Anarchy and Everyday Life is the third studio album by the German hip-hop trio Antilopen Gang . It was released on January 20, 2017 on the JKP label . It is distributed by Warner Music .

background

In October 2016, the Antilopen Gang announced that they would release a new album. At the same time, the tour dates for 2017 were announced.

In January 2017, the band also announced that in addition to the new album Anarchy and Everyday Life, twelve old songs had been rearranged and recorded as punk rock versions. These are with the participation of guest singers such as Bela B. ( Die Ärzte ), Campino ( Die Toten Hosen ), MC Motherfucker ( terror group ), Jan "Monchi" Gorkow ( Feine Sahne Fischfilet ) and Wölfi ( Die Kassierer ) from the (German) Punk scene released as a bonus album under the name Atombombe on Germany . The album was completed within a few weeks. As an instrumentalist, Samuel Dickmeis alias Männi , who was already involved as a drummer in live gigs of the Antilopen Gang, took part in the punk album.

The album was released on January 20, 2017 via Jochen's small record company (JKP), the Die Toten Hosen label . The version with the album Atombombe auf Deutschland was released as a double CD and a triple LP including the CD version of the album.

Album cover

The cover shows a modern holiday resort with children sitting on a meadow in unreal 3D graphics that are supposed to be reminiscent of new-build advertising. The house is to be seen as an allusion to the cover of monarchy and everyday life of the false colors that were the inspiration for the title. Its cover showed an old building in need of renovation with an advertising panel. The shadow of a fighter plane just dropping a bomb can be seen on the lawn.

Music style and lyrics

The title of the album alludes to the Fehlfarben classic monarchy and everyday life and also refers to the punk background of the band members.

In terms of content, the album moves in a humorous, sometimes ironic, politically left context. In the song Tindermatch, for example, a fictional love story of a right-wing propagandist with the name "Lutz" (meaning is most likely Lutz Bachmann von Pegida ) and a Salafist counterpart named "Denis" ( Denis Cuspert , formerly Deso Dogg, later with the Islamic State ) is told Get to know Tinder via the dating app . RAF pensioner tells of members of the Red Army faction who are now sitting in the retirement home . the text is basically about people who got stuck who once belonged to the radical left scene.

In their title Baggersee, they ironically demand that the state of Germany should give way to a baggersee with an atomic bomb . The refrain also serves as the namesake for the enclosed punk album. Because of this title, the band is often assigned to the anti-German scene . While Koljah certainly knows how to agree with this labeling, he sees the designation primarily as an attempt at defamation. In addition, the band mentioned in the interviews that their lyrics were not "1: 1 serious" and that they "refuse to be pro-German."

Music videos

Two videos were shot for the two songs Das Trojanische Pferd (November 18, 2016) and Pizza (January 9, 2017), which were released before the album was released. After the publication, the videos on Baggersee , Liebe Grüße and patient collective followed .

The album received mostly positive reviews. Alexande Austel from the Laut.de e-zine rated it 4 out of 5 stars and sums it up that the antelope gang with their "self-irony, weird humor, social criticism, stupidities, but also deeper issues such as depression, suicide and self-esteem" still like experienced before positive response. It is a "funny and thought-provoking album" .

Dennis Pohl from Spiegel Online certified the new album to be “musically balanced and lyrically more complex than its predecessor”.

Frank Sawatzki from Musikexpress magazine writes that the album “amounts to a settlement with God, the world, Germany and with ourselves” . The antelope gait remains "unpredictable and agile" . The numerous political allusions on the record are also particularly emphasized.

Arne Lehrke from the hip-hop magazine Juice particularly emphasizes the diversity of the album: the record is "sometimes less, sometimes more politically charged" and "despite its approach to a large number of genres" it results in "a coherent album" . He sums up that this is a “triumph of versatility” .

The reviewer from the hip-hop blog rap.de even described it as “anti-Pope misanthropy par excellence” . So Danger Dan "continues to play his singing talent" and Panik Panzer shines "with exciting flows and unpredictable rhymes" .

Marinus Seeleitner from tonspion.de places the album in the overall context of the music genre: Hip-Hop is "not just rap technique and beat production, but also a lot of statement and (sub) attitude, and the antelope gang does not lead to anything very quickly" .

A more critical voice comes from the hip-hop blog rappers.in . For reviewer Yannik Gölz it is "a spongy and uncertain album by an antelope gang that somehow stands beside itself musically and thematically and tries to make it into a self-image with a lot of layers of irony". His verdict: "Works in places, but doesn't work all the time."

Steffen Bauer from MZEE also rated the album largely positively. In his review, he writes that there are many songs on the album that “take the notch of political tracks with a wink” . However, he complains about the beats that they are “mostly quite inconspicuous and pale in comparison to the lyrics” . Overall, he finds that “between laughing and crying, you are presented with the broad spectrum of human experiences” and you are “well entertained” .

The backspin Hip Hop magazine rated the album in a collective review of the entire editorial with 7.6 out of 10 stars. The album was mostly favorably discussed, although not everyone in the editorial team liked the punk parts.
