Tribute album

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A tribute album is a music album that only contains cover versions of tracks by a specific musician and was usually only recorded by other musicians.

background

By recording a tribute album, the people involved express their appreciation (English tribute ) to the original performer. As a result of this separate relationship between author and performer, which tends to refrain from self-serving marketing, the proceeds from the sale of a tribute album are often donated to charity.

The introduction of the concept is attributed to the music producer Hal Willner , who conceived the LP Amarcord Nino Rota in 1981 in honor of the late film music composer Nino Rota . Subsequently, tributes to Thelonious Monk , Disney Cartoons, Kurt Weill , Charles Mingus and Harold Arlen were created under his direction .

Special tribute albums

Some albums have peculiarities that are either conceptual or related to the motivation for release:

  • Albums that are kept in a special style that is significantly different from the original. Including Is It Rolling Bob ?: A Reggae Tribute to Bob Dylan and Goth Oddity 2000: A Tribute to David Bowie .
  • Albums that, contrary to the rule of involving several artists, were only recorded by a single artist. Great Zeppelin , Great White's tribute to Led Zeppelin , or Wicked Grin , a collection of Tom Waits songs performed by John P. Hammond , are examples.
  • Albums that consist of a complete reinterpretation of an album honored in this way. This is what happened in the case of Legacy: A Tribute to Fleetwood Mac ’s Rumors and Dub Side of the Moon in honor of Pink Floyd and her LP The Dark Side of the Moon .
  • Albums where the lyrics of the original have been translated into another language, such as Tributo a The Cure - Porque no puedo ser tu and Tributo a Queen : Los grandes del rock en Español .
  • Albums released with the intention of making the featured musician better known. Mention should be made of Where the Pyramid Meets the Eye in honor of Roky Erickson , who is appreciated in music circles, but has hardly had any further success, or the double album Orphans of God as a tribute to the singer-songwriter Mark Heard .
