eight-tails and the kyūbi chakra of Kinkaku and Ginkaku, he can now summon the ten-tailed Jūbi. It turns out that the self-proclaimed Madara is actually Obito Uchiha, who has teamed up with Madara. Obito was a former teammate of Kakashi, who had been believed dead since a mission. Shortly before his supposed death, he gave Kakashi his Sharingan eye as a gift. With the help of the Jūbi, Obito and Madara want to keep the world prisoner in a genjutsu called Tsukuyomi, in which everyone can live in their dream world and without war.

The conjured Jūbi seems overpowering. Madara has also arrived on the battlefield and the attacks by Naruto and Killerbee have no effect. After all divisions were able to defeat their opponents on the other battlefields, the Shinobi Alliance appears and, thanks to a strategy of Shukaku, can trap the Jūbi. However, the Jūbi transforms into its second form and can free itself. Meanwhile, Sasuke revives Orochimaru, with whose help he wants to find answers. Orochimaru has the opportunity to revive the four former Hokage, which are not under his control, but can act independently. Sasuke asks the third Hokage Hiruzen why Itachi wanted to protect Konoha with all his might. After Sasuke could understand Itachi's motives, he decides to follow his brother's ideals and set off with Orochimaru and the Hokagen on the way to the battlefield.

Kakashi and Obito transport themselves with their Sharingan to another dimension to fight there. When the Jūbi threatens to destroy the Alliance, the fourth Hokage Minato teleports them away. All former Hokage build a barrier around the Jūbi. Sasuke appears and allies himself again with Naruto and Sakura to the old Team 7. The Alliance and Team 7 fight the Jūbi, but can do little. When Obito returns seriously injured after the fight against Kakashi, he reunites with Jūbi and becomes his Jinchūriki. He begins to summon the Tsukuyomi, while Tsunade and the other Kage appear on the battlefield with Orochimaru and take up the fight against Madara. Naruto and Sasuke attack Obito together, can dissuade him from his plan and free the absorbed Bijūs.

Madara's Resurrection and the Infinite Tsukuyomi

After Obito's change of heart, Zetsu takes control of his body, finally resurrects Madara and conjures up the Gedo statue. Madara has all freed Biju spirits sealed again and also snatches the eight-tailed and nine-tailed ones. Naruto and Killerbee are dying and Madara becomes the jinchūriki of the Jūbi. Sasuke is fatally injured in an attack on Madara, but is rescued by the suddenly appearing and purified Kabuto who was able to free himself from Itachi's Izanami. Since Naruto only had half of the kyūbi and the other half is sealed in the fourth hokage, he gets this from Minato and Obito in addition to the chakra of the other bijū. Meanwhile, Naruto and Sasuke meet independently in a kind of dream world on Hagoromo Ōtsutsuki, the original founder of the ninja. This explains the history of the Jūbi and the Bijū and gives them its power. While Naruto is unconscious, Guy uses the jutsu Hachimon Tonko no Jin , which gives him tremendous powers, but costs his life after completing it. He is superior to Madara, but does not manage to defeat him until the jutsu subsides. Naruto, meanwhile awake again, protects Guy from the consequences of the Hachimon and fights together with Sasuke as a team against Madara. But they also fail to defeat Madara, whereupon Madara activates the Mugen Tsukuyomi and the whole world falls into a genjutsu. Sasuke can protect Naruto, Sakura, Kakashi and himself from this. Madara is then betrayed by Zetsu, who reveals himself to be the will of Kaguya , the mother of Hagoromo Ōtsutsuki.

The fight against Kaguya Ōtsutsuki

After Kaguya appears, she tries to destroy Team 7 by using a space-time ninjutsu that transports the fighting into another dimension. While Naruto and Sasuke fight her, they learn the story of Kaguya from Zetsu: she was sealed by her sons together with the Jūbi. Zetsu explains that he has since manipulated the ninja clans so that one day Kaguya could be revived. Shortly before Naruto and Sasuke can defeat Kaguya, she uses her space-time jutsu again, which irritates the two and gives her time to move Sasuke into another dimension and separate him from Naruto. Naruto continues to fight Kaguya and Obito and Sakura saves Sasuke with Obitos Kamui . This intervenes again in the fight. Obito is then hit by an attack by Kaguya, which cost him his life. Before that he leaves his second Sharingan to Kakashi, who creates a Susanoo and supports Naruto and Sasuke. After a short fight, they manage to seal Kaguya into a new moon. Then Team 7 and the Bijū are teleported back to their normal dimensions by the Rikudo Sennin and the four Hokage. Sasuke now wants to carry out his idea of securing the peace, which would result in the deaths of the five Kage and the Biju. Naruto, on the other hand, has a different idea - the two fight in the valley of the end. After the last collision, they are both unconscious until the next morning. After waking up, they talk about their findings, unable to move. Sasuke realizes that he has lost and, together with Naruto, dissolves the Tsukuyomi, whereupon everyone wakes up again.

In the epilogue, it is revealed that Hinata married Naruto. Together they have a son named Boruto and a daughter named Himawari. Kakashi, who lost his Sharingan after the war, is now the sixth generation Hokage. He gives his title to Naruto after about 5 years so that he can realize his dream of becoming Hokage. For her part, Sakura married Sasuke. However, he cannot see their daughter Sarada grow up as he is on long missions to atone for his sins.

