Kerrang (own spelling Kerrang! ) Is a weekly British music magazine with a focus on rock music and metal . The title “Kerrang!” Is mostly attributed to the noise that an electric guitar connected to an amplifier makes and falls to the floor. The owner of the magazine is Heinrich Bauer Verlag, which acquired the English "East Midlands Allied Press" (Emap) in 2007 .

history

The first edition of Kerrang appeared in 1981, initially as a special issue of the weekly newspaper Sounds , which, unlike its rivals Melody Maker or NME, focused more on hard rock than on new trends and fashions. Kerrang! , in magazine format on higher quality than newsprint and in color, was dedicated to the flourishing New Wave of British Heavy Metal (editor-in-chief Geoff Barton helped Def Leppard to get her record deal), but also to more visually striking acts such as Venom , Hanoi Rocks , Prince . The cover of the first edition featured AC / DC guitarist Angus Young . About Bon Jovi and Queensrÿche was reported in Kerrang, footage than the bands still demo cassettes about Guns N 'Roses very early and - long - very detailed.

During the 1980s and early 1990s, mostly English or glam rock musicians were still on the front page, which changed abruptly when grunge bands like Nirvana rose to fame and popularity. The magazine repeated this procedure with every change in trend in the music business and is often criticized by its readers for this inconsistency.

The content of the magazine includes a wide range of mainstream rock and metal bands such as Nirvana, Green Day , The Darkness or Bon Jovi . In the UK, the magazine is closely tied to the post- nu-metal phenomenon of grungers, to which the magazine is likely to owe much of its sales growth in the early 2000s and its current commercial success.

Through a report on the Norwegian black metal scene in the early 1990s, Kerrang! significantly involved in the public interest in this scene that was triggered at the time.

Offshoot

German edition

Kerrang was released for the open-air festival Monsters of Rock and Popkomm 1992 . for the first time in German, initially every two months, from March 1994 monthly. Almost identical versions, also more extensive than the original published weekly, were produced for Spain and Australia. The German edition included authors who previously worked for Metal Hammer , for Spex and who later began to write for Visions or Rock Hard . Among the proportionally large number of employees was the long-time graphic designer of the English Kerrang! (Caroline Fish), the Östro-430 singer Martina Weith and the founder of Misanthropy Records . The German edition was discontinued when the Emap publisher decided to expand in France instead of Germany. In November 2011, another special issue from Kerrang was published! in Germany.
