Pierce the Veil is one in 2007 San Diego , founded post-hardcore band. It consists of the bassist and background singer Jaime Preciado , the two guitarists Tony Perry and Vic Fuentes , who is also the front singer of the band, and the drummer Mike Fuentes . Vic and Mike Fuentes are brothers.

The band has released four albums so far: The debut album A Flair for the Dramatic was released in 2007 on the Equal Vision Records label . In 2010 the second studio album followed with Selfish Machines . After a move to the record company Fearless Records , Collide with the Sky was released in 2012 , the group's third studio album; it was reissued in 2013 with the additional DVD This Is a Wasteland , which contains a one-hour documentary and three music videos. The fourth studio album Misadventures was released in May 2016 . The latter three studio albums entered the official US charts on Billboard . In addition, the band reached international chart listings for the first time with Misadventures . In November 2014 the song King for a Day from the album Collide with the Sky was awarded a gold record , in October 2016 the album too.

Pierce the Veil play post-hardcore with slight influences from progressive rock . The group's music is compared to bands such as Emarosa , Alesana , The Used and Chiodos , among others . Vic Fuentes' singing is also reminiscent of Claudio Sanchez from Coheed and Cambria . In their music, the group sometimes uses rather atypical instruments such as Spanish guitars and castanets . Due to the origins of the musicians, the term "Mexicore" established itself in the band's fan base. The lyrics are mostly about personal experiences of the musicians. Main lyricist Vic Fuentes takes inspiration from current family events, personal experiences in relationships, on tours and from friends when writing the lyrics.

For the 2013 tour documentary This Is a Wasteland , the group received a Revolver Golden God Award in 2014 . In 2014, the group was nominated for an award in seven categories at the Alternative Press Music Awards , three of which they won.

history

Before 2007: Before Today

Before founding the band Pierce the Veil , the Fuentes brothers played in the group Before Today , which they also founded. This was originally called Early Times , but had to be renamed Before Today due to copyright infringement . The group was supported by guitarist Joe Tancil and bassist Mitchell Ballatore. With the release of their EP Roots Beneath Ideals , the label Equal Vision Records became aware of the band and signed them. In 2004, An Celebration for an Ending, the group's only album, was released. The band broke up in 2006.

2007–2009: Foundation and debut album A Flair for the Dramatic

Pierce the Veil was founded in 2007 by brothers Mike and Vic Fuentes in San Diego , California . After their first band, Before Today, split up, Mike and Vic Fuentes decided to start a new band. The brothers continued to write their songs on their own in the home studio near Mission Bay , San Diego, funded by their parents, to have enough material to produce an album with the new band Pierce the Veil . The album, which the brothers worked on with Casey Bates in Seattle , Washington , was released on June 26, 2007. It is entitled A Flair for the Dramatic .

Shortly before the production of their debut album, the Fuentes brothers recruited two new musicians for the group: bassist Jaime Preciado and guitarist Tony Perry . First guitarist Perry was invited by Vic and Mike Fuentes. A little later he suggested that Preciado be added to the band as bassist. Perry and Preciado previously played together in a local metalcore band called Trigger My Nightmare . The work in the studio took a total of two months. The group toured the United States three months after the album was released . In the first two years after its formation, the band toured with All Time Low , Sleeping with Sirens , Tonight Alive , A Day to Remember , Chiodos , Emery , From First to Last and Mayday Parade .

In November 2007 Pierce the Veil also played a concert on the Warped Tour . The following year later, the group toured the entire Warped Tour. According to Fuentes, the group's appearance on the 2008 Warped Tour marked the first turning point in the band's career. Between January and March 2008 the group completed an extensive concert tour through the USA. As part of this tour, the group performed more than 40 concerts. Pierce the Veil played as the opening act for Mayday Parade , As Cities Burn and Emery . The first concert tour as headliner was The Delicious Tour , which took place in October and November 2008. The Fuentes brothers have been confirmed for the line-up of the short-lived music project Isles & Glaciers , founded in 2008 by Jonny Craig , former singer of Emarosa and Dance Gavin Dance , and Craig Owens , singer of DRUGS and Chiodos . The project released a single EP in 2010, which entered the official US charts. While Jonny Craig stated that Isles & Glaciers was "a one-off", Vic Fuentes announced that he could well imagine releasing an album with the musicians of the supergroup again one day .

