Tinder (dt. Scale ) is a commercial mobile dating - app , which aims to facilitate getting to know people in the area. It is used for initiation of flirtations , for tying acquaintances or for appointment of non-binding sex used. Tinder is owned by Match Group Inc., headquartered in Dallas , Texas .

The app uses a swipe system ( English swipe , strip ',' pull ' ), in which the user profile photos can view and -Infos from other users in their vicinity. If the user likes a person, he swipes the image to the right. If he doesn't like it, he swipes left. When both users have swiped each other's pictures to the right, a match is created and you can communicate with this person via chat .

history

Tinder was founded by Sean Rad, Jonathan Badeen, Justin Mateen, Joe Munoz, Dinesh Moorjani and Whitney Wolfe and was first released for iOS on September 12, 2012 . Tinder was first distributed on the University of Southern California campus . In 2013, 60 percent of users used the program daily, the majority of these users several times a day.

Since March 2015 it has been possible to withdraw the last election. The location can also be set manually. However, these two functions can only be activated by paying an amount via in-app purchase, whereby the amount differs from user to user and varies according to age. With the Tinder Gold function extension , users can see which members they already like and can influence their own matches more quickly. The Tinder Gold function can only be activated if Tinder Plus is already active and costs an additional five euros. In addition to the basic choice by wiping (swipe left or right), so-called super likes can also be awarded. There is also a function available that emphasizes your own profile (Boost). Both add-on functionalities are chargeable, with the Gold tariff including some super likes for free.

In January 2020, Tinder announced the expansion of the security function for users. The authentication of users is currently being tested in selected countries using selfies taken in real time. If the specified poses and the selfies of the user match, the user receives a blue tick behind his profile name and is therefore considered a "real user". In addition, American users, in cooperation with the Noonlight service, have the option of transferring planned dates to the Noonlight app and, in the event of danger, to alert the police via a "panic button".

As part of the COVID-19 pandemic , users were able to change their location at will until April 30, 2020. This feature was previously only available to members who paid for it.

In an interview with the American technology portal The Verge about the future of Tinder, Elie Seidman, CEO of Tinder, announced further functional extensions. So it is planned for 2020 to introduce an option for video chats between two matches, moderated by artificial intelligence (AI) . The AI should check these chats for nudity and, if necessary, be able to automatically end a video chat. Furthermore, a so-called "global mode" is planned, which will enable users to make their own profile globally visible. In contrast to the passport function, which is already available for paying users, you will not be able to choose a specific location, but will be displayed worldwide. In June 2020, the global mode was gradually activated, which is available in German-speaking areas as “Worldwide”. If there are no longer any suitable profiles in the selected range in the local location, you can now search for matches worldwide with the "Worldwide" function activated. If there are users in the area again, they are displayed with priority.

With the new subscription model Tinder Platinum , Tinder is expanding the functions that can be purchased. So it is possible for users of Tinder Platinum to attach a message to each so-called Superlike, which is displayed to the potential match before the actual match. In addition, likes given with the Priority-Like function are prioritized and displayed to the other person. All options of Tinder Plus and Tinder Gold are also available to the Plantinum user. Tinder Platinum is currently being tested in some regions and costs between 21.99 for one month and 54.99 for three months. Similar to Tinder Plus and Tinder Gold, the prices can vary according to the user's location, age and gender.

Create an account

A Tinder account can be created via the Facebook profile, the Google account or with an SMS- enabled mobile phone number, but this function uses a Facebook API. If the Facebook profile is used to log in, Tinder accesses the user's first name and age as profile information and selects five photos of the user as profile pictures. The photos can be selected individually via the Facebook profile or via your own gallery. In addition, users can describe themselves individually in a biography. In addition, it is possible to complete the profile with further information, including information about interests from a list predefined by Tinder, information about the profession and employer, information about the school or university attended and the place of residence, which of the current GPS localization may differ. It is also possible to link the Instagram profile and to connect to the Spotify audio streaming service to select favorite artists and favorite songs. In addition to the information provided when registering, it is possible to select the gender from around 37 gender identities and to show or hide this on the profile. There are also several options for specifying the sexual orientation that can be shown or hidden in the profile.

