Norrmalm is now considered the business center of Stockholm and is also known as "Stockholm City".

In the 17th century, when Stockholm was growing rapidly, Norrmalm was incorporated and city palaces and town houses were built. After the central train station was opened in 1871 , Norrmalm developed into the new city center with banks, shops and entertainment facilities.

As part of the renovation of Norrmalm (Norrmalmsregelingen) , most of the old houses were demolished from 1952, and a modern shopping and administrative district was created, in which the largest department stores, cultural institutions and the government office are located. The number of inhabitants is therefore quite small and is around 7000. There are two underground stations in the district : T-Centralen and Hötorget .

Interesting buildings and streets in the Norrmalm district are the Kulturhuset , the Konserthuset , the National Museum as well as the Sergels torg , the Kungsträdgården and the Hamngatan . In the south of Norrmalm, on the corner of Strömgatan and Drottninggatan, you will find the sculpture Hemlös räv .

Vasastaden

The district got its name because of the street Vasagatan , which leads directly to it. The street, in turn, is named after a statue of Gustav Vasa , which stood at the beginning in front of the Riddarhuset . In the middle of the 19th century there was a village and various noble estates here. Urban development began around 1880.

The Vasastaden district was formed in 1926, the land area covers 294 hectares, in 2004 51,801 people lived here. In the north, Vasastaden is bordered by Lake Brunnsviken , in the east by Birger Jarlsgatan , in the south by Tegnergatan and in the west by Lake Karlbergssjön on whose banks Karlberg Castle is located, but already in the municipality of Solna .

The dominant streets are the Sveavägen , which runs in a north-south direction and is crossed by the Odengatan . The Stockholm City Library designed by architect Gunnar Asplund is located here . Another main street is the Sankt Eriksgatan , which leads south over the Karlbergssjön to the Kungsholmen district . The Odenplan square with the Gustav Wasa Church and the Vasaparken Park are located in the heart of Vasastaden . There are three underground stations in the district: Odenplan , Rådmansgatan and St. Eriksplan .

Vasastaden's big "landmark" was Astrid Lindgren , who lived for 60 years in Dalagatan with a view of Vasapark. Since 2004 the area of the Vasa Park bordering the Dalagatan has been called Astrid Lindgren's Terrass.

Skeppsholmen

The district consists of the island of the same name and the island of Kastellholmen . It is connected to the Norrmalm district by a bridge. Skeppsholmen became a naval base in 1634 . Striking is a row of houses (Långa Raden) about 200 m long , which was built for Charles XII. Life guard was established. After the military left, the buildings have been used by museums ( modern museum , architecture museum), schools, cultural and historical institutions and a youth hostel since 1968 . Many buildings in the district were created by the architect Fredrik Blom .

The Stiftelsen Skeppsholmsgården Foundation runs the Skeppsholmens folkhögskola (adult education center) on Skeppsholmen .

Kastellholmen

Kastellholmen is the southern neighboring island of Skeppsholmen and is connected to it by a bridge, the area is approx. 3.1 hectares. On the island there are some residential and storage buildings as well as the fort by architect Fredrik Blom from 1848, which replaced an earlier, burned down fort. The island was called Notholmen and Skansholmen , and since 1720 it has been called Kastellholmen. Because of its strategic location at the entrance to Stockholm, the Swedish navy had been stationed here since 1665.