During the Spring Fever Tour , which the group completed with All Time Low , Mayday Parade and You Me at Six , the musicians were already working on new material for their fourth studio album. The group planned with producer Tom Denney to move into the studio as soon as possible. On December 23, 2013, Jaime Preciado and Vic Fuentes confirmed that the album would be released in 2014. However, it was only announced on March 22, 2014 that the group had gone to the studio after completing their European tour with Bring Me the Horizon , which ended in December 2013, to write pieces for the new album. In an interview with Impericon it was said that the musicians took enough time to write the pieces and didn't want to rush anything. In total, it took five months to write the songs for the album, which took place in San Diego and later in Big Bear Lake . In an interview the group performed with Poppy Reid of The Music Network during their time at the Soundwave Festival in Australia in March 2013 , Fuentes announced that Jenna McDougall, lead vocalist for pop-punk band Tonight Alive , was in a play on the new album should be heard as a guest singer. According to Kerrang! the album should be released in January 2015. On September 17th, 2014 it was said that the album was almost finished. In an interview with Yahoo on February 6, 2015, however, it said that the fourth album should be released in the summer. On June 18, 2015, The Divine Zero was the first single from the fourth studio album. However, a release was postponed again for unknown reasons, so that the album for the year 2016 was announced on December 22, 2015. On March 15, 2016, the album's name and release date leaked through a rumor. Accordingly, it is called Misadventures and is to be published in May 2016. Three days later, this rumor was confirmed. Misadventures was officially released worldwide on May 13, 2016. Within the first week of sales, the album was sold over 50,000 times, which meant a chart entry at number 4 in the US album charts. Since 2018: New album

On July 6, 2018 it became known that musicians had started work on their fifth studio album.

Music style and lyrics

music

On the debut album, the group's music was described as a mix of emo , screamo and progressive rock . The musical compositions on the debut album are complex, so that a comparison with Sparta, Trail of Dead and at times with Queen is possible. The 2010 album Selfish Machines also features influences from punk . In addition, the musicians use instruments that are not typical of the genre, such as pianos or acoustic guitars . With the release of the second album, the group was compared to The Used , Chiodos and Emarosa. The group was also compared to Alesana . The group has earned praise in the past for its ability to mix "the ferocity of hardcore and metal with the songwriting and melody of pop music ."

Vic Fuentes' vocals alternate between pure vocals and screams . The sound varies in many pieces. There are frequent changes from slow to fast riffs , from hard to soft, from rock to poppy. The group emphasized that they would always work with their musical roots. The musicians don't see a metal band in Pierce the Veil , they have their own definition of hardness.

Elmar Salmutter from the German Metal Hammer described the music on her debut album A Flair for the Dramatic as "mature and multi-layered". He thinks that Vic Fuentes' voice is very reminiscent of Claudio Sanchez of Coheed and Cambria . The critic writes that the group was influenced by Silverchair on their first album . Salmut also mentioned Sparta as a musical influence on the album.

Florian Kapp mentions prog-rock passages on the third album Collide with the Sky as musical highlights. He describes that the music sounds more poppy compared to the previous albums. The critic also praises the use of Spanish guitars . The term “Mexicore” has established itself in the scene due to the origin of the musicians. Vic Fuentes himself said that the term Mexicore is a “mixture of heavy music with a Spanish feel”.

The band is known for using instruments that are atypical for their style of music. Acoustic guitars , castanets and bongos are used in the piece Bulls in the Bronx . Even if Pierce the Veil's music has nothing to do with Grindcore , Tom Araya , a musician from the band Slayer , described the group as a representative of “the new metal” in an interview with the German-language edition of Vice magazine in "Grindcore".

On Misadventures , the band orientates itself very close to the border to pop music . Influences from pop-punk can also be heard. Groups like Panic! at the Disco , Atreyu and My Chemical Romance are mentioned as musical references.

Texts

Vic Fuentes (2013)

Singer Vic Fuentes is mainly responsible for the lyrics of the group . He was rarely supported by other musicians or friends, such as former A-Day-to-Remember guitarist Tom Denney , Curtis Peoples and Dave Yaden in writing the lyrics. Many of the lyrics are about personal experiences of the musicians. Fuentes said that he did not follow any concepts when writing the pieces, but instead took inspiration from current or family events, personal experiences in relationships, on tour and from friends.

“I try not to really go with any sort of concept or anything like that. Some bands are very political; some bands only write about love. Our band is always about what has recently happened, whatever is happening in our families, in our lives, our relationships, our tours and our friends. Whatever is weighing heavy in our minds is going to come out. "

However, there are also several pieces where he was inspired by fans of the group. He wrote the songs Bulls in the Bronx and Hold On Till May for Olivia Penpraze, who hanged herself on April 3, 2012 . Friends of Penpraze wrote the musicians a letter because Penpraze had been a fan of the band.

'Bulls in the Bronx' has a crazy story to it. It's a sad story, but it inspired the song. It's about this girl who is 16, and her friends wrote to me and said she recently committed suicide, along with a link to her Tumblr page. It was one of the most haunting things I've ever seen. It's so sad because she was such a sweet-looking girl too. There were things on there where she would say how she thought she was worthless, ugly, and all this crazy stuff. That whole thing really stuck with me for a while, and I wrote this song about her.