At the beginning of the plot, Naruto is clumsy and clumsy, but when it comes to his friends, the fighting spirit and the power of the demon awaken in him. Later it turns out that Naruto manages to learn Jutsus that no one else or only very few have been able to learn so far. This is due to his strong willpower and his considerable amount of chakra, which he partially receives from Kyūbi. As it turns out in later sections of the plot, Naruto is the son of the fourth Hokage Minato Namikaze ( 波 風 ミ ナ ト , Namikaze Minato) and Kushina Uzumaki ( う ず ま き ク シ ナ , Uzumaki Kushina ), who both died while saving Konoha from the Kyūbi.
At the end of the manga he himself becomes, after Kakashi, Hokage of the seventh generation (Nanadaime Hokage, 七 代 目 火影, "shadow of fire of the seventh generation").
Sakura Haruno ( 春 野 サ ク ラ , Haruno Sakura )
A model ninja student who is in love with Sasuke. Her greatest strengths are her intelligence and perfect control over her chakra. She has two personalities: Her “inner voice” sometimes shows up when she is in difficult situations. Sasuke Uchiha ( う ち は サ ス ケ , Uchiha Sasuke )
He comes from one of the strongest ninja families in Konoha. His goal in life is to kill his brother Itachi, who with the help of Tobi has wiped out the entire family clan, except for Sasuke. He masters the Sharingan. (Kekkei Genkai)
Kakashi Hatake ( は た け カ カ シ , Hatake Kakashi )
He is the jonin and teacher of Naruto, Sakura and Sasuke. Kakashi is a master fighter and a former ANBU member. His left eye is covered by his headband most of the time. Underneath he hides a Sharingan eye, which he had transplanted in his youth by his best friend Obito from the Uchiha clan. Therefore he also has the ability to copy the techniques of his opponent and is therefore called "copy ninja". Kakashi's teacher was the fourth Hokage, and over time Kakashi discovered certain similarities between his old teacher and his student Naruto. He was shortlisted for the sixth Hokage, but could not prevail against Danzo. After Danzo's death, he is to be appointed the new Hokage, but Tsunade, the fifth Hokage, awoke from her coma in time to be able to take office again.

Minor characters

The San-Nin ( Three Ninja )

Jiraiya (自来 也 ), Tsunade (綱 手 ) and Orochimaru (大蛇 丸 ) are the "three legendary ninja" (伝 説 の 三 忍 , Densetsu no Sannin ), who have achieved a far-reaching degree of popularity due to their strength. They are from Konoha and were trained there by the third Hokage, but later went their separate ways.

Jiraiya is known for his lustfulness , as a writer he wrote erotic books, among other things, but also a book in which the main character is the namesake for Naruto . He was also predicted that he would train the ninja who would change the world of ninja.

Tsunade has a gambling addiction caused by the deep grief over the loss of her younger brother and fiancé that made her leave Konohagakure . Her skills are particularly in the art of healing and in her immense physical strength.

Orochimaru is devious, cunning, and armed with a wide range of terrifying techniques. In order to learn all Jutsu, he seeks eternal life. His experiments in this regard have established that his true form is that of a white snake (his familiar spirit). Orochimaru was a member of the Akatsuki organization , but left it again after he was successfully prevented by Itachi from taking over his body.

The San-Nin are designed after the characters of the same name from the story Jiraiya Goketsu Monogatari ( 児 雷 也 豪傑 物語 , "The tale of the gallant Jiraiya").

Another ninja from Konoha
  • Team Kurenai / Team 8
Kurenai Yūhi is the leader of this team and is responsible for training Hinata Hyūga , Kiba Inuzuka and Shino Aburame . Because of her ancestry, Hinata has the Byakugan , an improved eye with which she is ableto recognizethe chakra of others and to influence it with her hand-to-hand combat techniques. Kiba , who is always accompanied by his dog Akamaru , mainly uses techniques related to him and often relies on his keen sense of smell. Shino's body lives in symbiosis with a species of beetle that obeys him and that he can use for his own purposes.
  • Team Guy / Team 9
This team was founded a year before the other teams under Mighty Guy . He includes Neji Hyūga , Rock Lee and Tenten . Rock Lee emulates his role model Mighty Guy as best he can, but relies solely on his pure fighting power, as he has neither ninjutsu s nor genjutsu s. Neji, on the other hand, like Hinata , has the Byakugan . Tenten is a specialist in handling ranged weapons and is therefore in stark contrast to the three close combatants on the team .
  • Team Asuma / Team 10
Under the direction of Asuma Sarutobi , the son of the third Hokage , Shikamaru Nara , Chōji Akimichi and Ino Yamanaka are to be trained to become full-fledged ninja. Shikamaru , who is gifted with an IQ of over 200, specializes in techniques where he can control shadows and use them as a weapon, while Ino's specialty is controlling the minds of others. In this way she can gain total control over the body of an opponent, but at this point she is defenseless herself. The constantly eating and fat-looking Chōji has, like his father, the ability to greatly enlarge certain parts of the body, such as the fists. After Asuma dies in a fight, the unofficial team Ino Shika Cho is formed from the remaining team members.
  • Iruka Umino (う み の イ ル カ , Umino Iruka )
Iruka is a Chūnin and early in the series Naruto s class teacher at the Ninja Academy. The two often meet to jointly noodle soup ( ramen to eat), and Iruka back forever Naruto s pay destroyed vast amounts must. He is a father figure to Naruto . If you read his name as " Umi no iruka ", it means "sea dolphin". His parents died fighting the nine-tailed fox.
  • Sai and Yamato
As a substitute for Kakashi and Sasuke , Team 7 is temporarily filled with new members. As a replacement for Sasuke , Sai from the ANBU organization Root joins the team at the behest of the ANBU leader Danzo , where he turns Naruto and Sakura against himself with insulting statements . Yamato , who is also an ANBU member, serves as a replacement for Kakashi . Yamato is a product of Orochimaru 's experiments and can because of this, like the first Hokage Wood-element jutsu s apply. He is thereby able to suppress the power of the Jinchūriki .
  • Danzō Shimura ( 志 村 ダ ン ゾ ウ , Shimura Danzō )
Danzō Shimura is one of the three elders of Konoha and Sai's superior. He is bitter and known for relying more on logic than emotion. Danzō founded and led the ANBU group, known as "Ne" (根) or "Root" (in the German anime "ANBU core"). However, the ANBU-Ne group was disbanded and he lost his position. He fought a long time ago with Hiruzen Sarutobi for the position of the third Hokage. He also tried a few coup attempts, but all of them failed. He hates Tsunade because she is related to the first Hokage and carries on the teachings of the third Hokage. Later in the story, Danzo is named the sixth Hokage. During a fight he is killed by Sasuke.
opponent
Akatsuki

