Nicol Williamson

Nicol Williamson (born September 14, 1936 in Hamilton , Scotland , † December 16, 2011 in Amsterdam , Netherlands ) was a British actor in film, television and theater.

Life

Williamson began his acting career at the Cambridge Theater in 1960 and later worked on stages in London . He became one of the most important actors in Shakespeare plays, a. a. in Macbeth and Hamlet . First roles in film followed in the 1960s. The famous 1969 production of Hamlet at the Roundhouse Theater was later staged in New York and filmed under the direction of Tony Richardson . In the 1970s and 1980s he had major engagements in English and US films; So he played alongside Sean Connery in Richard Lester's Robin Hood film Robin and Marian the Little John or in 1979 the leading role as a double agent in Otto Preminger 's last film The Human Factor . In 1981 he played the magician Merlin in John Boorman's Arthurian film Excalibur . After 1997, Williamson was only active in the theater.

Williamson has been nominated twice for the Tony Award for theater roles and twice for the British Film Awards for film roles .

Nicol Williamson was married to actress Jill Townsend from 1971 to 1977 .
