Family Five (also Family * 5) is a German-language band by Xao Seffcheque (Die Post, Die Pest, Der Rest, ORAV) and Peter Hein ( Charley's Girls , lunch break , Fehlfarben ), which was labeled "Soul-Punk" in Düsseldorf in 1981 -Group was founded.

history

Peter Hein, 2017

Originally only intended as an ironic reference to current music fashion (funk, salsa), the label Schallmauer released a 12 "at the end of 1981 with the title Bring your body to the party . In the spring that followed, the band, which didn't really exist yet, appear at a festival in Munich. As a result, Seffcheque and Hein recruited Rainer Mackenthun (drums), Andreas Brüning (saxophone), Markus Wienstroer and Esther Nöcker. After the performance they decided to continue in this formation. A record deal with Teldec followed then released on indie labels .

At the beginning, the group only released singles and EPs that included cover versions of Hein's first band Lunch Break with titles such as Der Lange Weg nach Derendorf or Japaner in Düsseldorf .

In 1985, Resistance was the group’s first regular album. Musically, the group offered a mixture of punk , pop , beat and soul . Here already played Markus Türk (trumpet) and Gerald Leyking (trumpet) and Axel Schulz (saxophone), who later became manager of the Berlin trio Doctors with. Some critics now refer to the record as “the better monarchy and everyday life ” ( intro , Süddeutsche Zeitung , SPEX ).

In 1987, Hein, Seffcheque, Mackenthun, Cpt. Nuss (bass / ex- KFC ), Markus Türk (trumpet) and Hatti Graeber (saxophone) a relatively stable line-up that lasted over the next few years.

In 1991, Seffcheque dissolved the group after Hein had accepted the offer to participate in a reunification of the Fehlfarben. In 1994 Family 5 returned for a few reunion concerts. In 1997 there was even a new sign of life for the band with the single Vor, vor, Fortuna .

In 2002/03 a large part of the studio oeuvre as well as the live album Our corpses are still alive! on several CDs by the Wuppertal indie label PAUL! published again. In addition, the tribute album The time is ripe for Family Five was released , on which u. a. Farin Urlaub , Subterfuge and the Boxhamsters , but also musicians from Austria, France, Romania and Peru cover Family-5 songs.

The band performed with interruptions (1991–1994 and 1997–2002) from time to time (D, A, CH, I). However, it was not until 2004 before the group (without Rainer Mackenthun, who died in the meantime, André Hasselmann followed him in 2005 as drummer; in 2015 he was replaced by Simon Heinen) released a new album with Paths to Fame . On this, Hein made fun of the commercial success of the Toten Hosen and offered cover versions of SYPH and KFC , among other things .

On May 14, 2011 Family 5 gave a concert in the Kunsthalle Düsseldorf , parallel to the Eurovision Song Contest 2011 , which also took place in Düsseldorf on the same evening.

Xaõ Seffcheque, 2017

Surprisingly, the band announced in spring 2016 that they would be releasing a new album. What counts was produced by Ekki Maas and was published at the end of July 2016. A larger tour was carried out in September 2016, a smaller one in March 2016. The reactions to What matters were for the most part extremely positive. Spex writes: “One of the most important German bands of all time. […] After twelve years of silence, Family * 5 first recorded an album called WAS ZÄHLT, which secondly is so good that one wonders how it can even be. " Friday says:" This irresistible clique of boys has for another decade around Peter Hein and Xaõ Seffcheque, their aesthetics, their sound, their bilious and unpredictable view of the world are in focus. [...] An album as a convincing and energetic achievement - lush and highly concentrated. "And Spiegel Online feels" ... knee-deep in happiness. […] The great thing about this record is that it sounds exactly like what Superpunk and Tocotronic started with when they oriented themselves towards Fehlfarben and Family 5. Hein's pressed, as well as crowing and urgent voice is mixed up at the very front, not knocking at Stolpere , Hein screams these perseverance slogans in the end almost as sharply as Schinken- Glenn Danzig . The goosebumps side. Over time, the choir even breathes a vague Beatles spirit, or shall we say, if this shoe is a bit too big, Dexys in the geno phase. "

On December 13, 2017, the band played their first album Resistance live as part of the “Favorite Plate” festival at ZAKK in Düsseldorf . In addition, the band, in which Markus Wienstroer was back as guitarist for the first time in 30 years , accompanied Frank Spilker , Tobias Bamborschke , Carsten Friedrichs and Martina Weith when they then performed their personal favorite pieces from Family 5.

On August 24, 2018, almost as surprising as two years earlier, the next studio album, A real life in bottles , was released, the title of which paraphrases Alte ( Adorno ) and Neue Frankfurter Schule ( Robert Gernhardt ). The album also received mostly excellent reviews. The verdict of the specialist magazine Spex : “Family 5, a band that runs smoothly like a particle accelerator. Her brass sections always have so much energy that they could easily have compensated for the nuclear phase-out. "And Linus Volkmann writes in FREITAG :" You hear a song like 'Go over to the other' from that new Family 5 record and you can feel that which works so well precisely because the music is the only outlet for Hein's weird and rabid rage. This popular narrative: He could have become a pop star - for free. Or an early Campino - hey, one of those is more than enough. No, Peter Hein needed, couldn't, didn't want all of that. The only thing he needs is a gang like Family 5, which tailors wonderful songs for him and forces him to write lyrics like 'A real life in bottles' ”. The Berliner Tagesspiegel says: “In England you don't have to explain who the Buzzcocks or XTC are, even if they never became as famous as the Sex Pistols or The Clash . Here you have to explain again and again that Family 5 are one of the biggest German bands. " Christina Mohr finally states in Kaputt :" Xao Seffcheque , Markus Türk , Martin Graeber , Ferdi Mackenthun and Simon Heinen make you so dense, creamy, smooth, compelling soul-funk-punk-rock groove that simply has no comparison in this country. "
