Mary Victoria Hamilton

Mary Victoria Douglas Hamilton (born December 11, 1850 in Hamilton Palace , † May 14, 1922 in Budapest ) was Princess of Monaco (1869–1880) by marriage and, also by marriage, Princess (1880) and Countess Festetics of Tolna (1883 ).

Life

Mary Victoria was born as the daughter of William Douglas-Hamilton, 11th Duke of Hamilton (1811-1863), and his wife Princess Marie Amalie of Baden (1817-1888) at Hamilton Palace.

On September 21, 1869, she married Prince Albert of Monaco, who ruled as Prince Albert I from 1889, in the Marchais Castle .

The marriage was not happy, the princess left Monaco a few months after the wedding and lived with her family abroad, mostly in Baden-Baden . There she gave birth to her son Ludwig, who later became Prince Louis II . Her husband didn't meet his son until ten years later. In 1880, nine years before Albert became Prince, the marriage was annulled .

Mary Victoria married on June 2, 1880 in Budapest the Hungarian nobleman Tasziló Festetics de Tolna (1850-1933, Count Festetics 1883). She had four more children with him:

  • Mária (1881-1953)
  • Georg (1882–1941)
  • Alexandra (1884–1963)
  • Karola-Friederika (1888–1951)

Mary Victoria died on February 14, 1922 in Budapest and was buried there. She is the great-great-grandmother of Prince Albert II and, through her second marriage, also the ancestor of the fashion designer Egon von Fürstenberg and the actress Ira von Fürstenberg .
