Story of the Year is an American rock band with post-hardcore influences from St. Louis .

Band history

The story begins in 1995 when the band members were still playing in different local groups:

  • Dan Marsala and Ryan Phillips were in a rap and roll band called 67 North
  • Ryan Phillips was also playing Means Well with future Story of the Year member Josh Wills
  • Adam Russell and Ryan Phillips were in the band Locash and they gave their best
  • Phillip Sneed was busy forming the band Sound Advice , which was later renamed Maybe Today .

Story of the Year was founded in 1996 under the name Big Blue Monkey . After a few line-up changes, they changed the name to Story of the Year in 2002, as a blues band called Big Blue Monkey already existed.

After some demos and EPs had been recorded, the band was discovered by Maverick Records in 2002 . Story of the Year played as support for several major bands (e.g. Linkin Park , POD and Hoobastank ) and on the Vans Warped Tour, and released the album Page Avenue in 2003 , which sold extremely well worldwide.

The band achieved fame through the song "And the Hero Will Drown" from the computer game Need for Speed: Underground , as well as through the extracts "Anthem of Our Dying Day" and "Until the Day I Die" from the album Page Avenue , die Platz Reached 10 and 12 on Billboard's Modern Rock Tracks Charts .

In November 2005, the band released their second studio album, In the Wake of Determination , but it was never able to build on the success of the previous record. Single releases were "We Don't Care Anymore" (2005) and "Take Me Back" (2006). The latter was "defused" in the radio version, that is, the screaming at the end of the song was replaced by conventional singing.

In the fall of 2007, the band announced the end of their collaboration with Maverick. Since then they have belonged to Epitaph Records , which market their album The Black Swan , which was released on April 18, 2008 in Germany .

In February 2010 the band released their 4th studio album called The Constant . The record reached number 4 in the US Alternative Charts.

On March 8, 2013, the band announced via Facebook that on the occasion of their 10th band anniversary (as Story of the Year) they would be going back to the studio to re-record their first CD Page Avenue as an acoustic version. This album was released on October 8, 2013 under the title Page Avenue - Ten Years and Counting on iTunes , Amazon and in their own merchandising shop (limited edition).

On September 30, 2014, the band announced on their Facebook page that bassist Adam Russel was no longer part of the band.

Story of the Year announced on November 8, 2016 on Facebook that they were working on a new album but they needed fan support. For this reason, a crowdfunding campaign was launched on pledgemusic.com to finance the album.

On August 13, 2017, the band announced via Pledgemusic.com that their new album would be called Wolves and would be a so-called concept album . It was also announced that the first single from this album, Bang Bang , will be released the following week on August 18, 2017.