The Akatsuki organization (founder: Madara Uchiha) strives to rule the world. To do this, they try to capture and seal all nine demons so that their chakra can be used as a weapon. Akatsuki's leader , Pain , was previously called Nagato and was trained by Jiraiya . However, it turned out that the silent boy commands the most powerful of the three-eye jutsu , the Rinnegan . After training, he became Akatsuki leader Pain , and he managed to seize six different bodies in which he lived at the same time, as well as conquer the Rain Village. With the help of the nine- fold dragon illusion technique, Akatsuki is able to pull demons out of the bodies of the Jinchūriki .

Red clouds on black long coats are Akatsuki's mark

Most of the members are organized in teams of two , each made up of two very different people. The calm Itachi Uchiha is accompanied by the hot-headed Kisame Hoshigake , the religious Hidan is accompanied by the materialistic Kakuzu . In addition, there is a dispute between the members Sasori and Deidara about their fighting technique, which both refer to as art . The last members are Pain's partner Konan , Zetsu and the clumsy-looking Tobi , who, like Sasuke and Itachi, has a Sharingan and who is referred to as Madara Uchiha by Pain and Itachi .

Itachi Uchiha ( う ち は イ タ チ , Uchiha Itachi )

Itachi Uchiha is Sasuke's older brother and graduated from the ninja academy at the age of seven, was promoted to chunin at the age of ten and group leader of an ANBU team at the age of 13. With the exception of his little brother, he and the clan founder Madara Uchiha wiped out the entire Uchiha clan. Just like Sasuke and Tobi , he has the Sharingan, with which he can see through and copy an opponent's technique. He also masters the Mangekyō Sharingan , which over time costs the user's eyesight, which Itachi wants to prevent by trying to take over Sasuke's eyes.

Obito Uchiha

Obito, who also calls himself Tobi and Madara Uchiha, is the actual leader of Akatsuki. In the third Shinobi World War he is seriously injured and only through the real Madara Uchiha can he survive. He declares the fourth world war after his beloved Rin Nohara supposedly died of Kakashi.

The village of Otogakure

The village of Otogakure was taken by Orochimaru and its ninjas are involved in the invasion of Konoha . The headbands of this village all have a musical note.

The most important member is Kabuto Yakushi ( 薬 師 カ ブ ト , Yakushi Kabuto ). He is Orochimaru's closest confidante, was taken in as an orphan by him and mainly learned medical jutsus from him. For a long time he was used as a spy of various parties and served several parties ( Akatsuki , Konoha and Orochimaru ), so that his personality is difficult to see through, even for Orochimaru. After Orochimaru's death he takes a small piece of it in his face, which conquers more and more of his body.

Orochimaru's bodyguards, the four sonic ninja, assist Orochimaru in the fight against the third Hokage and help Sasuke to escape later. In Sasuke's escape, the young Kimimaro Kaguya ( か ぐ や 君 麻 呂 , Kaguya Kimimaro ), who is supposed to serve as Orochimaru's body, also plays an important role.

Sasuke's team Hebi also consists of the three former sonic ninja Karin , Jugo and Suigetsu Hozuki . Sasuke's three companions have the task of helping him find his brother and, if necessary, to prevent disturbing people from obstructing the search.

Origin, conception and style

Prior to Naruto , Masashi Kishimoto had only published one short story, Karakuri . Naruto was his first long series. A first chapter appeared as a one shot two years before the actual start, then the concept of the short story was reworked into a series. Before the start of the series, the first eight chapters were worked out to give Kishimoto a sufficient head start for the weekly publication. The plot arose while the series was being released, and the ending wasn't certain from the start. In 2013, Kishimoto didn't know exactly how the story ends. It was also important for the development of the plot that Naruto first appeared as a series in Weekly Shōnen Jump magazine. In manga magazines, the supervising editor has a great influence on the content and style of the stories, and the magazines try to find a balance of styles, topics and moods in the magazine in order to appeal to the broadest possible readership and avoid repetitions that are too frequent. The Shōnen Jump has a focus on science fiction and fantasy, accordingly, several thematically similar series appeared parallel to Naruto . The work began at a time in the late 1990s when many of the magazine's longer-running series were running out and new ones were being tried out. Among the new ones , One Piece , along with Naruto , became the magazine's core series for the next 15 years. In contrast to the cheerful pirate adventure, Naruto was designed more seriously and darkly from the start, but still offered some humor. During 2003 and 2004 in Shōnen Jump serious dark series like Yu-Gi-Oh! and Shaman King ended up being reborn by the fantasy comedies ! and Gin Tama were replaced, Naruto lost to humorous scenes. The plot focused on the betrayal of the pursuit of Sasuke and Naruto's growing up. This transformation to dark fantasy and replacement in the role of the dark series in the magazine was finally completed with the start of the second part Shippūden in 2005. However, according to Omote Tomoyuki in her analysis of this development, it is not clear whether the changes in the magazine led to changes in Naruto or vice versa, since the development of the magazine content is always gradual.

