Martin Schläpfer (dancer)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Martin Schläpfer (born December 26, 1959 in Altstätten ) is a Swiss dancer , choreographer and ballet director .

Life

Schläpfer - from a farming family in Appenzell - originally wanted to become an organic farmer . During his school days he took violin lessons and learned figure skating. He began ballet training in 1975 at the age of fifteen with Marianne Fuchs in St. Gallen . In 1977 Schläpfer won a scholarship as the best Swiss at the Prix de Lausanne , which enabled him to continue studying ballet at the Royal Ballet School in London.

From 1978 to 1983 Schläpfer had an engagement as a solo dancer at the Stadttheater Basel with Heinz Spoerli . In the 1983/1984 season he was principal dancer with the Royal Winnipeg Ballet in Canada. After that he danced again from 1985 to 1989 at the Stadttheater Basel. As a result of an artistic crisis, Schläpfer founded the Ballet School Dance Place in Basel in 1990 , which he directed until 1994. Then he was ballet director at the Stadttheater Bern until 1999 . From 1999 to 2009 he directed ballettmainz at the State Theater Mainz .

Without being tied to neo-classical music in his work, Martin Schläpfer refers to George Balanchine and Hans van Manen in dance technique . At the same time, he postulates a range of interpretations from Antony Tudor to Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui .

At the beginning of the 2009/2010 season, Schläpfer became ballet director and chief choreographer at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein in Düsseldorf and Duisburg , where he reorganized the Ballet am Rhein with 48 dancers and the new building of an independent, ultra-modern ballet house. In February 2013 Martin Schläpfer was the preferred candidate of the State Secretary for Culture André Schmitz to succeed Vladimir Malakhov as director of the Berlin State Ballet . Schläpfer did not accept the offer. In 2016 he made his former dancer Remus Sucheana ballet director in order to be able to concentrate more on artistic work as part of a dual leadership. Martin Schläpfer returned to the stage as a dancer in 2012, 2014 and 2017 for interpretations of Hans van Manen's Pas de deux The Old Man and Me and the ballet Everyday created especially for him .

After negotiating the position of resident choreographer in 2018 as part of the current contract extension with Ballett am Rhein, it was announced in June 2018 that Schläpfer would succeed Manuel Legris as director and chief choreographer of the Vienna State Ballet and the Ballet Academy on September 1, 2020 .

On October 2, 2018, Schläpfer was honored by the German Federal President with the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany .
