Karlberg Castle is in Solna on the Karlberg Canal . It borders Stockholm's northwestern part of Kungsholmen , is south of the Tomteboda post office and west of the Vasastaden district . The Karlberg Military College is now located in the castle and its park is used by the citizens of Stockholm and Solna for jogging and walks.

In the 1620s Gustav II. Adolf's half-brother, Reichsadmiral Carl Carlsson Gyllenhielm , became the owner of three villages in the Solna parish ( socks ). From this he formed a Freihof with the name Karlberg. In 1634 a stone house was built, which formed the core of today's complex. After his death in 1650 it stood empty until Magnus Gabriel de la Gardie bought it nineteen years later.

De la Gardie expanded the complex into a castle and greatly changed the interior in the splendid state that has been preserved to the present day. When De la Gardie was forced to leave Karlberg due to economic difficulties, Johan Gabriel Stenbock took it over , but in 1688 the castle passed into royal ownership.

The royal family often lived in Karlberg Castle, especially in summer. The wife of Charles XI. , Queen Ulrika Eleonora d. Ä. , opened a children's home with associated weaving mill and her son Karl XII. grew up mostly in the castle. After the great fire of Tre Kronor Castle in 1697 , the entire court moved to Karlberg. From then on, the palace was a royal pleasure palace until 1792, where Gustav III. founded the Royal War Academy there. From then on, officers were trained in Karlberg Castle, making the castle the world's oldest cadet school .

In 1935 the building was placed under state protection as a Byggnadsminne (architectural monument).