- Vic Fuentes : opposite mindequalsblown.net about the single Bulls in the Bronx

The song I Don't Care If You're Contagious was also dedicated to a fan of the band. The musicians said in an article with Alternative Press magazine that a female fan had made contact with the musicians and reported that their former boyfriend was killed in a car accident. Both had met at a group concert. Fuentes wrote this song as a gift for her. The song Million Dollar Houses (The Painter) is addressed to Fuentes' parents, whereby his father was specifically addressed. The play is about his parents not separating despite financial problems, no matter how badly they were. He wrote the song A Match Into Water from the album Collide with the Sky about his girlfriend at the time, who at that time had to be treated very often in hospital for breast cancer .

In an interview with the Alternative Press it was said that Vic Fuentes holed up alone in a room writing the lyrics. Fearless Records owner Bob Becker rented a cabin for Fuentes to enable him to write the lyrics for the 2012 album Collide with the Sky . In a British Rock Sound article , the group was described as "a band for the lost, broken and lonely by virtue of the musicians' lyrics." Fuentes said he wanted to make sure that every text on every piece was fun and Inspiration spread among the listeners.

"I want to make sure that every lyric to every song is something that people can enjoy and become inspired by."

- Vic Fuentes opposite the Rock Sound

For the lyrics from the fourth studio album, Fuentes went camping in 2014 in addition to the regular writing sessions in order to be able to write more song material, which makes them even more personal than older pieces by the band. This album also features songs that he wrote about his former relationships. The song Gold Medal Ribbon is about his first great love, while Texas is Forever takes up the story of a failed relationship that he sang about in songs from previous albums. He wrote Floral & Fading for Danielle Perry and Song for Isabelle dedicated Fuentes to an overseas fan. The band's first song to take up recent history is Circles , in which he addresses the massacre in the Bataclan Theater during the terrorist attacks on November 13, 2015 in Paris . The background for the composition of the song was the statement of the band Eagles of Death Metal , which appeared in the Bataclan that evening , that some fans tried to protect their friends from the terrorists.

Band name

The band name comes from the song of the same name by the previous band Before Today , which can be found on the only published album An Celebration for an Ending . The name is based on the English term “piercing the corporate veil”, which means tackling problems at their roots and eliminating them.

Musician

Victor Vincent Fuentes (born February 10, 1983 in San Diego , California ) is the guitarist and lead singer of the band. He played on Before Today before founding Pierce the Veil . He was also part of the Isles & Glaciers supergroup , which existed between 2008 and 2010. He is also the main author of all lyrics. His younger brother, Mike Fuentes, is also active in the band. He was also a session musician with Cinematic Sunrise for a tour.

Michael Christopher Fuentes (born December 14, 1984 in San Diego, California) is the drummer for Pierce the Veil. He is the younger brother of lead singer Vic Fuentes. Like his older brother, Mike was involved in the supergroup Isles & Glaciers. In addition to his work, he is active as a rapper under the pseudonym MikeyWhiskeyHands . Under this pseudonym he released a single on Velocity Records . He was also the drummer in the hardcore band Underminded .

Tony Perry (born February 26, 1986 in Tijuana , Municipio Tijuana ) is alongside Vic Fuentes guitarist with Pierce the Veil. Besides bassist Jaime Preciado, he is also active as a background singer in the band. He has been running his own fashion label under the name Key Street since 2013 . Before he played with Pierce the Veil, he was a guitarist in a regional metalcore band. He's a vegetarian .

Jaime Alberto Preciado (born May 17, 1986 in San Diego, California) is bassist and background singer with Pierce the Veil. He previously played, like guitarist Tony Perry, in the metalcore band Trigger My Nightmare . He has also worked as a music producer . As a solo musician, he has released several individual songs so far, which can be found on YouTube .

social commitment

The musicians are active in several organizations that deal with the topics of bullying and suicide prevention or breast cancer (Keep a Breast Foundation) . The group acts as an ambassador for the Keep a Breast Foundation . A former ex-girlfriend of the singer Vic Fuentes developed breast cancer. For their collaboration with the Keep a Breast Foundation , the band was nominated for an Alternative Press Music Award in the social engagement category.

Pierce the Veil are also involved in several campaigns run by PETA 2, the youth organization of the animal welfare association PETA. One of their campaigns is Elephants Never Forget , which is directed against the keeping of animals (especially elephants) in the circus. In 2010 the group received the Liberation Award , which is presented annually by PETA2.

Allegations of sexual misconduct

In the context of the me-too campaign on the Internet and the associated increase in reports of sexual harassment and sexual misconduct against underage female fans, Mike Fuentes was also named on November 14, 2017 , who had a sexual relationship with a then 16 -year-old girl is said to have had. The person said they live in California , where sexual relations with teenagers under the age of 18 are prohibited. The message has censored images attached to show how Fuentes pleases himself in a video chat.