use

Tinder presents the user with the profile photos, first name, age and all other voluntary information of the user (profession, employer, university, etc.), of another person who was last in a previously selected area. The app determines the location via GPS data sent to the server, unless the user with premium functions has determined the location himself. In addition, the user can view the biography of the person displayed and all other voluntary information. Based on this information , the user decides whether he would be interested in a conversation with the other person. If both users rate each other as interesting, they receive a so-called match , which is displayed to both users. It is only possible to start a conversation with a match.

particularities

Using the Facebook profile, Tinder receives the basic information about the user. In order to optimize the person suggestions, the Tinder algorithm analyzes the profile information and the behavior when using the app and assigns them to an app-internal "ELO ranking", which, however, works differently than the Elo number in many sports. This ranking provides information about how well you are received by other people. The number of matches is a significant part of this process, but other factors, such as the variety of information with which users provide their profile, determine the final place in this ranking. Tinder hopes that the ranking will increase the hit rate of its users. The geographical location , the number of mutual friends and common interests play a special role here . Only after both users have rated each other as attractive can they chat with each other. This way, users have control over who can write to them and are not confronted with messages from people they haven't previously rated as attractive. Actions within Tinder are not reported on the user's Facebook profile (this is also not possible voluntarily). With Tinder's Matchmaker feature, users can create a connection between two of their Facebook friends without them seeing all of your information.

Tinder is available for iOS and Android devices. There are two unofficial apps for smartphones with the Windows Phone operating system . It is also possible on all televisions with Apple TV to use Tinder in HD and on the big screen. Since March 2017 it has been possible to use Tinder via the browser. The browser version of Tinder also has the WorkMode function , which enables the user to quickly switch between the normal Tinder interface and a website created by Tinder, which by its appearance suggests that the user is working. This is similar to the function of the boss button in computer games and apps. The Tinder Online function does not require any additional software to be installed.

user

According to Tinder, it will have six million paying users in 2020. In 2019, the number of paying users was around 4.1 million. Tinder's commercial target group is women and men between the ages of 18 and 25. According to a study by the US market research company Paragon Poll from 2013, around 20 percent of Tinder users have met someone they have become aware of using Tinder.

According to a ProSiebenSat.1 report for Galileo in 2016 , 1.4 billion so-called “swipes” were made to the left or right every day in order to evaluate profile photos. The total of 50 million users of Tinder achieve a total of 12 million "matches" per day

According to co-founder Jonathan Badeen, Tinder had two million users in Germany at the beginning of 2015.

criticism

  • In February 2014 it became known that the app contained a software error over a period of 40 to 165 days that made it possible to intercept and evaluate the GPS data of the person opposite. This error existed in both the Android and the IOS app. It was discovered by Include Security and demonstrated in a video. According to Include Security, Tinder was informed of the bug in October 2013; However, according to Include Security, the company did not react until December and only corrected the error in an update in January 2014. The error was caused by the fact that Tinder did not calculate the distance between two people on a server, but on the users' mobile phones .
  • Other points of criticism are the common technical problems that Tinder causes. In addition, the company behind it introduced age-based prices in March 2015, which range from 1.99 to 19.99 euros per month. The older the users, the more money they should pay per month.
  • A tinder stalking study was published in spring 2015. The focus is on the security risk that arises from using the Facebook profile as the only way to register with Tinder. Other users can use a screenshot of the Tinder profile picture and the Google image search to find out the identity of the user, especially if someone has not adequately protected their Facebook page with privacy settings.
  • The Tinder records are not protected from outside access. Anyone can search the profiles, even if the person searching is not a Tinder user. The online service Swipebuster, for example, uses the official Tinder developer interface.
  • In August 2016, a study was presented at the annual conference of the American Psychological Association , according to which Tinder users had a lower level of satisfaction with their own body and a higher tendency to objectify their own bodies and those of others. Critics of the study complain about the small sample size: 102 out of 1317 respondents said they used the app.
