Kulturhuset (Stockholm)
The Kulturhuset , a cultural center in the district of Norrmalm in Stockholm .
The decision to create a cultural center in central Stockholm was taken in the course of urban renewal during the 1950s and 1960s. The new building was intended to counter the commercial use of downtown Stockholm. In 1965 the city administration started an architecture competition, which the architect Peter Celsing won with his proposal.
This was preceded by the construction of the Moderna Museet , which contributed part of the project to create cultural space in Stockholm. A working group with Pontus Hultén now planned to promote an expanded concept of art with the Kulturhuset, which shows everyday culture and the possibilities of handicraft and industry ("Gatans stämning och Verkstadens möjligheter").
During the renovation of the Reichstag building in Stockholm, the Swedish parliament met provisionally in the Kulturhuset. In the adjoining hotel, the officials' offices were set up until the renovations were completed in 1983.
