Östro 430 was a 4-piece punk women band from Düsseldorf . It formed in 1979 and disbanded in 1984. Although they see themselves as a punk band, they are also included in the Neue Deutsche Welle .

history

The band was founded in December 1979 by Martina Weith, Bettina Flörchinger, Marita Welling and Monika Kellermann. Almost three weeks before the first appearance, Monika Kellermann got out and was replaced by Olivia Casali. On May 3, 1980, their first appearance took place in the Okie Dokie in Neuss , at a festival organized by the punk fanzine "Lubricant". They caught the eye of the band Fehlfarben , who they hired as the opening act for their Germany tour. In 1980 three songs ( Sexueller Notstand , Triebäter and Too Cool ) were released on the sound barrier sampler. In 1981 the first EP through thick & thin followed with a total of 8 songs ( Das Quietschende Bett , Sechzehn , Sexueller Notstand , Plastikwelt , S-Bahn , I stay out of it , Idi Otto , Too cool ). A few months after the EP was released, first Marita Welling and then Olivia Casali left the band. Gisela Hottenroth and Birgit Köster came for them. In 1983 the LP Weiber wie wir was released. At the end of 1983 a guitarist completed the line-up of the band, but there were no further publications after the collapse of the small independent record label Schallmauer-Records .

The band gave their farewell concert on May 25, 1984 in the Garath leisure center in Düsseldorf and broke up. On May 28, 1999 there was a reunion concert at Gate 3 in Düsseldorf.

Martina Weith sang on records from Family 5 , Prollhead and with the Doctors in the early 1990s . Bettina Flörchinger became a gynecologist . Olivia Casali switched to Fehlfarben at the beginning of 1982 , took part in background vocals and took over the bass on some pieces, alongside Hans Maahn after bassist Michael Kemner had switched to Mau Mau . On the single 14 Tage she is involved with background vocals and lyrics of the song Uh Cherie . After the big three-month tour through Germany / Austria / Holland, shortly before the Rockpalast gig, she left the band and moved to Italy. She has lived in Düsseldorf again since 1989 and is now called Olivia Tawiah.

Thees Uhlmann covered the song by the band I stay out of it and released it in September 2019 as a bonus track for his album Junkies und Scientologen.

style

Despite the unusual instrumentation (no guitar, e-piano instead of synthesizer ), the music of the four students was often considered punk , mainly because of its clear and angry lyrics . The titles Sexual Emergency and Sex Offenders are examples of the main themes of sex, outdated views on women, and philistineism. The band itself characterized their style of music as "simple but rough".
