MUCC ( Japanese ム ッ ク , mukku ) is a Japanese band founded in 1997 , which can be assigned to a stylistic split from visual kei . MUCC combine different musical genres; here there is a fusion of the popular Japanese music of the 1970s with very catchy melodies and western Nu Metal .

Guitarist and band leader Miya decided on the name MUCC. This was originally the name of a character from the Japanese children's program Ponkickies. MUCC are also known as 69 because the combination of six and nine ( 六九 ) can also be read as “mukku” in Japanese.

Band history

MUCC was established in 1997 in Ibaraki Prefecture . The founding members were singer Tatsurou, then known under the name "Tattoo", guitarist Miya, bassist Hiro and drummer Satochi. In the following year 2 demo tapes , NO ?! and Tsubasa wo kudasai , published. Aika , produced by Misshitsu Neurose records , followed.

In February 1999, Hiro left the band and was replaced by YUKKE, a childhood friend of Miya's. The next demo tapes Shuuka and Aka were released until the first mini-album Antiiku was released on December 25th, which was released six months later in the second printing .

In 2000 the band had their first interview with the famous Japanese music magazine Fool's Mate . Tattoo changed its name to Tatsuro.

The first album Tsuuzetsu and some singles followed. In 2002 MUCC started their own label Shu at Danger Crue Records and the official fan club Shuu no to was founded. In September, their second album HoumuraUta was released, the first pressing sold out within a short time. In mid-2003 they were signed by the major label Universal Gear .

With the release of several albums and an incredible number of more than 600 concerts, they established themselves in the Japanese music business. Her style changes from album to album, just as her styling slowly moved away from visual kei and became more normal, because, according to Tatsurou in an interview, the make-up does not match the songs and the music should be without visual aids .

They have found their way to Germany since 2005. The Gan-shin label has released six of their albums and one of their singles ( Saishuu Ressha ) and announced further releases. It was also the year in which the first European concert was played. Since then they have played every year in Europe, most recently in 2007 during their “World Tour” a. a. on March 23rd in Saarbrücken and from the 27th in Hamburg together with BALZAC. The German cities of Cologne, Munich and Berlin followed.

Relatively early in 2008 they announced that they would be part of the Taste of Chaos 2008 tour with their Japanese colleagues from D'espairsRay and The Underneath , which includes 46 tour dates across America. There they stepped u. a. with Bullet for My Valentine , Atreyu , Story of the Year , As I Lay Dying and Avenged Sevenfold , with whom they have made friends. The tour will continue from October 9th in Hamburg and will lead through Europe, but above all through England.

On October 3rd, 2009 MUCC started their Solid Sphere Tour in Russia. For the first time they were also in Latin America and played two shows in Chile and Mexico. The final concert took place on November 16th in Japan at JCB Hall .

Mucc initiated in 2010 with a concert for Valentine's Day in the NHK Hall , where they announced the release of their new album. Karma was launched on October 6th and combines post-disco and dance music with their well-known hard rock and heavy metal sound.

The year 2011 brought the Mucc History Gigs 97 ~ 11 Show at Nippon Budokan on May 21st and the move to the Sony Music Associated Records label of Sony Music Entertainment Japan. Her single Akatsuki was initially sold exclusively at this concert and the next day, later it was made available for online purchase. The proceeds went to the victims of the 2011 earthquake in Japan . MUCC's next single Nirvana was released on March 7, 2012 and was used as the opening song for the anime Inu x Boku SS . This is the band's third contribution to an anime; Chain Ring as the ending theme for Zombie Loan and Yakusoku as the opener for Night Raid 1931 were used before .

MUCC have announced another album, Aishū no Antique , for the same year , which will contain digitally edited songs from their early albums Antique and Aishū and a 32-page booklet . In addition, three live DVDs of the Mucc vs ム ッ ク vs Mucc concert, which took place on the occasion of the band's 15th anniversary on June 9, 2012 in the Makuhari Messe , will be released.

music

The music of MUCC is melodic, emotional hard rock , which can be assigned to a traditional Far Eastern way due to Tatsuru's variable and expressive voice. Some songs have reggae or blues touches in some places , others go in the direction of thrash metal .

What is noticeable is the melancholy and longing, which is particularly evident in her more melodic songs. Miya and Tatsurou are the main songwriters, individual songs were written by the other members. They refer to depression, despair, fear, Weltschmerz, love and friendship. Some texts deal with their rejection of contemporary Japanese society. They dedicated the negative song Akasen to Tokyo .

On the album Gokusai MUCC show themselves from their most diverse side to date. So some songs sound like they were from the Homura Uta times, while others show the modern style of MUCC (like on album 6 ). Gokusai includes, among other things, the styles of reggae and pop .

On the album Shion , electronically alienated instruments and synthesizers are used for the first time. In return, there are "heavier" songs on the album as usual.

In 2010 the band performed at their first concert of the year in the NHK Hall in Shibuya, Tokyo, where they presented themselves in a completely new way, especially in terms of style and show-like performance. The song "Yakusoku" became the opening song of the anime "Senkou no Nightraid".

Then Karma was released in autumn 2010. Compared to the previous album, this album was again quite electronic, but not in the dark way like Shion . In addition to electro-heavy songs (Falling Down, Zeroshiki, Chemical Parade Blueday, Freesia), the CD also features ballads (A., Polaris, Hane), but also a jazzy song (Daraku) or faster, heavier numbers with brass (Circus, Lion).

After the 15th anniversary in 2012, a re-release followed in August called Aishuu no Antique , which included the two classics Aishuu and Antique .

In November 2012, after almost two years, Shangri-la , Karma's successor, followed . While the singles “Arcadia Feat. Daishi Dance ”and“ Nirvana ”were more in the style of Karma , Shangri-la relies on the usual colorful mix of genres. The song "Mother" was even used as the ending for the anime "Naruto", while "KyoranKyosho ~ 21st Century Baby ~" was used for a horror movie called "Fuan no Tane". The song "Nirvana" was used in the winter of 2012 for the opening of the anime "Ino X Boku SS".

This album was followed in 2013 by the singles "Halo" and "World's end", which continued the tradition of the genre mix on the album The End of the World , which was released in 2014.

After her European tour in spring 2015, her mini-album TRENDY -Paradise from 1997- was released in the summer , which as a concept album with electro elements ("Suiren", "D ・ f ・ D (Dreamer from Darkness)") her musical style Role models like Korn ("HATEЯ") or visual kei bands from the 1990s ("BLUE -Tell me KAFKA-", "Rendez-vous") took up.

The follow-up album Myakuhaku from 2017 was also mixed. Pop ("CLASSIC"), punk ("BILLY × 2 ~ Entwines ROCK STARS ~"), disco sound from the 70s ("Himitsu") and psychedelic Rock ("Commune") processed as well as harder rock ("Myakuhaku", "Zettai Zetsumei" or "Fuka").
