Monarchy and Everyday Life is the debut album by the German rock band Fehlfarben and was released in October 1980.

The album has a key role in the development of German-language punk music and is an important reference work.

The album was recorded between June and September 1980 in the EMI Studios in Cologne. Two years after its release, the single Ein Jahr (Es gehtangs), which was decoupled from EMI against the will of the band , became a hit and reached number 22 in the German charts.

After a new edition ( Remixed & Remastered ) was released in 2000 , the album received a gold record in 2001 - 21 years after its first release - for 250,000 units sold.

Another remaster was released in May 2017 on the Vertigo Berlin label .

The album is given great importance in the music press.

For example, the German-language Rolling Stone lists the album in the list of the 500 best albums of all time and at the same time as the best album by a German artist at all. The magazine also selected the album as number 1 of the 50 best German albums of all time .

Also in a ranking called The 100 records of the century by Spex , the album reached a top position in 15th place.

The Musikexpress voted Monarchy and Everyday Life at number 5 of the 50 best German records .

Markus Zinsmaier describes the album as a "revolutionary monument" at the time .

According to Michael Schuh, monarchy and everyday life are among the “best German-language albums of all time”.

In 2017, the German hip-hop band Antilopen Gang released an album entitled Anarchy and Everyday Life , as a reference to the classic, the Fehlfarben, published almost 37 years earlier.

style

The Rolling Stone writes about the musical aspect of the songs: "The songs are rough and exuberant, but they are not played in an amateurish way."

The texts are sometimes rich in political and socially critical metaphors. While some songs have a kind of self-contained plot (such as "Paul is dead" ), others are more a series of associations ( Militürk ; One year (It goes on) ).
