Princess Amalie of Hessen-Darmstadt

Karl Ludwig (born February 14, 1755 in Karlsruhe , † December 16, 1801 in Arboga , Sweden ) was Hereditary Prince of Baden . Since he died before his father, Karl Friedrich von Baden , he never came to power. By marrying his daughters with crowned heads, he became “Europe's father-in-law”.

Life

Karl Ludwig was the eldest son of Margrave Karl Friedrich von Baden (1728–1811) and Karoline Luise von Hessen-Darmstadt (1723–1783), the daughter of Landgrave Ludwig VIII of Hessen-Darmstadt . Karl Ludwig is described as obese and sickly. Karl Ludwig stood in the shadow of his father all his life. From 1773, however, he took part in the meetings of the Privy Council in Karlsruhe. In 1795 he became General-Feldzeugmeister of the Swabian Empire . After the marriage of his daughter Luise to the Russian heir to the throne Alexander , he was also given the rank of Russian infantry general.

In 1801 Karl Ludwig and Amalie visited their daughter Louise, who was now the Russian tsarina as Elisabeth Alexejewna. On the journey home from Russia he also visited his daughter Friederike , the Queen of Sweden. The return journey to Germany began on December 15 from Gripsholm Castle , with the traveling car sliding and tipping over just before Arboga. Karl Ludwig suffered a stroke. He was taken to Arboga, where he died on December 16 after being unconscious for twelve hours. Buried on January 17, 1802 in the Riddarholmskyrkan in Stockholm . Only his heart was buried in the castle church in Pforzheim .