Naruto is set in a fictional world, a mix of feudal and modern Japan. The technical level corresponds roughly to that of our time, but Masashi Kishimoto deliberately avoided using firearms. The basic concept of the plot is the constant struggle for recognition of the disadvantaged protagonist and the achievement of a self-imposed goal, which is typical in the Shōnen manga . The successive and building-up battles and tournaments always offer opportunities to introduce new characters to the plot. The story can also be understood as a version of the classic hero's journey , as well as a misunderstood orphan's fight against prejudice and hostility. Important, recurring themes are also the characters' personality problems, due to their childhood, how these problems are overcome and how the young people grow up. But the temptation and abuse of young people with a traumatic past to commit crime is also discussed. With regard to the main character in particular, the work can therefore be classified as an educational novel. The importance of teamwork and friendship are also important elements and typical of Shōnen manga. A theme that is also consistently represented is the upbringing of the young ninjas by the older generation, respect for the elderly and the preservation of the existing order by being passed on to the new generation.

The genre-typical drawing style is characterized by a fine line. A super deformed style is often used in comical scenes . While the background is worked out in detail in the first ten chapters in order to bring the world, especially the village, closer to the reader, the background is usually kept very simple later on and is only rarely worked out in detail - to establish a new setting. This can also be attributed to the fact that the weekly publication cycle requires the rapid production of further chapters and the drawing of the backgrounds is time-consuming. Instead, the focus from then on was on character development and action. In the action scenes, a particularly large number of speed lines and sketchy, expressive drawings of the characters, sometimes without any background, are used. Kishimoto tried to transfer cinematic techniques he admired into the manga, especially fish-eye effects, dynamic tracking shots, switching between different close-ups and lighting effects.

Influences and allusions

Parts of Konohagakure village are inspired by Kishimoto's homeland in the countryside. Furthermore, there are many borrowings from the Japanese culture, such as ninjas and from Japanese sagas and classical stories. But other details such as the food or the home furnishings are at least influenced by Japanese. The term chakra comes from the Indian culture, but Japanese myths can also be found in Naruto : The kyūbi is clearly influenced by the Japanese saga of the kitsune . Here Naruto's mother Kushina Uzumaki plays an important role, because she was the Jinchuuriki of Kyūbi before him. The female fox spirit is based on the Japanese mythological figure of the kitsune . A fox with a maximum of 9 tails, which can transform itself into a beautiful female figure. Another allusion to the red fox is its red hair. The Shukaku is also an adaptation of the Japanese Tanuki . The eight-headed serpent Orochi with the sword Kusanagi was taken up with the character Orochimaru . But the names of various fighting techniques are also based on Japanese mythology. Thus, the techniques were Itachi Uchiha after the Kami of Shinto as Amaterasu , Susanoo and Tsukuyomi named.

The names of the individuals are often speaking names . They emphasize the characteristics of the respective person and often represent Japanese puns and cultural allusions. This is usually not immediately apparent to western readers and viewers, as borrowings from Japanese history and legends are also incorporated. Thus, Naruto 's name several meanings: " Uzumaki " in Japanese means "whirlpool". There are famous whirlpools in a strait near the Japanese city of Naruto . These are a common motif in Japanese literature and art, theater, and film. The Strudel / Naruto motif not only stands for the beautiful but dangerous landscape, but also for the stories about inner and outer dangerous circumstances and unrest, about beautiful children or women who are left behind by their parents or husbands because they stand for sacrifice their salvation. This theme is also an important element of the plot in the manga Naruto . At the same time, one of the side dishes of his favorite meal , ramen , a fish paste with a swirl pattern, bears the name Naruto roll . A swirl pattern is also included in the badge on the headband of the village ninja, which symbolizes the leaf of a tree. Sasuke 's last name " Uchiha " is in the old Japanese " Uchiwa pronounced" meaning "subjects" (which is a symbol in the family crest of Uchiha is -Klans). " Sasuke " pays homage to Sasuke Sarutobi , a well-known ninja character in Japanese children's books at the beginning of the 20th century.

Jiraiya , Tsunade and Orochimaru take their names and characteristics from the main characters of the Japanese novel Jiraiya Goketsu Monogatari (児 雷 也 豪傑 物語 , The Tale of the Gallant Jiraiya ), which was written in the first half of the 19th century: the robber chief Jiraiya , who turns into a could transform a giant toad, married Princess Tsunade , who was skilled in snail magic and could take the form of a large snail. One of Jiraiya 's followers called Yashagoro learned the snake magic and called himself then Orochimaru ( orochi means giant snake ). There was a fight between Jiraiya , Tsunade and Orochimaru , in the course of which Orochimaru poisoned the other two. However, they could from another henchman Jiraiya s be saved.

Modern series and films as well as western culture have also found their way into the series. The rocks of the village of Konoha with the heads of the Hokage are reminiscent of Mount Rushmore and films such as Battle Royale , Matrix and Akira as well as the works of the directors Quentin Tarantino and Michael Bay were models for Kishimoto in terms of themes and style. The barely older Neo Ranga was also particularly influential , from whom Kishimoto took over symbols such as that of the village of Konoha and whose filming also involved the Pierrot studio and some animators, who then also implemented Naruto as an anime.

Manga

The series began as One Shot , which appeared in Akamaru Jump magazine in August 1997 . The Shūeisha publishing house also published these individual chapters in 72 edited volumes. Since April 2015, the sequel Naruto - The Seventh Hokage and the Scarlet Spring ( NARUTO− ナ ル ト - 外 伝 ・ 七 代 目 火影 と 緋色 の 花 つ 月 , Naruto Gaiden: Nanadaime Hokage to Akairo no Hanatsuzuki ) has appeared in the same magazine , in which it is about the children of the protagonist goes. The manga was first published in German on September 27, 2016 under the Carlsen Manga label.

