Riddarholmskyrkan is a church on the island of Riddarholmen in central Stockholm in Sweden .

history

The complex, which today serves as a royal burial church, belonged to a Franciscan monastery that was built in 1270 under Magnus Ladulås . The church itself was built between 1280 and 1300. The remaining parts of the monastery were demolished in the 17th century. In 1807, the parish belonging to the church dissolved and the building was only used as a funeral and memorial church.

architecture

The three-aisled church is built of red brick in the Gothic style, and the high west tower has a top made of openwork cast iron.

Some grave choirs built later, however, are kept in the Renaissance style. The furnishings mainly consist of grave goods, but there are also medieval frescoes in the base.

Order of the Seraphine

Serafimerringningen and ceremony for Richard von Weizsäcker on February 11, 2015

The Riddarholm Church is the church of the Royal Seraphine Order , the house and highest order of merit of the Kingdom of Sweden.

Until around 1820 all knights who died in Stockholm were buried in Riddarholmskirche. In the church, the coats of arms of the loaned can still be found on the walls. Since the church is not a parish church, the bells are rung only on the day of the burial of every seraphine knight. The serafimer ringing ( Serafimerringningen in Swedish ), which lasts for a full hour from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. , is accompanied by a ceremony in the church. Before that, the coat of arms is carried in a procession from Stockholm Palace to Riddarholm Church.
