In 1771, Empress Maria Theresia set up a “theatrical dance school” in which eight boys and eight girls were taught daily by two ballet teachers under the supervision of Jean Georges Noverre . Noverre's school was short-lived - it was closed after he left Vienna in 1774. In the 19th century, a ballet school was loosely attached to the Kärntnertortheater. It was only after the opening of the Haus am Ring in 1870 that the school was institutionalized by the “organizational statute for the ballet dance school at the kk Hof-Operntheater”. Classes took place in the opera's ballet hall.

The institute, which has been known as the “Ballet School of the Vienna State Opera ” since 1918 , was renamed “Ballet School of the Austrian Federal Theaters” in 1973 and in 1980 moved into its own premises in Hanuschhof 3 .

Since an organizational restructuring in 1999, it has again been called the “Ballet School of the Vienna State Opera”. The cooperation between the ballet school and the Bundesrealgymnasium with a musical focus, Vienna 3 (HIB) , and the connected boarding school, which has existed since 1983, ensures school education with a high school diploma , with school lessons taking place in the afternoon in the upper level .