The beginning of the manga series was published in German from 2001 to December 2005 in the monthly manga magazine Banzai! from Carlsen Verlag . From 2002 to 2016, the series was first published in paperback, initially every three to four months, from the time the Banzai was discontinued ! -Magazine monthly or bi-monthly. All 72 paperbacks have already been published and have been republished as Naruto Massiv since October 2017 in a larger format and each with over 600 or 700 pages . In June 2008, the supplementary volume Naruto - Die Schriften des Hyō ( 秘 伝 ・ 兵 の 書 , Hiden: Hyō no Sho ) appeared in German, further supplementary volumes and art books followed.

Naruto is released in 23 countries including France, Italy, Spain, Norway, Sweden, Poland, Indonesia, and the United States. The American version has been edited slightly. Bare parts of the body or scenes that were perceived as suggestive were covered or changed.

Since May 9, 2016, a spin-off has been running in Shōnen Jump under the title Boruto: Naruto Next Generations (Japanese BORUTO - ボ ル ト - −NARUTO NEXT GENERATIONS− ), written by Ukyō Kodachi , who already worked on the film Boruto - Naruto The Movie contributed, and drawn by Mikio Ikemoto , who worked as an assistant under Kishimoto for a long time. The manga initially tells the movie Boruto - Naruto The Movie again and then continues the story. At the start of the new series, a one shot by Masashi Kishimoto, who is also the supervisor of the new series, appeared in the Shōnen Jump issue 22/23 of 2016 . The title has been published in German by Carlsen Manga since 2017.

Anime

production

The anime was created under the direction of Studio Pierrot, the digital coloring and the intermediate phase images also with the help of Changzhou New Star Art & Animation in China and Studio Cats and Nara Animation . Korean companies were also involved in the production. Production was directed by Hayato Date and the character design was created by Hirofumi Suzuki and Tetsuya Nishio . Shigenori Takada was the artistic director and the responsible producers were Ken Hagino , Noriko Kobayashi and Tomoko Gushima . The plot was implemented very true to the original, about two manga chapters correspond to one episode. In order not to catch up with the template, however, the fights were staged in greater detail and later produced to “stretch” the story. These contain storylines that do not appear in the manga series. This opportunity was also used to shed light on aspects of the topic, the world and the background of characters that could not be included in the manga due to the time pressure of the weekly publication. Episodes such as episode 17, about the tragic fate of the young ninjas Haku, expand and deepen the plot of the original and are among Kishimoto's favorite episodes.

As usual with long-running series, the production of individual episodes was led by different Directors of Animation, who alternate irregularly. Each of these teams consists of keyframe and intermediate phase artists. Since the teams and the animators maintain different styles and do not deliver the same quality, the quality and execution of the animations change during the course of an episode and especially between episodes. For particularly important scenes and episodes, teams and animators who have a lot of experience or bring in a style that is desired at this point were commissioned. However, this does not always meet with great approval from viewers. Episode 167 of Naruto Shippuden is very controversial because of the very different style of Atsushi Wakabayashi and his team from the rest of the series .

Similar to the manga, the style changes after the first introductory episodes and is more expressive and action-oriented. Animation Director Aisaka Naoki, who was responsible for the respective style-setting episodes, made the most important decisions for the first episodes as well as for the change afterwards. Some episodes, especially the first, have been adapted very closely to the original. Panels of the manga served as templates for key frames of the animation. The composition of the images and the staging deviate, however, in order to do justice to the differences in the media and the elimination of onomatopoeia, speech bubbles and the effect of color in the anime. Fisheye effects and sketchy representations were used less often, but close-ups were more common. Speedlines and other patterns in action scenes were often adopted, however, in individual shots a monochrome representation to emphasize action or special states of mind or the use of ninja techniques. In addition to the closely related shots, those that are not included in the template, but were dramaturgically necessary or add further aspects to the plot or mood, were inserted. Entire scenes have also been added to complement the plot or to draw more detailed characters.

During production, single-frame animation was initially used, which was colored on the computer until it was completely computer-assisted. In addition, the animation was tweened manually, which means that the intermediate images were created by hand drawing and not by computer calculations without special effects. Depending on the requirements, backgrounds from CGI models or computer-generated special effects were used. The anime has been broadcast in HD since episode 54 of the Naruto Shippuden series, which first aired in Japan in 2008 .

The anime series was broadcast weekly from October 3, 2002 to February 8, 2007 on the Japanese television station TV Tokyo . After 26 episodes, it was moved to prime time at around 7:30 p.m. due to the good ratings . The first series has 220 episodes. From February 15, 2007 to March 23, 2017 ran the direct sequel Naruto Shippuden ( ナ ル ト 疾風 伝 ) on Japanese television, which includes 500 episodes.

The television series has been licensed in more than 90 countries and broadcast in more than 60, including South Korea , Taiwan , Canada , United Kingdom , France , Italy , the Philippines, and the United States . The series was reworked for broadcast on American television in order to receive the PG rating of the youth approval. Violent or aggressive scenes were edited and synchronized in such a way that the consequences of violence such as blood, injuries or death and aggressive facial expressions or swear words no longer occurred. In August 2005, Panini Video announced the licensing of the Naruto television series for Germany and five other European countries. In addition, the company acquired the worldwide licenses for merchandising. The television rights for Germany were assigned to RTL II . The edited American version served as the basis for the European publications, since the aim was to reach as large an audience as possible, especially the younger ones, while avoiding possible conflicts with the protection of minors. This version was then shown on French, Italian, Spanish and English television. In the respective countries there were a few additional cuts, but there were no revisions in the image or dialogue.

