Maria Happel (born October 16, 1962 in Elsenfeld im Spessart ) is a German actress and director .

Life

Maria Happel completed her acting training at the theater school stage studio with Hedi Höpfner in Hamburg. Her career began at the theaters in Bremen (where she also played the role of Édith Piaf ), Cologne and Hanover, before Claus Peymann brought her to the Burgtheater in Vienna in 1991 . In 2000 she followed Claus Peymann to the Berliner Ensemble before returning to the Burgtheater for the 2002/03 season. But she always remained connected to the Berliner Ensemble through regular guest appearances. Happel never allowed himself to be committed to a role subject. She plays both tragic and comic roles with great success.

In addition to acting, Maria Happel also discovered directing for herself. Initially mainly at the Reichenau Festival , later also at the Burgtheater, she staged a few plays herself - and also played some of them herself. Happel is also very well versed musically, she plays the organ and piano and is a trained mezzo-soprano . In 1995 she performed an Edith Piaf recital in the Akademietheater with great success. Since 2015 she can be seen in this role in "Spatz und Engel" in the Burgtheater. She was also seen twice in the “ Threepenny Opera ”: in 1996 as Polly Peachum under the direction of Paulus Manker and in 2006 as Spelunkenjenny under the direction of Klaus-Maria Brandauer .

In 2003 she received the Nestroy Theater Prize for Best Actress for her role as Maria Planck in the play "The Life of the Plancks". In 2016 she received the Nestroy Audience Award

Maria Happel has essentially dedicated herself to the theater. In 2010 she starred in the ZDF series Climate Change, directed by Doris Dörrie . In 2018 the first episode of "Dennstein und Schwarz" ran on ORF and ARD

Maria Happel teaches role design at the Max Reinhardt Seminar in Vienna. In May 2020 she was appointed director of the Reinhardt Seminar after taking over the interim artistic direction alongside Ulrike Sych in March 2020 . Annette Matzke became her deputy.
