history

In the Middle Ages the place was still called Cadzow and was not far from the royal castle Cadzow Castle . Both came into the possession of the Hamilton clan around 1315 . Under the rule of the 1st Lord Hamilton , the place name Hamilton prevailed. His descendants, the Dukes of Hamilton, resided here at Hamilton Palace until 1919 , which was the largest non-royal residence in Great Britain until it was demolished in 1921.