The American version was edited again in terms of images and dialogues and additional cuts were made for German television. The decisions about this lay with RTL II, since the afternoon broadcast was intended to address the younger audience. RTL II justified the edits with the fact that the series would otherwise not have been shown in the afternoon program for reasons of youth protection. The broadcast slot was nevertheless chosen in order to reach the younger audience. The version should also be fun for older fans. The dialogues were created according to the US template and only adapted to the German language habits. All changes were made by Panini in consultation with RTL II. In the German synchronization of the anime, some names are usually emphasized very "German" and individual syllables are also pronounced incorrectly. For example, Sasuke is correctly pronounced [ sasʉ̆kɛ ] and not [ zazˈuːkə ].

The version of RTL II received negative criticism, which RTL II only reached with episode 273 of Naruto Shippuden in 2010. From there on, death was increasingly no longer denied in dialogue. Completely uncensored dialogues true to the original have only been around since episode 488, when the anime label KSM Anime took over the series.

The first 52 episodes of the television series were broadcast in German from September 18 to November 30, 2006 on RTL II. On March 6, 2007, RTL II began broadcasting episodes 53 to 104 for the first time, from August 24, 2007, episodes 105 to 158 and from September 22, 2008, episodes 159 to 220. On April 23, 2009, RTL II started the first broadcast of the follow-up series Naruto Shippuden, with episodes 221 to 272. It continued on March 29, 2010 with episodes 273 to 331 of Naruto Shippuden and from October 12, 2010, episodes 332 to 383 were broadcast. From June 1, 2010, Animax broadcast Naruto in an uncut version, but with the synchronization known from RTL II. From April 24 to October 8, 2011 RTL II broadcast episodes 384 to 435 of Naruto Shippuden. On July 1, 2012, RTL II continued the first broadcast with episode 436. With episode 485 and the termination of the anime program on RTL II, the broadcast of the series ended on April 21, 2013. The already dubbed episodes 486 and 487 of Naruto Shippuden were each available for one week on RTL II's new anime internet platform, which started on April 28, 2013, free of charge. From February 12 to April 26, 2016, ProSieben Maxx continued the first broadcast up to episode 539. Episodes 540 to 568 were first broadcast on ProSieben Maxx on October 10, 2016. On January 30, 2017, the first broadcast with episodes 569 to 591 continued. From November 10 to December 15, 2017, ProSieben Maxx showed episodes 592 to 643 for the first time. The remaining episodes, starting with episode 644, could be seen on ProSieben Maxx from November 19, 2018 to January 16, 2019.

The anime has been released on DVD on a regular basis since November 2006. These contain the edited German version and an unchanged Japanese version with German subtitles. Panini justified this with the fact that they wanted to address both young and fan audiences and offer a product that was as complete as possible. A second German soundtrack for the unedited version was initially not included, as the required storage space on the DVDs would have impaired the image quality. Since volume 13 and thus episode 53, the series has been published uncut and with full German dialogues. The uncut version of Naruto received an FSK-12 rating throughout, with the exception of two FSK-16 episodes.

synchronization

The German language version of Naruto and its follow-up series Naruto Shippuden was created by Studio Hamburg Synchron until 2013 . The series has been dubbed at DMT Studios in Hamburg since 2015. In addition to the studio change, some characters were also cast. Since Tobias Pippig no longer works as a voice actor, KSM Film called on the fans on Facebook to choose their favorites from the four voice actors presented. In the end, the role of the title hero went to Henning Nöhren. Lennardt Krüger, the spokesman for Iruka, retired from professional life because he suffered from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). As a result, his role also had to be refilled.

Games

Console games

There are a large number of Naruto console games for Game Boy Advance , Nintendo DS , Nintendo GameCube , Nintendo Wii , PlayStation 2 , PlayStation 3 , Xbox 360 and PlayStation Portable , among others . Most of these are fighting games or mixes of fighting and role-playing games. As a rule, reference is made to a point in time or situation of the plot of anime and manga and this is either replayed in a simplified form by the player or a side story is developed. Usually they are playable without knowledge of other parts of the franchise. Many games focus on Naruto Uzumaki. Often there is also the possibility to play other characters so that the player can gain a different perspective on the world of Naruto . However, the games do not offer any major additions or alternatives to this world, they are very closely based on the templates. Especially the Gekitō ninja taisen! Series for the GameCube, the Narutimate Hero games for PlayStation 2 and the "Ultimate Ninja Storm" series are popular in Japan.

So far, the titles Naruto: Ultimate Ninja on November 17, 2006 for PlayStation 2 and Naruto: Clash of the Ninja - European Version on November 24, 2006 for GameCube have been published in Germany. All titles are beat 'em ups and very similar thematically. On May 22, 2007, Naruto Uzumaki Chronicles came out in Germany for PlayStation 2 and on October 17, Naruto: Ultimate Ninja 2 was released for the same console . On September 4th, 2008 Atari released Naruto: Ultimate Ninja 3 in Germany. Furthermore, Naruto Uzumaki Chronicles (2007) and Naruto Uzumaki Chronicles 2 (2008) appeared in Germany. For Nintendo Wii, Nintendo released Naruto: Clash of Ninja Revolution - European Version on March 28, 2008 and the successor Naruto - Clash of Ninja Revolution 2 on February 13, 2009 . The games Naruto: Ninja Council - European Version , Naruto: Ninja Destiny European Version and Naruto: Ninja Council 2 - European Version were released for Nintendo DS .

Atari released the game Naruto: Ultimate Ninja Storm for the PlayStation 3 in November 2008 in Germany. Ubisoft released Naruto: Rise of a Ninja and Naruto: The Broken Bond for the Xbox 360. In these, the village of Konoha, true to the original manga, is recreated. On April 9, 2010, Naruto Clash of the Ninja Revolution 3 - European Version was released and on October 15, the game Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm 2 for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 followed. In this game, the story of the manga continues until after the attack by Pain and Akatsuki understood. The Ultimate Ninja Heroes saga, which consists of 3 parts, was released for the PlayStation Portable . Part 1 was released on September 14, 2007, Part 2 on July 10, 2008, and Part 3 was released on May 10, 2010. A side game called Naruto Shippuden: Legends: Akatsuki Rising was released on September 24, 2009.

