Ulrike Eleonore of Denmark (born September 11, 1656 in Copenhagen , † July 26, 1693 in Karlberg Castle near Stockholm) was a Danish-Norwegian princess and by marriage to Charles XI. Queen of Sweden .

Life

Ulrike Eleonore was a daughter of King Friedrich III. von Denmark and his wife Sophie Amalie von Braunschweig-Lüneburg . She was well educated and trained by her ambitious mother. In 1675 she was with the Swedish King Karl XI. engaged. As war broke out between Denmark and Sweden over the Skåne area in the same year , the wedding was postponed. After the peace treaty in 1680 she married and became Queen of Sweden as Ulrika Eleonora. Despite the political reasons for the marriage, the marriage was happy. Ulrika Eleonora had no political influence whatsoever in Sweden, where absolute monarchy was established in the year of her marriage. The queen took care of the poor and the sick. She was also a talented artist.

She fell ill at the age of 36. The doctor Johann Daniel Major tried to save her, but became infected and died too. The remains of Ulrike Eleonore of Denmark are in the royal burial church Riddarholmskyrkan in the Swedish capital Stockholm .

The Admiralty Church in Karlskrona is called Ulrica Pia after her .
