Warped tour
The Warped Tour is a Company founded in 1995 punk - and extreme sports - Festival . Since the skateboard shoe manufacturer Vans sponsors the festival every year, it is often called the Vans Warped Tour .
A special feature of the festival, which takes place around the world for several weeks every year, is the mix of live performances by well-known and unknown punk , hardcore and alternative bands as well as the use of halfpipes on which well-known skateboarders and BMX riders show their skills.
In 1998 the festival left the United States for the first time and toured Australia , Japan and Europe . In 1999 the New Year tour began in New Zealand and Australia before heading to the USA and then to Europe. In 2005 the US tour lasted eight weeks, during which around 500 musicians performed on nine stages and half a million spectators attended these events.

The Warped Tour was launched in 1994 by Kevin Lyman . He had the idea of starting a tour while organizing skateboarding events like the Vision Skate Escape or the Holiday Havoc - the music that played the theme of skateboarding. The name Warped comes from the short-lived Warp Magazine (published by Transworld), which specialized in surfing , skateboarding , snowboarding and music . The original working title for the festival was The Bomb . However, the plan was abandoned after the bombing of the Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City in April 1995, as Lyman feared negative press and a boycott.
Since the first Warped Tour in 1994, every concert has been played on outdoor grounds. However, there was an exception in 1996: In Washington, DC , a concert had to be moved to the Capitol Ballroom due to a problem with the operators of the actual venue . In 1998 the festival was held on an international level for the first time. Concerts took place for the first time in Canada , Australia, Japan and Europe .
A year later, in 1999, the Warped Tour began in New Zealand and Australia and continued over the summer in the United States. The tour ended in Europe. In 2006 the organizers started the Warped Eco Initiative . Since then, the buses of the participating bands have been refueled with eco-diesel , so that by 2006 the consumption of petroleum could be reduced by 30%. There is also now a stage that is completely operated by solar energy . Eight to ten artists can appear on this stage per show.
From 2009 to 2011 there was only one main stage, so the artists were able to play at least 40 minutes. Before that, the performing artists took turns on two main stages, which meant that they only had 30 minutes of playing time. Since 2012 two main stages have been specified on the Warped Tour . Each artist appears there for a maximum of 35 minutes. The Warped Tour 2012 also took place outside North America for the first time since 1999 . 2013 followed appearances in several countries in Europe and also in Australia. In Europe, the Warped Tour concerts are organized by the British concert company Kilimanjaro Live .
In addition to the bands, extreme athletes also perform on the tour . For example, there are halfpipes for skaters and bikers . It is also worth mentioning that the organizers offer a huge area for the participating bands, record companies, non-profit organizations, sponsors and magazine publishers to offer merchandising items, which gives the tour a flea market atmosphere. The catering has switched to washable cutlery. The tour offers free meals for the children who volunteer to take care of the recycling during the tour .
In November 2017 it was announced that the Warped Tour will be held as a festival tour for the last time next year. The reasons for this are both declining ticket sales and the low number of upcoming bands, as well as recent developments in the summer music festival landscape in the United States. According to Lyman, individual events with the name Warped will take place in the future .

Criticism and controversy

Several musicians who took part in the early stages of the Warped Tour have criticized it in the past. While Rob Pasalic ( Saint Alvia Cartel ) was positive about the development of the concert tour, artists like Joe Queer ( The Queers ) or Keith Morris ( Circle Jerks ) were rather skeptical.
Queer complained in 2006 that the Warped Tour had gotten worse over the years. In the early years only groups that had come together out of a love of music played, nowadays, according to Queer, it is mainly bands developed by studios that would perform at the festival. He referred to the musicians as jocks and meant to deny today's music.
“You play music because there's something inside of you that says you have to play music. Now you get bands like Fall Out Boy that are basically created in the studio. The Warped Tour changed it. Fuck it. I just don't like that shit. All the guys in the bands remind me of the jocks I hated in high school. To me a punk gig is a small sweaty club with the audience right in your face knocking over the mic stand and boogying off the energy. "
“You make music because there is something inside of you that says you have to make music. Now you have bands like Fall Out Boy that were practically created in the studio. The Warped Tour has changed. Fuck it all. I just don't like that crap. Everyone in the bands reminds me of the idiots I hated in school. For me, a punk concert is a small, sweaty club where the audience stands right in front of your face, knocks down the mic stand and lets off the energy. "
Morris raised criticism in 2012, saying that kids should go to the military or the desert today instead of signing a mega-record deal with a record company to pay for travel, hotel and haircut expenses .
“These kids that are on the Warped Tour, they should have no choice but to go into the military, and go off to some desert somewhere and spend some time in the desert, rather than having some big, ultra mega record company giving them lots of money and paying for their hotels and buses, making sure their hair is trendy, and that they are wearing the proper clothes that all the kids like and wear, and all that fun shit. "

Controversy
Over the years there have been musicians who have had problems on the tour due to problems with the organizers or with other artists performing there:
- D12 and Esham were both banned from the 2001 Warped Tour . The reason was that D12 allegedly attacked Esham. The trigger is said to have been the mention of Eminem's daughter in the piece Chemical Imbalance . Eminem himself wasn't there.
- Brendan Kelly claimed in 2004 that his group The Lawrence Arms would be banned from the tour for "life". In an interview he questioned the terrible organization of the group's sets and called the Warped Tour the "worst thing that could happen to the punk rock and DIY scene". The group only performed on the Warped Tour for a week.
- Guttermouth were allegedly removed from the lineup in 2004 for insulting the musicians of another participant on the tour, the group My Chemical Romance . The group later announced that they were leaving the tour as there were about ten unidentified groups who were not satisfied with the way the group performed and some threatened violence against Guttermouth's musicians.
- In 2006, Fat Mike said that From First to Last were upset about not being allowed to play on the main stage before 2 p.m. and refused to perform until the schedule was changed. The group left the tour on the grounds that their (then) singer Sonny Moore had vocal cord nodules and therefore had to spare his voice.
- Also in 2006: Fat Mike ( NOFX ) poked fun at Underoath and their musicians for their beliefs and attitudes towards gay marriage . The musicians were already friends with each other before, but Underoath later announced that this incident was a reason to question this friendship. However, the musicians remained friends until Underoath's split. Both bands played together again on the Warped Tour in 2009 .
- In 2008 the band Broadway Calls harshly criticized the composition of the lineup of the Warped Tour 2008. The criticism was about the large number of Christian-oriented artists who took part in the tour, which made it difficult for the band to feel comfortable:
“When there are 60 bands a day, and a majority of them are made up of either Christian jocks that play REALLY HEAVY MUSIC for Jesus, or pop bands with the only thing separating them from boy bands like Backstreet Boys are their dropped D tuned guitars hanging from their shoulders, it's hard to be comfortable. I look around, and quickly realize that the only difference between this and a huge frat party is that all these idiots play music. Bad music. Unfuckinglistenable music. "

- On the Warped Tour 2013, Joel Birch, singer of The Amity Affliction , verbally attacked his fellow musician Matty Mullins from Memphis May Fire in his speech. The reason was that Mullins had previously been critical of the clothing style of several young festival goers.