On October 15, 2010, Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 2 was released for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. This was followed by the Naruto Shippuden developed by CyberConnect 2 : Ultimate Ninja Storm Generations . It was released on March 30, 2012 in Europe, on March 13, 2012 in the USA and on February 23, 2012 in Japan. The plot in the games always corresponds to the current status of the anime series, but not the manga series, which is much further. On March 5 and 8, 2013, the last game so far, Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 3 , followed in North America and Europe. The Japanese initial release won't take place until April 18th.

Trading card game

The Naruto trading card game has been available in German since mid-September 2006 and, in contrast to the US version, for which the rules and cards have been changed, is a direct implementation of the Japanese original. On March 1st, 2008, the Amigo company will host the first German Naruto trading card game championship in Berlin.

Light novel

The light novel Naruto: Innocent Heart, Blood Red Demon by Masatoshi Kusakabe and Masashi Kishimoto was published in 2002 in Japan and in 2008 in German by Carlsen Comics ( ISBN 978-3-551-62011-8 ). A second was released in Japan in 2003. Other novels translated into German are:

Commercial win

The manga was very successful in Japan. As of September 2014, the volumes had printed more than 130 million copies in Japan and an additional 75 million copies in 35 other countries. In February 2012, the series was the fourth best-selling in Weekly Shōnen Jump magazine , after One Piece , Dragon Ball and Kochikame . With a duration of 15 years, it stands out, along with the aforementioned and a few others, from the majority of the magazine series, which are usually concluded very quickly or after five or six years at the latest due to little success. The anime series is also one of the very few that run for many years, while most end after three or six months. In a poll by TV Asahi , Naruto was voted the 17th most popular anime series by viewers in 2005 and 2006.

Internationally, the series developed into one of the greatest manga successes since 2000. As with many other anime and manga outside of Japan, the order here is different from that in Japan itself: the anime series was initially broadcast successfully. This was followed by the publication of the manga, which quickly became a success thanks to the brand that had already been introduced and the TV series' fan scene, which required more products. The first seven volumes of the English-language Naruto version were among the 15 best-selling comics in the US in 2005, and the 2007 volumes ranked 10, 15 and 17. In 2006, Naruto was also on the USA Today bestseller list . In the United States, the 7th volume in the manga series also won a Quill Award . In France, Naruto was one of the best-selling manga in 2008. The six volumes that came out that year sold 220,000 times each. While One Piece is by far the most successful series in Japan, Naruto is mostly more popular in western countries and about as popular in Asia outside of Japan.

Reviews and analysis of success

The New York Times mentions the series in an article about anime on American television and also refers to Naruto in the title Just Watch Out for the Fox Demon in the Ninjas Body . The series with others, such as Fullmetal Alchemist and Samurai Champloo , is as good as the real films at prime time and ran very well in the night program slot. Naruto is possibly the most impressive of these series, since intensive use is made of the typical style elements, but these are still subordinate to the plot. There would be not only action but also scenes of reflection and feelings. The attraction of the series, according to Jason Thompson , lies in its Japanese elements for American readers, but in fact the work is very western: long fight scenes and actors with superhero-like powers. However, unlike in western comics, they owe this to hard work. The characters are well described and the excellent imagery creates a detailed, imaginative world. The mood fluctuates between self-confident coolness and melodrama, but the plot always takes its topics seriously. This seriousness without irony also distinguishes the series from other, more humorous series such as One Piece . The consistent world of self-sacrifice, heroism and drama created in this way is particularly attractive for older young people. Helen McCarthy calls the series a version of the classic hero's journey prepared for her generation . The story of the misunderstood orphan, who learns to make friends against prejudice and hostility and to master his own strength, appeals to many young readers. Alexander Zahlten puts the series in line with Pokémon , Yu-Gi-Oh! and other works dealing with eternal struggle and self-improvement and completion. They speak of the possibilities and impossibilities of transformations as well as encountering and crossing the boundaries of identity. According to the Anime Encyclopedia , the reason for the great success of the series is also the consistent implementation of the Shōnen- typical plot concept, which repeatedly offers the opportunity to introduce new characters. Over time, according to the 2006 criticism, the series got into a fight against the "weekly opponent" in order to provide the audience with the action they demanded, with the overarching plot falling under the wheels. Nevertheless, the series is one of the defining children's series of the early 21st century.

Fujimoto Yukari suspects that the reason for the comparatively greater success outside of Japan than in the country of origin is the fantastic, Japanese-inspired world that remains without a realistic depiction of ninjas or Japan. Naruto is a "hyperninja" story with a blond, blue-eyed protagonist, whose attraction comes from an exotic orientalism. The conveyance of the importance of teamwork and the transfer of knowledge from the older generation as well as the thematization of inferiority complexes and their overcoming in the sense of an educational novel contribute to the identification of the readers and thus to the popularity. Fujimoto Yukari sees very conservative elements of the series in the topic of preserving the traditional order and respecting the older generation. She also describes the image of women as conservative and backward. Women do not appear as fighters who are equal to men and mostly deal with their love interests instead of training. Even when women take on stronger roles in the second half of the work, which Fujimoto Yukari attributes to Kishimoto's marriage, they are then healers and helpers, rarely active fighters of equal rank. This division of tasks appears in the series as an inevitable result of natural, fundamental differences in the abilities of men and women. As a result, the female characters are mostly simple, annoying, superfluous and therefore not very suitable for identification. This is why she sees the comparatively low popularity of Naruto among female readers. Many mangas published at the same time showed a much more differentiated image of women with strong female characters, not infrequently role models or successful rivals of the male protagonists. Jason Thompson calls Naruto the "manga that made ninjas cool again". After the serious and dark ninja series of the 1960s and 1970s, from the 1980s onwards, the subject was more and more the subject of comedies and parodies and also went out of fashion overall. Kishimoto freed the genre from many clichés and placed it in a fantasy world, breathing new life into it.

