Ulrike Sych (* 1962 in Salzburg ) is an Austrian singer and singing teacher and has been the rector of the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna (mdw) since 2015 .

education and profession

After her school education at the private grammar school for girls of the Ursulines in Salzburg, Sych completed her studies in music and instrumental pedagogy with the main subjects singing and piano at the “ Mozarteum ” University of Music and Performing Arts . She also studied Latin at the University of Salzburg.

Parallel to doing her trial service in 1985/86 at the Bundesoberstufenrealgymnasium (BORG) Salzburg, she studied singing with Dan Pressley, Delaware, USA. In 1986 she moved to the USA and continued her singing and role studies in New York City with Carolina Segrera-Bolden and Lester James Ottinger.

Artistic activity

Sych is a lyric soprano. Her repertoire ranges from oratorio and church music to classical song and opera / operetta to musicals . She sings concerts of contemporary music a . a. in cooperation with the Institute for Composition of the mdw. Her repertoire includes a. Works by Erich Urbanner , Iván Eröd , Kurt Schwertsik , Dietmar Schermann , Perikles Liakakis , Bernd Richard Deutsch and Margareta Ferek.

Her concert activities have taken her to Italy, Luxembourg, Germany, Switzerland, Greece, Turkey (Istanbul State Opera), Kazakhstan (Almaty State Opera), USA ( New York Fringe Festival ), the Czech Republic, Japan and Scandinavia. She sang staged performances of Schönberg's “ Pierrot Lunaire ” in Vienna, Prague and New York.

She wrote the children's books with the aim of introducing children to contemporary music through play

Teaching

Sych has been teaching at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna since 1989, and from 2007 to 2015 also at the Anton Bruckner Private University in Linz , where she headed the Institute for Voice, Singing and Music Theater. She is a lecturer in international master classes, for example at Wakeforest University, NC (USA); in Aristoxenos (Greece), at the University of Fukuoka and the University of Tokyo (Japan), in the State Opera Almaty (Kazakhstan), the 'Austrian Master Classes' and the 'Viennese Master Classes'.

In April 2019 she was appointed to the special commission to clarify the allegations against the Vienna State Opera Ballet School , where she is responsible for the field of education.

Academic activity

From 2009 to 2011, Sych was chair of the working group for equal treatment issues at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna and in 2011 became Vice Rector for Teaching and the Advancement of Women. The Vice Rector's tasks included evaluating the courses and awarding scholarships . She installed the “gender mdw” platform. As a result of a double occupation in her department, Ulrike Sych resigned as Vice Rector in April 2015. In May 2015 she was elected Rector for the 2015–2019 term of office by the University Council of the mdw on the proposal of the Senate.

From March to May 2020 she led the Max Reinhardt Seminar on an interim basis together with Maria Happel .
