T-Centralen is the heart of the Stockholm metro network . The T at the beginning of the station name stands for tunnelbana ( Swedish for subway ). All lines of the Stockholm subway system meet at the T-Centralen station. This fact as well as the location in the city center and the proximity to the main train station (“ Centralstation ”) make the station the most frequented in the Swedish capital . It is located in the Norrmalm district , between Sergels torg and Vasagatan .
On a normal winter working day, 265,100 commuters get on here. An underground passage leads from here to Stockholm Central Station with regional and long-distance traffic connections, as well as to the central bus station "Cityterminalen". The passage makes it easier for long-distance travelers to get to the subway.
Until January 27, 1958, the name of the station was "Centralen". However, since it was often confused with the main train station, the name was changed.
First stop: Green Line (Lines 17-19) and Red Line (Lines 13 and 14)
The station opened on November 24, 1957 as the 38th station in the Stockholm metro network. The Green Line (L 17-19) from Gamla stan (old town) and Hötorget , as well as the Red Line (L 13-14) between Gamla Stan and Östermalmstorg pass this part of the T-Centralen station . The station is located just below the Klara kyrka (Klarakirche) and the Åhléns department store .
The station has two platforms on different levels. The upper level is 8.5 meters underground and is used by the northbound trains of the Green Line (towards Hässelby strand, Alvik and Åkeshov) and the southbound trains of the Red Line (towards Fruängen and Norsborg). The lower platform is 14 meters deep and is served by the southbound trains of the Green Line (towards Fårsta Strand, Hagsätra and Skarpnäck) and the northbound trains of the Red Line (towards Mörby Centrum and Ropsten).
Entrances
This part of the station has two entrances. The southern one is to the southwest and two doors towards Vasagatan 20, Klara Västra Kyrkogatan 20 and the underground passage to Stockholm Central Station, which opened on December 1, 1958. The second entrance is to the northeast and has doors to Drottninggatan , Sergels torg 16 and Klarabergsgatan 48.
Second stop: Blue Line (Lines 10 and 11)
The second part of T-Centralen opened on August 31, 1975 as the 79th station in the Stockholm subway network. The blue line runs from here both in the direction of Kungsträdgården (east) and in the direction of Akalla and Hjulsta (north-west). The station is right under the Åhléns department store and the main post office "Centralposten". It is about 30 meters deep and has a platform.
Entrances
The station has two entrances. The first has two doors to Vasagatan 9 (about 150 meters north of the main train station at Vasagatan) and opposite to Vasagatan 36. The northern exit connects to the other part of the station and leads to Sergels torg. To get to the Blue Line from here, you have to use the elevators.
Artistic arrangement
Several artists were involved in the design of the T-Centralen subway station.
Exit Vasagatan
The walls are decorated with a decoration that the artist Jörgen Fågelqvist called "Tur och retur" ("There and back"). The decor dates from 1957 and was supplemented in 1962 and 1995.