The magazine MangasZene writes that the story is developing slowly due to the many ongoing battles. But the series is convincing due to the topics addressed and its humor and the fights are always a meaningful part of the plot. The dialogues are "accurate and funny", Kishimoto saves bad sayings during the fights. The characters all have their own weaknesses and the reader can empathize with them. Kishimoto's drawing style with its "fine line" clearly differs from that of other draftsmen and continues to develop over the course of the series. Although the "excessively used speedlines [...] sometimes the background is lost", this is compensated for by detailed splash pages and at least one elaborate panel per page. The change in the characters' facial features shows how they are getting older. Overall, Kishimoto offers through style and narrative a "world worked out down to the last detail" that is not profound, but "well-made adventure fun, told competently and lovingly". The Animania calls the manga "a combination of action, comedy and insightful scenes". The variety of characters is impressive and the series is highly recommended for entertaining entertainment. The stories are funny, exciting and imaginative, the characters are lovable and developed with good intuition. The style convinces with clear lines, carefully crafted protagonists and unconventional perspectives. Humorous scenes are supported by the use of super deformed style , fight scenes are dynamic and “quite bloody”. In the many years it has been published, the series has not lost its appeal, but has gained even more through further development and higher standards.

The anime series won an AnimaniA award for the best TV series in 2007 after a readers vote . In Germany, the broadcast of the anime series on RTL II did not have the hoped-for success with Dragon Ball or Pokémon . For RTL II, the quotas were an indication that the “anime boom” was simply over. According to MangasZene, the fights in the anime are even longer than in the original so as not to overtake them. The filler sequences used for the same purpose may bother some fans, but they offer “varied and entertaining stories [...] for in between”. The soundtrack was used in an original and appropriate way and the Japanese synchronization was also chosen appropriately. The animation quality is a bit weak at first, but improves over the course of the series. The “fast-paced anime”, according to the Animania, offers well “staged fight scenes and humor”, which with super-deformed style and ingenuity take the viewer “into the sometimes funny, sometimes serious fantasy world of the ninjas”. The anime was well done in the very faithful adaptation of the dramaturgy, style and characters. The animations are "mostly fluid" and despite the use of still images, the battle scenes looked dynamic and carefully staged. The original version does not conceal the fact that blood was spilled in the fighting without exceeding the "limits of the previous evening's entertainment". The “atmospheric and carefully worked out settings” and “colorful and detailed backgrounds” were “on an above-average level”. The soundtrack is described as "pleasantly inconspicuous" and underlines the build-up of tension and emotions. The German synchronization was successful in the humorous scenes, but the thoughtful undertones were often missed. The edited German version could not meet the requirements of the manga template and the fans.

Readership and fan scene

The target readership of the magazine and the paperback edition in Japan initially includes male readers between the ages of 10 and 15. The actual readership goes beyond this, however, and their holdings are far greater than the sales figures, as the magazines and anthologies are often read by several people and reading copies are on display in shops and restaurants. The demographics of the magazine's readership are very mixed. Around half are older than the target group and a fifth are women. The readers of the series are estimated to be around a third female and over half older than 18 years in the target group through the sales of the anthologies. The proportion of female readers is below average compared to other, similarly successful series. In particular, the female characters in the series are unpopular among fans, both compared to the male characters and female protagonists of other series. There were many fan productions for Naruto very quickly. Just one and a half years after the manga started, there were 900 fan groups at the largest Japanese fan comic fair, Comiket , who offered works on Naruto . Over time, this number fell to 244 in winter 2011. Fanfictions , for example, on the largest online platform, fanfiction.net, were almost 300,000 works by March 2012, including 235,000 in English. Most of the stories are short, only a few are novel length. Especially with fan fictions, the fan works are accompanied by comments and discussions, which together form an extensive corpus of fan texts or meta texts on Naruto .

Despite the comparatively small number of female readers, an unusually large female fan scene is active among the fans of the series, producing Yaoi - Dōjinshi and similar fan works. These deal with homoerotic couples of the male protagonists and are aimed at a female audience. Yukari Fujimoto explains this from the fact that the female protagonists are not very suitable for identification, but rather disturb. Therefore, the proportion of those readers who choose an alternative reading of the story and who invent stories about relationships between the male characters in fan circles is increasing. Despite the fact that the female readership is not even half as large as One Piece , this scene is significantly larger than in the comparative series. The most popular couple, according to an evaluation of the long-term offers at Comiket, is Kakashi × Iruka. The main characters Sasuke × Naruto or slightly less but increasingly popular Naruto × Sasuke would be well behind. Yukari Fujimoto sees the reason for the preference of the adult generation of the characters primarily in the average age of the scene in question from their early 30s. In addition to the older fan scene, which is more female, there are other “factions”. Jessica Bauwens-Sugimoto and Nora Renka examined the younger male fan scene, in particular erotic or pornographic fan fictions of the harem genre . They find that this group is characterized by rejection of established older fans, rejection of Yaoi to homophobia as well as violent and sexualized language in the author and reader comments, which would not be accepted in the older fan scene. A character that is particularly popular in harem stories is Naruto Uzumaki, with whom the authors identify strongly. Its character, however, often deviates more and more from the original as the story progresses, with ideal ideas of the authors being projected into a Mary Sue . The increasingly large deviations from the original text have stories from this scene in common with Yaoi stories.
