Campino (bourgeois Andreas Frege ; born June 22, 1962 in Düsseldorf ) is a German-British singer and songwriter . He is the front man of the Düsseldorf band Die Toten Hosen . He also worked as an actor in theater, film and television.

Life

Campino (2012)

Andreas Frege grew up as the son of the judge Joachim Frege and the housewife Jennie Frege. His mother was a native of England , studied at Oxford University and raised her children bilingually. He has five siblings, including his brother John, who is twelve years his senior, through whom he became aware of punk rock in England. His older sister Judith Frege is a ballet dancer and book author, and his three years older brother Michael Frege is a lawyer. Frege's grandfather Ludwig Frege was President of the Federal Administrative Court. Great-grandfather Franz Friedrich Konrad Frege (1843–1920) was the son of the Berlin-Schöneberg pastor Ferdinand Ludwig Frege (1804–1883).

When Andreas Frege was two years old, his family moved from Düsseldorf to Mettmann . There he attended today's Astrid Lindgren primary school and then a grammar school in Mettmann. However, after a year he switched to the Humboldt Gymnasium in Düsseldorf. There his classmates called him Campino after a candy fight in the classroom . He could not achieve the class goal twice and thus finally attended the same class as the two years younger Michael Breitkopf , also a founding member of the band Die Toten Hosen. Both passed their Abitur in 1983. Campino spent eight months in the Bundeswehr from October 1983 until he was recognized as a conscientious objector , and then did civil service , also together with Michael Breitkopf in the State Psychiatry in Düsseldorf-Ludenberg . From 1978 to 1982 he was the singer of the group ZK and then founded the band Die Toten Hosen with Andreas von Holst , Michael Breitkopf, Andreas Meurer , Trini Trimpop and Walter Hartung (called Walter November).

Andreas Frege has a son born in 2004 with the actress Karina Krawczyk . He took British citizenship in March 2019 and is therefore a dual citizen .

Song dedications

Campino wrote the song Alles ist Eins on the single Pushed Again for Rieke Lax, a girl from the Netherlands who died at the band's 1000th concert in the Düsseldorf Rheinstadion .

The song Our House , published on the album Immortal , is about Campino's childhood and the death of his father. With the title Nur zu Visiting , first appeared on the album away game , he came to terms with the death of his mother. Campino dedicated the song Outside Front Door from the album Ballast der Republik to his father and describes their relationship with one another. Since the death of his parents, who both died of colon cancer , Campino has been involved in various educational campaigns and publicly calls for participation in the preventive medical check-ups .

Campino has a high media presence both as a spokesman for the band Die Toten Hosen and as a person in Germany. Since the mid-1980s, he accepted invitations to numerous talk shows on television. Campino often acted as a journalist himself. In 1994, for example, Spiegel printed Campino's interview with the then youth minister, Angela Merkel , to whom he asked questions about her experiences with drugs, alcohol and her first contact with pop music. He asked Paul McCartney similar questions the year before for Stern magazine . A year before Joe Strummer's death, Campino interviewed the front man of The Clash in August 2001 for SZ-Magazin . In 1989 Campino had visited punk musicians Joey Ramone and Dick Manitoba in New York to interview them for ME Sounds . In spring 2016, the documentary London's Burning - Campino on the trail of punk was produced for arte and ZDF , in which Campino had conversations with Bob Geldof , T.V. Smith , Charlie Harper , Viv Albertine and Tony James , among others .

Campino was also seen several times as an actor. He took over in 1986 in the film losers by Bernd Schadewald a supporting role, in 1990 he played in the evening series The investigators a punk . In 1992 he played the leading role alongside Gisela Schneeberger in the comedy Long Saturday by Hanns Christian Müller .

Together with Eric Friedler , Campino directed the documentary Wim Wenders, Desperado about Wim Wenders in 2020 . The production was included in the official selection of the 2020 Cannes International Film Festival .
