From mid-2014 to the beginning of January 2015, the Galileo Knowledge Tour was stopped broadcast on Saturdays and then continued again.

The magazine Galileo Genial , which specializes in children, is currently being published. In addition, a Galileo section is printed in the journal Wunderwelt Wissen . The magazines are regularly advertised in the program.

criticism

concept

Occur

The quality of the content of the program is sometimes rated by scientists and journalists as questionable and unscientific. For this reason, the show is usually referred to as an infotainment magazine and not a science magazine. Nevertheless, the concept and design of the program as well as the sporadic appearances by scientists evoke associations with traditional science magazines in some viewers.

In fact, the impression of a science magazine is relatively often created, since the program is relatively often referred to as a "knowledge magazine", especially in television advertising. However, this impression proves to be untenable, since the so-called "experiments" in the program are mostly not based on a scientific basis.

Content

relevance

Journalism researcher Klaus Meier believes that Galileo has been imparting knowledge in a fun way since 1998 and that the show has become a trendsetter due to its success. But the program is tied to the medium and the target group, not to the relevance of the information. It will only be discussed “what can be shown as a story in exciting pictures and what is assumed to be relevant to the everyday life of the audience”.

Professional quality

Articles often contain technical errors. For example, was strawberry (a collection nut fruit ) in a report as berry fruit denotes a turboprop -Triebwerk the piston engines assigned, and referred to the moon as a planet, sodium hydroxide was used as a highly toxic, helium as nitrous oxide , and barium nitrate referred to as a high explosive, the color of the chicken eggs of The color of the feathers of the chickens or the claim made that CDs can only be polished from the inside out so that the data packets are not shifted (broadcast on July 16, 2008). A report on school reports also stated that, according to the “ first constitutional article of the Basic Law , personal rights are inviolable” (broadcast on March 3, 2009). In other reports it was said that the mains voltage in Germany was 220 V instead of 230 V. In the broadcast of October 4, 2010 called the "Galileo Elementary School Knowledge Test", the north-south alignment of compass needles was not with the earth's magnetic field , but with allegedly large iron deposits at the North Pole explained. This so-called magnetic mountain is a theory that was refuted in the 19th century. In the Galileo broadcast of November 12, 2014, the gold occurrence on earth was explained by the fact that millions of gold particles flew to earth about a million years ago after two stars collided.

Reporting on nuclear energy

In July 2009, the environmental protection organization Greenpeace criticized the coverage of the program on the safety of the Isar I and II reactor blocks . In addition to false statements of fact, Galileo were also accused of manipulative computer graphics. Inquiries from the environmental protection organization remained unanswered by the editorial team despite announcements to the contrary.

Content harmful to minors

At the beginning of 2015, the Commission for Youth Media Protection (KJM) reprimanded the magazine for showing content that was not suitable for young people under the age of 12 and therefore should not have been broadcast before 8 p.m. Specifically, this concerned an article in which one dealt with the question of what happens if you put your tongue to an icy iron rod. The KJM criticized the fact that they deliberately played with malicious glee and sensationalism without explaining the risks.

surreptitious advertising

The format often reports on companies that are also advertising customers of ProSiebenSat.1 Media SE. Corresponding products and logos are clearly visible. Among other things, an episode that was broadcast on December 2, 2013 and reported on the logistics of the Zalando company has come under criticism, since almost only the advantages and not the disadvantages of the company's logistics were reported. Contributions to Australian Homemade and Subway have also been criticized in the past for their advertising content .