The exact allegations are rape under the law ( "statutory rape" ) and the solicitation of nude pictures via the AOL Instant Messenger. It is said that the girl and Fuentes established contact via MySpace and kept it going before they met in person for the first time at a Fuentes Band concert at the Chain Reaction in Anaheim. In 2008, both are said to have had sexual intercourse for the first time at a meeting during the Warped Tour in Pomona.

In the meantime, a second woman had spoken out and also accused Mike Fuentes of sexual misconduct. The 23-year-old woman said that Fuentes met the then 14-year-old girl during the Warped Tour 2008. They are said to have exchanged numbers and stayed in contact by phone for some time. When she turned 15, he reportedly asked her for nude photos.

In mid-December, the musicians commented on the allegations and announced that Mike Fuentes will no longer act as the band's drummer and will try to reflect on his life. As a result, participation in the concert tour with All Time Low in the United Kingdom was canceled in early 2018.

Fan base

Pierce the Veil have enjoyed a steadily growing fan base since they were founded. The group has a very close relationship with their fans. This is shown several times in their tour documentary This Is a Wasteland . In social networks like Facebook or Tumblr numerous fan sites exist. Most of the band's fans are female. According to Kevin Rutherford from UK Kerrang! no other band recorded such a large increase in fans as My Chemical Romance did in their early years.

In an article in Forbes it is said that the band's fan base is responsible for their success. For example, sales of Misadventures almost doubled compared to Collide with the Sky within the first week of sales , which resulted in the first top ten entry in the US album charts. During the production of Misadventures , which lasted longer than originally planned, singer Vic Fuentes felt a lot of pressure from the fans, which, according to Fuentes, also had a positive side. Author Steve Baltin describes the fan base as very loyal and almost an integral part of the band, where the musicians could continue to grow artistically.

However, the band received criticism for their method of offering special VIP tickets for fans. For example, a so-called VIP ticket for the Misadventures Tour in the United Kingdom cost 60 British pounds , although the price did not include entry fees, meaning that concert-goers had to pay for a regular ticket. All Time Low was named as a positive counter-model , which demands an annual membership fee of 25 US dollars for fan membership and in return offers additional services such as t-shirts, early bird tickets and other free services.

Concert tours

Pierce the Veil at Rock am Ring

Since their first concert tour, which took place between September 23, 2007 and October 2, 2007, the band toured the United States , Canada , the United Kingdom and mainland Europe several times . There are also performances in Australia , Japan and South America .

In their career, the musicians have appeared at several well-known music festivals, including Rock am Ring and Rock im Park , the Soundwave Festival , the California Metalfest , several times on the Warped Tour and the Slam Dunk Festival .

The group was seen with several well-known bands. Tours are available with Chiodos , The Amity Affliction , Dream On, Dreamer , Bring Me the Horizon , All Time Low , A Day to Remember , Parkway Drive , Silverstein , Blessthefall , Motionless in White , Attack! Attack! and Of Mice & Men to the band's account. The group played almost 280 concerts within a year if the musicians weren't working on new song material.

Live performances

Pierce the Veil is known for her often dynamic and energetic live performances, in which the musicians use the full width of the stage. The group also works with confetti cannons during their performance, which can be activated several times during a concert. In the meantime, the musicians are adding harder and more quiet acoustic passages, which usually consist of one or two pieces. The setlist is worked out in such a way that there are as many transitions as possible between the individual songs.

Pierce the Veil is also known for its lively interaction with the worldwide fan base; at concerts, singer Vic Fuentes usually asks a happy spectator from the audience onto the stage to sing a quieter song for her. While Fuentes plays both the clear and the screaming vocals during studio work, the roles of the singer and the screamer are split at concerts, so that bassist Jaime Preciado takes over the screaming vocals.

Perry started working at Guitar Center, Preciado at Costco. Meanwhile the Fuentes had created Pierce the Veil and tracked everything on their debut album by themselves. They were looking to fill out the lineup. 'Tony [Perry] was telling me he met the guys from Before Today, and they had invited him over to jam. […] I [Jaime Preciado] was focused on recording and was recording a bunch of bands. I was playing guitar again too, but all of a sudden, Tony said they needed a bassist. '"
  5. Ryan J. Downey: Kings for a Day - Finally . In: Alternative Press . tape 296.1 , March 2013, p. 81 : "The yin-yang dynamic of what would become the other half of Pierce the Veil wasn't lost on the Fuentes. 'It's funny because when they asked me if I knew any bassists, I told them I knew somebody who was the exact opposite of me. They kind of laughed but when they met him, they got it. I'm quite, shy and reserved. He's loud and talkative. It's pretty funny. '"
